Polygon (Oct 25, 2013)
Apart from those overwrought boss battles, Blackgate is a welcome evolution for the Arkham series. The fresh perspective, deliberate pace and focus on exploration prove that Batman works just as well in a smaller package. Blackgate steps out of its console brothers' long shadows and marks territory all its own.
InsideGamer (Nov 28, 2013)
IGN (Oct 25, 2013)
Batman: Arkham Origins - Blackgate is a good extension of the Arkham franchise to handhelds, but it lacks the specialness or inspiration that would make it stand out as a great Metroidvania-style game - or a great Batman game, for that matter. Without any real surprises, engaging settings, or interesting story, Blackgate feels more like a retread of bullet points than the handheld Batman we truly deserve.
Retro Gamer (Dec 05, 2013)
Blackgate is let down by its confusing map, the need to detect most items of interest first before you can interact with them and some fiddly backtracking. It's an otherwise solid Metroidvania and an interesting change of direction for the Caped Crusader.

Not quite up to the standard of the console versions of Batman: Arkham Origins, but not a bad game on its own.
PlayStation Lifestyle (Oct 28, 2013)
If you can get through the glitches and barebones plot, there is a good game to be played. I had fun with Blackgate. I will be playing through it again because this is the style of game I really like. It certainly could have been better, but Blackgate is still an above average experience.
Game Informer Magazine (Oct 25, 2013)
When Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate is at its best, exploration is slow-moving and tedious, yet you’re making progress. At its worst, trekking through Blackgate is a punishing process of backtracking to find a needle in a haystack. It can be oddly fulfilling in that “The trauma of being lost has finally ended!” kind of way, but outside of the boss battles, it rarely delivers moments that live up to the legacy of this franchise or the Metroidvania style of games. It’s one of those experiences that falls apart as it unfolds.
GameSpot (Oct 25, 2013)
And this is the major conflict within Blackgate's design. When you're making forward progress, interacting with your environment, and occasionally fighting, it's a simple but enjoyable gameplay experience, but once you're forced to wrestle with the map while backtracking, and attempt to collect enough pieces to assemble a new batsuit, things start to fall apart, and Blackgate becomes a slow and frustrating slog. There is a New Game Plus option to explore after beating the game, in case you want to tackle the main villains in a different order, but there are too many frustrating elements to make that an attractive option. The first few hours of Blackgate provide an exciting glimpse of what might have been a great game, but it slowly falls apart, hour by hour, villain by villain.
Game Revolution (Nov 05, 2013)
Screw Blackgate Prison. It can’t contain any of its prisoners and it certainly can’t keep three-peat offenders like Joker, Penguin, and Black Mask under lock and key. Batman’s already had a long night, so why do we need to continue flogging him for uninspired sequels and spin-offs? ARKHAM ORIGINS serves to bring Batman back for more in an acceptable, if unbelievable narrative, but ORIGINS BLACKGATE does nothing for the character, nothing for the player, and nothing to further the Arkham series. It’s not a complete and totally broken mess, but it’s not the portable game Batman deserves and it’s not the Vita game we need right now.

Destructoid (Oct 31, 2013)
I really wanted to like Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate. It took a style of game I enjoy, but put everything together inside it so shoddily I wondered if a little more development time wouldn't have served this game better. However, since the console version of Origins is as buggy as it is, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that Blackgate feels just as unfinished and sloppy. At least it doesn't take more than five hours to beat.
Gameplay (Benelux) (Nov 27, 2013)
