To say Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex is a bad game because it plays similarly to the previous three is unfair. After all, people found nothing wrong with six different versions of Street Fighter 2 or four Sonic: The Hedgehog games on the Genesis. Why should Crash's case be any different? If anything, the latest Crash is the best of the bunch. It manages to retain the classic gameplay features that made the first three so great, at the same time emphasizing on the formula as well, by featuring nearly a dozen crafts and vehicles to choose from, and two fully playable characters. While the innovation is missing, the fun and the amusement is all there, and that's what matters most.

Crash Bandicoot is a game that isn't annoying to be around while someone else plays it (something I wish were true of more console games). It's okay for almost all ages and doesn't expose kids to anything they wouldn't see in a Road Runner cartoon. And you may even get non-console playing people to play it.

Any Crash Bandicoot fan would be a fool not to go out and buy this game. I started playing at 2am one night and did not stop until three in the afternoon! Granted, I took a few breaks and wrote most of my review that night, however, I spent the majority of the time playing Crash 4. I couldn't stand to play the other Crash games all night long if my life depended on it, but Crash 4 is so entertaining that I just couldn't stop.

Vielä enemmän kiukuttaa kun ajattelen miten hyvin tämäkin uudelleenlämmitys todennäköisesti myy; Crashin naamataulu kun on tuttu suurelle yleisölle ja lyhyellä markettikokeilulla näkee jo vaikka minkälaista jännää kenttää. Samalla vaikkapa sellainen aidosti laadukas ja rakkaudella tehty peli kuin Klonoa 2 enimmäkseen kerää pölyä keskellä suurta tuntemattomuutta. Tämäkö on pelaamisen tulevaisuus, samaa peliä kentät hiukan eri järjestyksessä uusille koneille?

All in all, Crash isn’t a bad game, nor a great one like Crash: Warped was. So if there’s a new Crash game, I’m hoping the formula is tampered with, the load times are diminished, and Cortex isn’t ever heard from again. Unless they use my title.

When you have a look at this game and then have a look at Naughty Dog's Jak & Daxter you have to wonder what this game could have been. I'm not saying that Travellers Tales has done a bad job, far from it. This is a great platform game that fails because of a lack of new ideas. People who have played previous games in the series will know what is in this. Perhaps if Travellers Tales had incorporated some more free roaming levels then this game would be worth more of a look. Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex is a solid platform game, let down by a lack of originality.

Crash Bandicoot : The Wrath of Cortex is an excellent platform game that most Crash fans will be pleased with. It is both funny and exhilarating. However those who didn't get on with the earlier Crash games will find nothing here to change their opinion. The lack of subtitles to explain the story and the obscene loading times are just plain wrong but these problems aside, this is still one of the best platform games on the PS2.

Over the years with Crash Bandicoot, I've had a weird time. Back in the PlayStation days, I felt overwhelmed by Crash marketing, dolls, and one new Crash game a year, including a technically good kart game that felt wholly unoriginal. Now that we're on the new system, the weight of all that stuff has fallen by the wayside, and I'm less hateful of the marsupial known as Crash. In fact, I have a strange endearment for him, or it, whatever.

Is this game going to bring back memories of nostalgia? Yes, of course they will. It seems that Traveler’s Tales learned how to use load times, this version loads a whole lot less than the PS2 and even Xbox versions. On the plus side, some of the minigames like the hamster ball are pretty neat, and some of the levels are the same way. There are some really neat ones towards the end. I recommend this to Crash fans, lots to enjoy here. With games like Mario Sunshine, though, Crash doesn't stand out too much to casual gamers.
GameSpot (Nov 01, 2001)
For better or worse, The Wrath of Cortex is no different from previous Crash Bandicoot games. Those who have yet to tire of Crash's spin-and-jump gameplay mechanics will be mildly entertained, but those who have seen their interest in the franchise waning over the years should steer clear. The graphics are solid and there's little doubt that the characters still have a broad appeal, but a lack of innovation and a reliance upon the tried and true make Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex more of an upgrade to the PlayStation games than a new experience.

Overall, The Wrath of Cortex is a disappointment for me. With the power of the PS2, Crash could have been much more open, less linear, and had faster load times. The load times are a huge complaint and a major nuisance, especially when you are in a rush to get some game time in. In between the warp room and any level it could take you up to 45 seconds to load! This is ridiculous for a PS2 game, especially since some other games only take 10 seconds. Do yourself a favor and buy Jak & Daxter instead of this game. You can thank me later.
PSM (Dec, 2001)
Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex isn't a horrible game - it just has a lot of rough edges, and really doesn't offer that much new for fans of the series. We could have excused that last bit if it were as finely tuned and tweaked as the last three games, but it simply isn't. There's still come real fun to be had, it just comes at a price (and lots of waiting).
GamePro (US) (Oct 30, 2001)
If you're frightened of things that change, or are one of those Nintendo fans who called out for blood when Nintendo unveiled Link's new fashion sense, then The Wrath of Cortex will likely be a welcome breath of stale air. If you were hoping the new management would give Crash a big kick in the pants, however, this is one pair of pants you will find quite unkicked.
PlayFrance (Apr 07, 2003)
ITavisen (Dec 20, 2001)
The Video Game Critic (Nov 17, 2001)
While the graphics are superb for the most part, I have to take exception to the new "jungle" stages. The exotic, lush jungles of the old Bandicoot games have been replaced with fairy-tale forests - bad call! Also, the so-so music is not up to the old Crash Bandicoot standards. Wrath of Cortex is not a bad game, but Bandicoot vets will not be impressed.
Electric Playground (Nov 13, 2001)
Wrath of Cortex is less a total botch than it is a major disappointment and certainly the least compelling chapter in the Crash saga. The new designers have played it much too safe here. No piece of the Crash formula has been re-imagined in the least here, and in some cases the basic mechanics of play have degenerated. The only good thing that might come out of this tepid, lazy sequel is that it will send designers back to the drawing board, hopefully to think a bit harder about the possibilities for this franchise on next generation consoles.
