Army Men 3D was a good game overall. The gameplay was challenging and fun and required some thought, which can not be said about a lot of games. The graphics were pretty good and made everything look good, but the sounds were rather average. The large amount of things to shoot and drive really added to the game, and the premise behind the game was good too. This is a good game most people will enjoy.
Overall I enjoyed Army Men 3D. The stealth may not be in the same mould as MGS or Syphon Filter but it does offer an entertaining challenge. The graphics and sound effects are very good but the gameplay suffers from a few annoyances such as the vehicle control. I often left the vehicle in a ditch and marched the entire level on foot, which kind of made a mockery of the objective.

Army Men tries to be all that it can be, but ultimately the game will appeal only to military sadists who have tons of patience and a real bloodthirst for killing the enemy. Sounds like a job for Major Mike.

In the end, I loved Army Men, but only for a short while. The only long-term saving grace is its two-player mode. I zipped through the game in a weekend. It's a decent game to play for about two days, and then that's about it.
Mega Fun (Apr, 1999)

I feel that this is one of those cases where one should not judge a book by its cover. There is so much good stuff hiding under those sketchy graphics and awkward movements. But graphics and control are also key to a good game. So despite the fact that there is no other game like Army Men 3D out there, in the end I can't give it a strong recommendation.
The Video Game Critic (Sep 14, 2000)
The battlefields try to recreate WWII settings, but the graphics are pixilated and fairly sloppy. You can either embark on a series of solo missions, or face-off against a second player on a split-screen. The two-player mode isn't so hot, but the one-player missions are well-designed and worth the price of admission.

Army Men 3D is a three-dimensional war game wherein you act as a commando-like soldier in a world gone completely Saving Private Ryan, plastic, and lilliputian. It's a world with some narrative behind it, so a history lesson is necessary before we proceed. After shifting solely to software development awhile back, 3DO introduced a lighthearted real-time strategy game to the PC revolving around little plastic army men named... Army Men, and since it sold well, the company developed the concept into a franchise. To date, another PC strategy game as well as this one (a third-person shooter) has been released, while a third-person N64 adventure game (Army Men: Sarge's Heroes) and a PlayStation helicopter game (Army Men: Air Attack) have been announced.
