Until Dawn is everything that Quantic Dream games have tried to be – unsuccessfully – for the past decade. It emulates horror movies while demonstrating a clear understanding of what makes those movies work, its focus on consequence is nervewracking and intricate, and its story is silly but strongly delivered. It’s the best David Cage game not made by David Cage, and it’s the best interactive horror flick you’ll play.

When all is said and done, Until Dawn is not just full of surprises and shocks, but it itself is a bit of a surprise. After watching trailers for the game it's all too easy to judge, but it's not until you actually lay hands on Supermassive's creation and let yourself get drawn into the world that you actually appreciate how bloody scary it is, and most importantly - fun. But scary. But fun.

Until Dawn isn’t a horror game; rather, it’s a dread simulator: every time a character ends up alone, every time you have a run-in with a character that pops up in-between chapters, every time you see anything weird… you heart rate ups that little bit more. Until Dawn plays with you. It’s an extended metaphor for horror games, one that prides itself on how much it predicts – and counteracts – what you’re doing. If you care about the advancement of meta-narratives and the player/game relationship, this is for you.

If you are a horror fanatic and more of a cinematic gamer I highly recommend Until Dawn to you. It took me about 10 hours to complete and I am on my second play through now. Even if your significant other doesn’t really play games but loves horror movies let them try this and with the simple controls and great storytelling they will be hooked.

While of course many decisions will be made during these game hours Until Dawn also has a focus on exploration which not only builds the story but also uncovers helpful clues that may yield fruit further into the storyline. Quick time events are also scattered throughout the Until Dawn adventure.

Until Dawn knows exactly what it is, and doesn't pretend to be anything more. In that process it allows for some predictable plotlines, hammy acting, and lack of meaningful choices, but I'm glad that it exists, and every horror fan owes it to themselves to play it at some point -- especially at a price cut.

So, how does Until Dawn measure up? For the first playthrough, the game is engrossing and addicting. However, once the curtain rises on the game’s tricks, you’ll find an interactive drama that offers far less than it first appears. The multiple endings are overstated, characters can’t die as often as you’d hope, the save system is flawed, some of the gameplay elements are downright bad, and the story has plenty of issues. However, the game is definitely worth that first playthrough. The production values are stellar, and the mystery at the heart of the game is interesting from start to finish. Consider this game a fantastic option for rental, or something to look for on sale down the road.
