The sad fact is that, although conceptually the game should provide at least a modicum of entertainment: hovering in the air (which looks daft after you’ve stopped moving), punching, kicking, exchanging projectile weapons and the token ‘super’ moves), somehow all these promising elements fail to gel into an exciting battle. To be fair, some of the ‘beam’ attacks are pretty good fun, especially when you both let one loose simultaneously; resulting in a projectile collision. The usual Versus, Tournament, Fighting and Training rules apply in the options screen, including a Special Tournament, where up to eight players can compete, but not on screen at the same time. It’s the culmination of atrocious gameplay and a lack of variety in the character moves which puts you off initially, but the most thunderously angerinducing aspect of every fight is the way the game annoyingly pauses whenever a special energy blast is activated, supposedly to give the other player a chance to counter.

Dragon Ball is a popular Japanese anime series currently making headway in the US. The series' content makes for a perfect fighting game: lots of flying guys, all of whom have the ability to shoot fireballs. Several Dragon Ball fighting games are already on the Super Famicom, Mega Drive, and PlayStation, none of which have seen the light of day here. Dragon Ball Final Bout is out in Japan, and it's likely that it will be the first DB game to be released stateside. While Dragon Ball Final Bout is probably among the best DB games around, that still doesn't make it a good game - and it is not a good game.
My theory is that Bandai is praying gamers will throw out their bucks for the Dragonball name - and they are. Look at our news story about the top ten games in Japan. This pile of garbage is #1. I wouldn't reccomend Dragon Ball Final Bout to any game player, and most certainly not to any Dragonball fan. You will be sorely disappointed. Don't waste your money or time on this one. Don't even try it out.

If you're a Dragon Ball Z fan, then you may like this game, simply because it stars all your favorite Dragon Ball characters. But to be honest, you might as well go out and buy all the toys -- at least they're more controllable.

If I have a flaw, it’s the tendency to fall dramatically in love with frenetic, brightly coloured and loud Japanese cartoons. My flat is littered with the relics of 18 years of Mangaphilia, from the original Akira comics through to Hello Kitty and Pokemon. My most expensive discovery yet was Dragon Ball Z, a show that started airing regularly on the UK Cartoon Network about a year ago. After experiencing one of their all-day marathon showings (the entire Cell games saga) I made it my goal to find out all about this cool series and start buying up all and any stuff I could find related to it.
