DanganRonpa: Trigger Happy Havoc is a thrilling despair-filled adventure all visual fans need to check out. Even those with little to no VN experience should give it a look, as its high energy presentation, likable cast, crazy story, and unique genre-blending gives it a fresh feel that is unlike anything else.

If anyone ever again argues with me that games can't hold literary merit, I'm going to point them to Danganronpa. Spike Chunsoft's visual novel is very much like the original Saw film that heavily inspired it; what could have easily been a standard horror narrative reveals itself to have more layers than rings on an ancient tree and becomes a story experience absolutely essential for anyone that cares about good narrative. Danganronpa is ultimately the richest game narrative I've experienced in some time, and it's a game I'm going to need to play through a couple of times to fully comprehend its full value as a work of storytelling.

No matter how disturbing it may be, Danganronpa is also quite well-written, and it knows how to engage you so that it's more than just going from Point A to Point B by way of lots of gore (and yes, that's a jab at Corpse Party). It's an unsettling journey, but it's probably one worth taking.

Clocking in at around twenty hours, there is little reason to play through a second time but as is the case with a great book, once picked up it’ll be difficult to put down and when this abearrant tale has finished bearing it all, you’ll put it down with a smile on your face.
Danganronpa’s heavy storyline segments and somber themes won’t be for everyone, but for Vita owners looking for something fresh, stylish, and enthralling to play on their handheld of choice, this is an utterly fascinating game that shouldn’t be missed.

Games of this ilk are rarely for everyone, but this is a unique experience that really stands out – even in the Vita’s burgeoning library. Tripper Happy Havoc will last you a good 25 hours or more, but will keep you thoroughly captivated throughout with its mix of interactive storytelling, exploration, detective gameplay, interesting characters, and plot twists.

Despite a few shortcomings, I had nothing but a blast with Danganronpa. I'm excited for the possibility of seeing a sequel localized. Spike Chunsoft's name might be most recognizable to English-speaking audiences with 999 and VLR, but Danganronpa is an entirely different experience - in a good way. With just enough jokes, twists, and awkward moments to remind you of high school, I can't help but recommend Makoto's journey to Hope's Peak Academy.

Spike Chunsoft entführt einen mit DanganRonpa in eine hermetisch abgeriegelte Eliteschule, die man nur als erfolgreicher Mörder oder Leiche wieder verlassen kann. Als einer von 15 unfreiwilligen Gefangenen ist man einem zermarternden Psychoterror ausgesetzt, der die Grenzen zwischen Kameradschaft und Rivalität verschwimmen, in ungeahnte seelische Abgründe blicken und Hoffnung in Verzweiflung umschlagen lässt - und das alles vor den Kameras eines geheimnisvollen Unbekannten, der nur über eine bizarre Bärenpuppe mit den Eingesperrten in Kontakt tritt. Es müssen Regeln befolgt, Vergehen rekonstruiert, Täter entlarvt und makabere Urteile ertragen werden. Der markant inszenierte Überlebenskampf lässt sich dabei sogar an individuelle Rätsel- und Actionbedürfnisse anpassen. Nur deutsche Untertitel oder die in Japan inkludierte Fortsetzung sucht man leider vergebens. Für Krimifans führt trotzdem kein Weg an diesem packenden Anime-Thriller vorbei!

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc is a wonderful fusion of the text-heavy visual novel genre with Phoenix Wright-like murder investigations and trials. Its quirky humor – made all the better by excellent writing and interesting characters – is constantly unsettled by the seriousness of the plot, making for a unique adventure that Vita gamers owe it to themselves to experience.

Scritta benissimo e recitata ancora meglio dai suoi attori virtuali, questa visual novel prende a noleggio meccaniche provenienti da altri generi ludici per ravvivare la parte interattiva, eppure, paradossalmente, i suoi momenti più alti necessiteranno degli occhi dell'utente molto di più che dei suoi polpastrelli: se leggere molto, per giunta in inglese, non vi spaventa, non potete non dare un'occasione a questo titolo.

All the pitfalls of the visual novel genre still apply, including the large issue of replayability – once you know the story, that’s pretty much it. Still, if you are a fan of the genre, this isn’t a problem, and if you aren’t, Danganronpa is not the game to convince you otherwise. Everyone else should pick up and enjoy one of the most exciting and brain-twisting adventures on a PlayStation system. Playing like a mixture of Phoenix Wright, Virtue’s Last Reward and Persona, Danganronpa is a compelling and thrilling visual novel with great writing and characterisation. Anyone in the mood for a good murder mystery should get on it, quick sharp.

Si tu experiencia en el género se limita a cosas como 999 o Virtue’s, Danganronpa es más que aconsejable, especialmente si lo que te interesa de esos juegos es la historia. Y si eres de los que piensas que una Visual Novel es forzosamente un juego de citas -o algo más “intenso”- Danganronpa es una buena introducción al género y a sus grandes posibilidades narrativas, no demasiado estereotipado y muy original en su planteamiento. Un juego muy recomendable en cualquier caso.

Più che un vero e proprio gioco, Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc è una storia da assaporare un poco alla volta, un atmosfera, malata e sinistramente assuefacente, in cui immergersi prestando attenzione ad ogni dettaglio, un esperimento da cui apprendere una lezione importantissima, ma da osservare senza il classico distacco degli scienziati. Imperfetto nella sua componente ludica, fin troppo lineare, ripetitivo come ogni avventura di matrice nipponica sa essere, vi regalerà uno dei migliori intrecci narrativi a cui avrete preso parte su una console portatile.

Danganronpa may miss the mark with many gamers because of the style of game it is. However, if you’re ready for a solid story and intriguing characters, it’s a great time to bust out the Vita and give the game a try. What you’ll find is a great adventure title that will find you guessing at every turn.

DanganRonpa is a very stylistic murder-mystery/action-adventure game that plays a bit like Phoenix Wright, 999, and a dating simulator combined. There’s something for everybody, but the plot is extremely compelling by itself. There’s a lot of reading involved, so if you don’t like text-heavy games, this might not be for you; however, if you like the Phoenix Wright series and don’t mind a dark story, I can almost guarantee you’ll love this game. The length of the game isn’t too bad: it’s about 25 hours long, assuming you aren’t trying to 100% the galleries. In about 27.5 hours I was able to complete the game, complete the report card for all the characters, and get a couple runs of school mode in. Finally, the game looks much better than the PSP version and contains extra content, so even if you’ve played it before, it’s worth playing again.
