The final release has exceeded our expectations. It is a visual masterpiece when running on a PS4 Pro, and is even one of the best-looking games for PS4 on the standard console. Its depth and playtime of more than 40 hours also puts it up there with some of the greats, while the combat system never gets tired.

Horizon maakt in werkelijk ieder facet indruk.

The Telegraph (Mar 03, 2017)
Aside from the occasional bit of weak voice acting and some bad lip sinc, there’s not a lot to complain about with Horizon. Side quests can be rather simple, often asking you to track someone or something, or sending you to gather items, kill, or get somewhere. Similarly, the moment-to-moment dialogue doesn’t do much to motivate you, but the action itself is good enough to carry it and the overarching story is dripping in mystery which, crucially, pays off. On the surface, Horizon seems like a jumble of influences but, just like the murderous machina wandering its lands, the game is far more than its component parts, delivering a gripping story, satisfying combat, and the most gorgeous video game environments I’ve ever seen. Horizon confidently carves out an identity of its own in an overpopulated genre.

The story and the stunningly rendered world in which it takes place is what will pull most players in at the start. But what might eventually prove even more gratifying for some players is the action. Aloy's battles are fast and furious, forcing players both to strategize and rely on their reflexes. Some battles are nothing short of exhilarating. If it has a flaw, it could simply be that it borrows a little too much in terms of play concepts and mechanics -- outpost raids, crafting, dialogue design, and more -- from its open-world contemporaries. But the sheer imagination and scope of the rest of the game is so impressive that a few pilfered ideas shouldn't be too hard for most players to overlook. Make no mistake, Horizon Zero Dawn is among the best and most impressive new entries in the relatively sparse genre of lush, large-scale, single-player role-playing games.

Horizon Zero Dawn is Guerrilla Games’ crowning achievement in video game development. A masterful epic that outshines any game we’ve seen on the PlayStation 4 so far. Words can not do justice for what you need to see for yourself. If Sony was banking on Horizon Zero Dawn to be its next flagship franchise they’ve succeeded and Aloy will do a fine job stepping into the large shoes that Nathan Drake so recently left empty.

Horizon: Zero Dawn is just brilliant. I speak as a critic who has played more “open sandbox” games than any one human should and has grown so very weary of them. I should have gotten sick of this thing in an hour, but I’ve been glued to it for days and days and I don’t want it to end. I love existing in this world – a world of desperate survival but of growing culture and a sense of hope. A world of giant metal animals that promise some breathtaking fights.

IGN (Feb 20, 2017)
Across a vast and beautiful open world, Horizon Zero Dawn juggles many moving parts with polish and finesse. Its main activity - combat - is extremely satisfying thanks to the varied design and behaviors of machine-creatures that roam its lands, each of which needs to be taken down with careful consideration. Though side questing could have been more imaginative, its missions are compelling thanks to a central mystery that led me down a deep rabbit hole to a genuinely surprising - and moving - conclusion.

Horizon lived up to the hype. It’s beautiful, it’s engaging and it’s packed with tons of content. I’m sorry I’ve ever doubted you, Guerilla Games, this one’s a must for PS4 owners.

I took approximately thirty-five hours to complete Horizon Zero Dawn’s main story, but the first thing I did after I finished was dive right back in. There were still exciting quests to do, gorgeous places to discover, and fascinating characters to meet. I’m still falling in love with this world and all the magnificent things it has to offer. Guerrilla Games has created something truly impressive and memorable with their first dive into the genre, and I have only endless excitement for all that’s in store for the future of this universe.

Reboot (Mar, 2017)

Horizon Zero Dawn is another top-tier exclusive for the PS4. As long as you have some patience in combat, and 30-40 hours to drop to fully explore the world and take in the plot, you’ll leave the game with an immensely satisfying experience.

Like a real ecosystem, Horizon: Zero Dawn is brilliantly balanced. Aloy feels like an inextricable part of it, halfway between prey and predator. Whether you’re climbing cliff-faces with a weightless, fluid joy, hunting, or travelling through the landscape, Horizon: Zero Dawn takes you on a tour of discovery. An endless sense of wonder and awe push you onward no matter what you’re doing. The more time I spend in Horizon: Zero Dawn’s world, the less I want to leave. An open-world that tailors to each and every interest, Horizon: Zero Dawn keeps combat fresh, with an intriguing protagonist to match.

This is the first departure from the Killzone series for developer Guerrilla Games, and though you might think the team took a risk by stepping out of its FPS comfort zone to create a third-person open-world action game, you'd never know it was their first rodeo. For every minor imperfection, there's an element of greatness that recharges your desire to keep fighting and exploring Zero Dawn's beautiful and perilous world. Guerrilla Games has delivered one of the best open-world games of this generation, and redefined its team's reputation in the process.

I didn’t expect Horizon Zero Dawn to be this good. I doubt I’ll be the only one saying they were surprised that the Killzone developer has been able to deliver a game with such breadth, depth and consistently rewarding gameplay. Couple all of that with a compelling story led by an engaging lead protagonist and you have a brilliant game, an absolute must-buy for all PS4 owners. Those with a PS4 Pro and an HDR TV will find an even more beautiful experience on offer, but everybody who plays Horizon: Zero Dawn is in for an absolute treat.

On the surface, Horizon Zero Dawn borrows from a litany of other games and it’s easy to jump to the conclusion that it’s merely unoriginal and derivative. However, these well-worn gameplay tropes have been streamlined and polished to a near-perfect sheen. With its excellent combat system that is extremely fun to play, and its breathtaking world that begs you to explore it, Horizon Zero Dawn easily overcomes its few flaws and delivers a must-play game that, even this early into 2017, is a dead cert to be one of the best games of the year – perhaps even of the generation.

Glückwunsch an Guerrilla Games!

Games TM (2017)
The story is so wrapped up in mystery and discovery that we don’t want to get into any details in this review. Suffice to say that while it can feel a little derivative in places (a shortcoming that could be levelled at several areas of the game, but is somewhat expected), it is driven by a compelling world that gradually reveals itself. Discovering how civilisation was lost and how the machines rose are weaved nicely into Aloy’s search for her own hidden origin and journey. What’s more, the main story campaign is supplemented by some meaty side quests that can often be as involved and varied as the main narrative. While Horizon Zero Dawn sometimes shows its team’s relative inexperience in places, the overall construction, the combat and the characters elevate it into the upper echelons of the genre. It might not be Witcher III level of excellence, but for a first attempt from Guerrilla, it’s impressively close.

The Guardian (Feb 20, 2017)
An immensely playable – and likeable – romp with a core combat mechanic worth the price of purchase alone. And given a Marvel-style post-credits sequence suggests a sequel is very much in the works, Guerrilla will be given another shot at genuine greatness. Provided, of course, a real-world apocalypse doesn’t Trump their imagined one in the meantime.

Gamekult (Feb 28, 2017)

A decent open-world game with a bad story and a disappointing world is still a decent open-world game. To be played after you've finished the greats.

Digitiser 2000 (Mar 13, 2017)
For now though... there's no doubt that Horizon Zero Dawn works. For all its unoriginality, despite its dreadful scripting and acting, it's still an astonishingly polished, gorgeous, and massive experience.

Can't Stop the Movies (Jun 04, 2017)
Good ideas, but not enough to overcome the mess of Aloy and the world's relationship to her. The climax disposes of the good stuff in a three-part boss fight where two-thirds are summed up by "Bomb Repeat Bomb", and a simplistic tower defense skirmish that erases the goodwill of not having to keep a trigger pressed in the investigative parts of HZD. The dialogue does have one interesting thing to say during this climax as Aloy wonders aloud what good it is to talk to ghosts. Considering her thin writing, she might as well be talking about herself.
