AFL Premiership 2006 is the best AFL game yet but still has someway to go before it can compete with the FIFA and NBA’s of the sports gaming world. What it sets out to do it does well and considering we’re now entering the PS3 era, it’s exciting IR Gurus got it so right for what will probably be the final PS2 game and makes us wonder if it jumps to PS3, which we are sure it will, what we can expect from those south of the NSW border call the best game of all.

IR Gurus have finally provided a game which, while not perfect, is enjoyable to play. AFL Premiership 2006 is certainly better then last years effort (the review of which you can check out here). The level of polish has been increased significantly and it appears that making this game a PS2 exclusive has done wonders as the developer could concentrate resources on a single system. If you're an AFL fan then this game is worth checking out, just don't expect miracles.

Despite its many limitations, AFL Premiership 2006 plays much better than its predecessor and is an easier game to recommend for those who must have an AFL video game in their lives. Everyone else, particularly those used to the slick gameplay and presentation of other sports franchises, should probably stay away and cross their fingers in the hope that next year's AFL video game offering is a vast improvement.

AFL Premiership 2006 is yet another sub par offering from IR Gurus. In the year that has been since last year’s game, the studio has made little worthwhile differences or improvements to the game. Instead of going to the effort of adding two new gameplay modes, the team would have better spent their time working out the game’s numerous problems and resolving them. We’d much rather play a game that runs smoothly, controls beautifully and looks great; not a game that feels severely aged and rushed. It’s the type of sloppy mess that we would have expected last generation, and not a game that has been released at the end of the current-generation of consoles.
