There are only two real problems with Klonoa: It may be a bit too cute for its own good, and it's a little short (it'll probably only take you a few days to complete). Still, the game is so good, these problems are easily overlooked - it's simply one of the best side-scrollers in years.

Klonoa is a fantastic game and one of the PlayStation’s best titles. The game has held up wonderfully all these years later and is a treat for any one that even slightly likes platformers. Klonoa did not garner the attention it deserved at release but don’t let that deter you from playing one of the best PlayStation games of all time.

Klonoa is a top-notch production throughout, exemplifying everything we've come to know and love about the platform genre. And while the game may not shatter the platformer mold, it offers enough in the way of brilliant design and superb gameplay that you could care less.

If you are a kid, have kids or want to act like a kid for a while, this game is perfect. For more seasoned gamers, Klonoa will come to an end too quickly, but this is perfect for the kids. The game breaks away from traditional platform games in some areas and follows the traditional formula in others, making the game feel comfortable. The linear 3D environments and awesome graphics keep you on track throughout the game, and you rarely ever feel lost. All in all, I would say to give this game a shot.

Klonoa: Door to Phantomile’s lighthearted but sometimes serious adventure in a land of dreams is an excellent platforming journey with a deceptively simple mechanic at its center. The ability to pick up enemies to use as projectiles or as jump assistance has a surprising amount of flexibility, the game happy to provide the enemies that allow you to tackle any challenge put before you while still making enemies a decent threat because you must get in close or overcome their defenses to snag them. You don’t ignore your foes since they’re what you need to throw, and this leads to a game that leads to constant consideration of the area before you as you must use one dangerous threat to overcome another, the simplicity of control keeping things clean and fun rather than frustrating or difficult.

Namco have produced a great stress free game here and the inclusion of hidden features and timed bonus stages that will only be unlocked after the game has been completed, helps to enhance the longevity of the game. Those you who completed the sequels of Tomb Raider and Resident Evil within a few hours will no doubt argue that this game offers little or no challenge, however for the rest of us mere mortals it offers a several days of enjoyable gaming.

IGN (Mar 11, 1998)
Klonoa succeeds as a good all around platformer and not just a good two and a half dimension game. Each stage is straightforward, as it should be, but likewise, there're enough secrets to keep the expert gamer enthralled. It's overly cute in some ways, but even that's flawless. If there's anything to gripe about, it's that it doesn't have enough levels, and the bosses are difficult to kill, to say the least. In the platformer genre, though, this is arguably the best one on the market. Don't let this one pass you by.

(...) Abwechslung wird Namco-like ganz gro geschrieben in Klonoa.

Well, that's about it. Experienced games should rent this puppy before investing the money; but it's definitely worth a try. If you're a parent, this should keep your kid out of your face for a long time, although it may be too difficult for very young children. Remember to keep your trigger finger on the mute button!
