The tension can reach unbearable proportions, making it difficult to play the game alone or with the lights out. There are plenty of "find the key" puzzles, but they tend to be more thought-provoking than frustrating. I found myself slowly drawn into the game even as I became more and more anxious. Silent Hill is a legitimate classic, and perhaps the most terrifying video game ever made.

If you can look past the elderly graphics and wallow in the suffocating loneliness of fogbound Silent Hill and the putrescent glory of Nightmare Silent Hill you might understand why this game that slipped out in 1999 with little fanfare has gone on to spawn four sequels and one prequel across a variety of gaming platforms. Good though some of those are, not one has quite matched for sheer, lurching dread that first time you descend into the school square, see the darkness and the occult symbol and hear the chink of rusted metal under your feet as you find the school and the game have suddenly and horribly… changed.

Silent Hill paraît jouer dans la même cour que Resident Evil mais en y regardant de plus près, il se différencie beaucoup par sa 3D intégrale. Un aspect qui comble les lacunes de RE tout en apportant de nouvelles options. Bref, c'est vraiment un très bon jeu car il prend le meilleur de Resident Evil tout en rectifiant ses défauts. Con Silent Hill, Konami no llama a la puerta del terror en PSOne, sino que directamente la rompe en mil pedazos. Se trata del primer juego que apuesta por el terror puro y orienta todos sus esfuerzos a producir inquietud y angustia en el jugador. Técnicamente notable, las sensaciones producidas por su magnífica ambientación detallista le convierten en el gran referente de los survival horror puros. Su pueblo, su argumento y algún inolvidable personaje hacen pasar grandes momentos de diversión.

If you are just into video games and don’t like to be scared… well, it’s a great and groundbreaking game, so just play it during the day with the lights on and someone sitting next to you.

Is Silent Hill the best horror adventure game I have ever played? No. But it is the best I have ever played on the Playstation. Now lest you dismiss this lightly, consider this: how many thousands of teenagers and young adults who have never played a point-and-click game will enjoy their first experience? And they won't have been dragged kicking and screaming into the genre but will actually beg for more, and Sony and Konami will be more than happy to oblige. This is why there will be a resurgence of the adventure genre, and it will come from the most unlikely source. I think we have the beginning of a great relationship here, Louie.

Silent Hill is still a fantastic survival horror experience even today. It uses its limitations to create an experience unlike anything at the time and is still terrifying today. If not for Resident Evil 2 this would be the defining survival horror experience of that era.

At the time, there was a lot of comparing between Silent Hill and Resident Evil. The franchises have definitely gone down different paths since, but even here, the tone and style of Silent is refreshingly different. While Resident Evil seemed to enjoy its camp, Silent Hill is purely about clawing around in your head, which its perception-warping gameplay does with aplomb. Even after finishing, I couldn’t say for certain what Harry actually experienced versus what he imagined, and that’s a refreshing place for a horror series to go.
En conclusión, Silent Hill es el juego más terrorífico que se realizó en su momento, y pese a imitar un poco el planteamiento de Resident Evil, se ha convertido en una clásico del género, en una joya a la que todos los programadores de survival horror acuden para tomar ideas, sobretodo para elaborar unos escenarios y crear una atmósfera de terror tan bien conseguida como en el juego de Konami. Es corto, sí. ¿Pero acaso Metal Gear Solid no lo es?
Silent Hill is a winner, no question. The various flaws (like horrible voice acting, odd attack control, and hyper-linear gameplay) keep it from earning a perfect rating. But it’s a worthy successor to Resident Evil and is an excellent example of how games can engage players on a basic, primal level. Don’t miss this one, and don’t bother playing with the lights on. It won’t help.
There's no happy ending in the world of Silent Hill, not really. It's an experience tailor made to crawl behind your eyeballs and scream into your skull, and that can never truly end well for anyone. Still, I'm not going to pretend the years have been kind, I'm not going to lecture you on the worth of the narrative outweighing the cons a decade of advancements have brought. I feel for you, prospective gamer, I honestly do, if you never managed to play the game while these faults were obsolete.

Silent Hill genera angoscia per tutto questo e perché fa leva sulle fobie e sugli stati d’animo che caratterizzano l’animo degli uomini, fin dagli albori, quali smarrimento, solitudine, terrore dell’ignoto e non ultima, la paura più antica e atavica di sempre ma non per questo meno spaventosa: quella del buio. E in Silent Hill ce n’è tanto.

Opting for a much more cerebral approach to the horror genre, Silent Hill prefers to patiently build up tension and suspense by teasing the gamer's imagination with grotesque images and genuinely creepy effects. With Resident Evil still lurking in the backs of some gamers' minds, Silent Hill may not be the right choice for those looking to blast their way through a zombie-filled town with a super grenade-launcher. But for any gamer searching out a solid, innovative title that succeeds in telling a wonderfully crafted story that appeals to the darker stuff of nightmares, Silent Hill cannot be beat. Go out and buy this game now.

Ohne jeden Zweifel, um es gleich vorwegzunehmen, ist es Konami mit Silent Hill gelungen, einen sehr guten, atmosphärisch starken Titel auf die Resident-Evil-Flaggschiffe abzufeuern. Doch es gelingt leider nicht, die Qualität von Capcom zu übertreffen. Die Gründe dafür liegen vor allem in dem etwas zu geradlinigen Spielablauf. Der nächste Schritt ist fast immerzu offensichtlich, so dass trotz all der sehr guten Elemente etwa in der Mitte des Ablaufs ein kleiner Bruch entsteht. Die Kontrolle über Harry während der Actioneinlagen ist zwar mit Bezug auf seine Fähigkeiten als Antiheld perfekt umgesetzt, doch wäre es zum Beispiel wünschenswert gewesen, dass er bei zugefügten Treffern nicht die bereits angelegte Waffe neu erheben muss. Dies wären neben der etwas unglücklichen Sprachausgabe die einzigen wahren Kritikpunkte. Ohne missverstanden werden zu wollen, Silent Hill ist ein Top-Game, aber um den König zu schlagen, muss man noch ein wenig zulegen.

Osoby, które cierpliwie przebrnęły przez wszystkie akapity, wyprowadzą zapewne konkluzję, iż jestem ogromnym fanem omawianej pozycji i mógłbym bezdyskusyjnie polecić wyprawę do Silent Hill. Zdecydowaną rekomendację ogranicza niestety fakt, iż pierwsze doświadczenie z produkcją Team Silent z dzisiejszej perspektywy może być trudne, wręcz odrzucić – głównie ze względu na problematyczne sterowanie i grafikę. Nie mniej dzieło Team Silent wykazuje niesamowite atrybuty wywołania i podtrzymania strachu u odbiorcy, zaś w wyniku podjętych fabularnie decyzji ujrzymy cztery zakończenia (plus jedno o charakterze ciekawostki). Wspaniałym doświadczeniem na koniec dnia okazują się również dyskusje konfrontujące różne interpretacje wydarzeń w grze. Nie zachęcam jednak do wypróbowania Silent Hill na siłę – to nie jest czysta i niekrępująca rozrywka, lecz bardziej teatr przeżyć i emocji, do którego warto odpowiednio podejść.

Smeared muddy textures, fog that only lets you see a few feet ahead, and blocky character designs could kill the experience in many games, but Silent Hill uses these all to surprising effect to amplify its atmospheric horror. The unusual designs of the creatures are amplified to a sickening level due to it being difficult to distinguish their features, the environments feel off-putting and unclean due to their ugly appearance, and the fog lends a strange mystery to the town and whatever strange horrors might be lurking just out of sight. By giving the player the means to defend themselves well enough while making each creature still dangerous and not always worth fighting, Silent Hill genuinely makes the player afraid of its world and able to feel vulnerable even when wielding well-fed firearms.

Exploring through Silent Hill is simple, yet difficult. While Harry has a map that's constantly updated when finding new areas (such as marking when a street is missing road and you can't cross, or what rooms in the school or hospital or whatever are locked if you find the proper map), it takes a bit of effort to navigate the fully 3D world. Most of the progression is solved through puzzles; many are cryptic and creepy, and usually always written to you in blood. There were numerous times when I got stumped on one of the strange puzzles, but once the hints are properly gathered, it's not too challenging - enough to keep your mind busy, though. It makes no difference whether or not you're in either Silent Hill incarnation, the puzzles are necessary to solve to advance.

Silent Hill may not be the fastest-paced game in the world, but it is sure an addicting one. You will find yourself getting sucked into solving the mystery of your missing daughter as well as the mystery of the town. The developers should be commended on their great use of music to enhance the game. Aside from the grainy graphics, imprecise controls and somewhat strange puzzles, this game is pure horror fun.

Silent Hill is definitely the scariest monster in town until we see what Resident Evil 3 for the Dreamcast looks like. It also brings video game horror into the 3rd dimension. Add to that a more intelligent, more disturbing plot than its B-movie predecessors, and this is definitely not a game for little kids. So if you don't fall into that category, go buy Silent Hill, pour yourself a strong drink, turn out all the lights, and immerse yourself in the sickness. It's a hell of a lot better than going to see the latest Wes Craven movie.

Zwar ist sowohl die Story als auch die Atmosphäre sehr gut gelungen und kann wirklich als Leckerbissen für jeden Horror-Fan bezeichnet werden, einige spielerische Mängel trübten leider den Gesamteindruck. So ist es nicht besonders aufregend, in der ersten Stunde des Spiels nur von Punkt A nach Punkt B zu rennen, ohne irgendeine Möglichkeit zu haben, die Stadt selbst zu erforschen. Das legt sich zwar ab der Schule ein wenig, doch auch dann wird man den Eindruck nicht los, daß das Spiel durch das Verteilen der Objekte quer durch die Stadt künstlich in die Länge gezogen wurde. Trotzdem sollte man Silent Hill nicht unterbewerten. Es handelt sich um ein tolles Horror-Spiel, das jeden Genre-Fan in seinen Bann ziehen wird. Bliebe nicht das Gefühl zurück, man hätte mehr daraus machen können, wäre Silent Hill ein absoluter Top-Hit. So bleibt die Referenz in der Grusel-Abteilung nach wie vor beim Hause Capcom.

In the end, though, Konami's first entry in the horror genre - while not quite up to the mark of Capcom's Resident Evil 2 - is a great beginning. Let's hope we've seen the start of a new franchise by the company, because this would be an excellent starting point.
All in all, it can be said that Silent Hill is a solid effort with some faults. Those looking for the intense action of RE may be disappointed. If disturbing atmosphere is your thing, with an emphasis on 3D exploration and puzzle solving, then SH will be worth a whirl. I don't think it has the quality of Capcom's survival horror games and in fact, comes up short when compared to Konami's own masterpiece, Metal Gear Solid. Of course, there is always room for improvement and the next game may be more than you bargained for. A definite must rental with an option to purchase is my final judgement in this case!

Overall Silent Hill as suspected every one including myself instantly compared it to Capcom's Resident Evil. But shockingly enough Silent Hill snuck some originality into the game. One being Harry can't shoot for crap, second the addition of detailed maps, radio and flashlight. Plus the game is dark as dark can get even with your lights on. The Gameplay is slightly linear, point A to point B thing. But the sounds and music score will keep you freaked out. I would have to say that Silent Hill compared to Resident Evil shines in the respect to creep factor. There is an on going feeling when you play Silent Hill. The feeling of what the Hell is going on, what do you do, where do you go. And where the heck is Cheryl is she alive? What's with this Alternate World? Need I go on, I think I better not. Just welcome our new trend setter Silent Hill.

Silent Hill est un titre à ne pas mettre entre toutes les mains. Mélange d'angoisse et de mystère, la première tentative de Konami dans le secteur du survival horror est une réussite. Intégralement en 3D temps réel (à l'inverse de Resident Evil qui possède des décors précalculés), Silent Hill propose une expérience unique, mélange d'énigmes et d'action, le tout tapissé d'une ambiance baignant dans l'horreur. Ses quelques défauts techniques deviennent alors pardonnables...

Do you fear that place that you’ve only visited in a dream because it seems so real until the weird makes itself flesh? Or are you one that is a bit more grounded, only afraid of unknown, unspeakably evil things that could only happen to others, but not to you? Well, dear reader, some talented programmers at Konami have gotten hold of whatever is hidden deep in your mind and have come up with perhaps the most disturbing video game to date, the creepy and unsettling Silent Hill.

Na een dikke week bezig te zijn geweest met Silent Hill blijft er bij mij een gevoel van onbehagen hangen. Deze game had de ultieme Resident Evil Killer kunnen worden maar faalt daarin jammerlijk. Na een geweldige opening vervalt het spel in herhalingen en cliché's. What a waste.
