Gamezilla (1997)
VMX Racing is another game that will end up in the "potential pile:" the game had such potential, but just could not live up to its expectations. It is really too bad because this type of game is sorely needed for PSX, and Playmates Interactive Entertainment had a chance to dominate this type of racing game since they had no competition.
Game Players (May, 1997)
In its favor, VMX does have good intentions on its side. The PlayStation does need a straight-ahead motorcycle racing game. Unfortunately, this title doesn't have enough substance to claim any honors in the category.
Power Unlimited (Jun, 1998)
IGN (Jul 25, 1997)
If control was the game's only fault, it might be passable. However, this is the least of its worries. The graphics are, well, deplorable. It's impossible to tell where you're supposed to go, and when you're racing neck and neck with other bikers, they have a tendency to clip in and out of the screen. Good graphics probably wouldn't have saved the game, but they couldn't have hurt. To its credit, VMX Racing does have a two-player split-screen mode, but this is too little, too late. Even if you're dying for a motocross game, pass up VMX Racing.
Video Games (Aug, 1997)
GameSpot (Aug 26, 1997)
VMX Racing was poorly conceived from the get-go, and its long-delayed release reeks of a game that was given up on and released in the hopes of regaining a small bit of the cash sucked down by the game's black hole of development. It plays like a beta, and should be avoided like the plague, no matter how into motorcycle racing you might be.
Game Revolution (Jun 04, 2004)
If you didn't fall asleep reading this review, you can pretty much figure out where this game's grade is going. It's unfortunate that a lot of programmers' time and consumer's money went to waste because of a few stupid flaws. Fans of motorcross dying to have a motorcross game on the PlayStation shouldn't even waste their money on a rental. And you other folks out there should just look past this one as you peruse the game aisle.
