Everyone who's ever entered an arcade and plunked in a quarter or token (or if you're just new to this era...slid a rechargable game card.) has played a shooter of some type at some point in their life. In the 80s it looked as if they were never going to go away. Classics like Gradius, 1942, Zaxxon, and Time Pilot all broke through in this time period, and the public couldn't get enough of them.
Einhander doesn't destroy everything else in its genre, as everyone loves to say, but it is definitely a welcome addition to any shooter fan's collection. Like most Square games, Einhander just seems to shine with perfection and professionalism, even if it doesn't break any boundaries. I don't just reccomend Einhander to shooter fans, I reccomend it to everyone - but for the shooter fans, Einhander is a must-buy.

The moveable arm adds a refreshing bit of strategy to a genre based on twitchy response for success. Add to that multiple branches, hidden bonuses, a moody trance music soundtrack, and a pretty steep learning curve and you have the next generation of the shooter. There is still room to grow for Einhander 2 if Square decides to go that route, though-and we certainly hope it does.

While it may not re-invent the genre, it sets a new standard. It's one of the few games that will make you turn your head in disbelief. It's just looks too good to be a PS One game. Add in the ridiculously good soundtrack, impressive weapon selection, ideal challenge level, and enough replay value to more than justify a purchase, you'll have one of the greatest games ever designed for the console.

Side-scrolling shooters have been at the top of gamers' playlists since the release of great games such as Gaires, Thunder Force, and even Defender. But since the launch of the PlayStation, shooters sort of died off and fighting games stole the spotlight. In attempt to rekindle the flame, Square took a break from developing RPGs and focused its energy into a shooting game named Einhander. Not only did Square 'rekindle' the side-scrolling genre with Einhander, but it has literally surpassed and set the standard - it's one of the best shooters I have ever played.
Ultra Game Players (1998)
It's been a long time since horizontally scrolling shoot 'em ups were popular, but with its thumping soundtrack, top-notch graphics, scrumptious explosions and highly enjoyable gameplay, Einhander single-handedly proves that this genre is ripe for a 32-bit revival. It's just fun flying along, picking up the array of impressive weapons and using them to kick the cack of the hordes of enemy craft. The only bummer is that if you're an experienced shoot 'em up addict, this won't pose too much of a challenge. Hopefully the company that picks it up here will up the default difficulty setting. If they do that, this'll be a killer game.
Wow - Nicht schlecht was uns Squaresoft hier präsentiert, zumal es sich um ihr erstes Shoot ´em Up handelt und die Spieleschmiede in erster Linie für RPG´s bekannt ist. Ok, das Leveldesign ist an ein paar kleinen Stellen verbesserungswürdig aber Spaß macht der Shooter allemal, zumal der Replay-Value ungemein hoch ist und der Titel verdammt gut aussieht. Einhänder ist eines der Games, die man als PS-User unbedingt haben muss - Klare Kaufempfehlung. Neben der getesteten Japan Fassung ist noch eine US Version erhältlich.

With a superb soundtrack, sharp graphics and excellent gameplay, Einhander still has a few black marks on its record. In being so detailed, the game loses out in balance for more veteran shooters for being a little too easy, but this is easily alleviated by switching difficulty levels. Also, with a slight 3D tinge to gameplay, it can get a little confusing as to what object is in shooting range and what isn't, these factor only slightly into the overall excellence of Einhander. Shooter fans do not want to miss out.

With all of the hardcore (and sometimes unreasonable) difficulty that many expect, Einhänder continues to deliver today, and even stacks up pretty well against modern powerhouses like R-Type Final and Ikaruga.

There's no denying that the space shooter isn't what it used to be. The once-thriving genre, championed by such classics as Gradius and Raiden, has boiled down to more of a nostalgic pastime. People just aren't as jazzed about blowing away hordes of alien space ships and racking up billions of points like before. While the occasional shooter still shows up every now and then, it seems like it'd take a miracle for a company to produce one that would rejuvenate the genre and renew public interest. Leave it to Squaresoft to accept the challenge. And while the fruit of its efforts may not be the miracle this genre needs for a complete revival, it's just about as good as shooters get.

Futuristische Hintergründe. die mit hoher Geschwindigkeit am Spieler vorbeisausen, und teilweise spektakuläre Kamerafahrten sorgen für eine gelungene Optik. Auch die Idee mit dem flexiblen Geschützturm verdient Anerkennung, obwohl mir eigentlich verschiedene feste Waffen, die individuell ausbaubar sind, besser gefallen. Ansonsten erinnert Einhänder stark an Philosoma, dem schon recht alten, dennoch bemerkenswerten PS-Shooter. Wem dieser Titel gefallen hat, der kann auch bei Einhänder zuschlagen, sollte jedoch nicht mit zu viel Innovation rechnen. Eigenartig finde ich allerdings die Möglichkeit das Game im Free-Modus, der unendlich viele Continues bietet, durchzuspielen, was ich auch getan habe. Danach nämlich verliert Einhänder verständlicherweise erheblich an Reiz, was zu diesem Preis nicht akzeptabel ist

"...and because of its shape, called… Einhander." That inspired line from this game’s introduction could be changed to read, ''and because of its hype, it came from… Square.'' Einhander might be the single most hyped 2D shooter in ‘modern times’. While it is a very good game, the real reason for the hype is obvious: Square made it.

Einhander is fun, but you must always begin on stage one, and reaching the later stages is difficult and time-consuming. Also, since your ship is large and the bosses are huge, there's rarely enough room on the screen to maneuver around. It might not be a classic, but many fans of the shooting genre consider this an old favorite.
