Video Games (Apr, 1999)

Role playing games aimed at a younger age group are not about to become the next biggest hit on the PSX, but this is something that the developers know all too well. That's not to say that Monkey Hero isn't a successful title in its own right. In terms of the level this game is aimed at, this title is actually a big success. Put to the test by my ten year old cousin this game actually scored quite well. In short this game can be recommended to younger gamers or those starting out in the world of RPGs, but for the dedicated RPG fans out there, wait till Final Fantasy VIII hits the shelves.

If the graphics had been more polished and the game engine smoother, Monkey Hero would stand well above the current crop of RPGs. Most of the essential ingredients are there: real-time fighting, spells and weapons a go-go, succinct conversations with cute little pixie people and a genuine feeling of progress and achievement. If only, eh? Nevermind…

While it's not a bad thing to pattern a game after established classics of the genre, there is a problem when the originals are more fun to play. And that's the case with Monkey Hero, a watered-down imitation of Nintendo's Zelda series that relies on nostalgia to attract gamers rather than intriguing twists on gameplay or exciting graphics.

However it happened, Blam!'s pure intentions went chaotically awry, resulting in one of the worst PlayStation games in recent memory.

Have you been itching to play with your monkey all of these years? Despite contrary belief, playing with your monkey isn't as much fun as your older brother might suggest. Point in case? Monkey Hero: Take 2 and BLAM!'s latest title, a game that has unfortunately poked its way into the PlayStation mainstream.
