Consoles Plus (May, 2002)
Un bon titre, mais qui ne renverse pas tout sur son passage.
Holy cow, someone listened! Konami fixed most every beef I expressed with the original PS2 NBA 2Night. It's even gotten up to speed with Franchise mode, and player stats and attributes. Its look and play (rim physics, shots in paint, etc.) are still lacking some smoothness and the audio's pretty sad (lame music and play-by-play), but ESPN NBA 2Night definitely receives the Most Improved Series award. There's good offense/defense balance, rebounding, blocking, and nice extras like dives and the end-game Double Clutch recap.

A very good basketball game provided it’s given a chance. Perhaps not the most complete basketball title, but definitely a contender.
Game Vortex (Dec 07, 2002)
I've had the pleasure of playing some great basketball games this season. ESPN NBA 2Night 2002 was not one of them. Rent if you must, because this game throws up a huge brick!
Operation Sports (Apr 07, 2002)
Konami certainly has improved this game over its initial effort. It may not be in the same league as NBA 2K2 in the area of gameplay, but it does have other elements that make it a relatively fun experience. If the developers can put as much emphasis on gameplay as they do in the franchise mode, this series might actually become something noteworthy.
IGN (Feb 26, 2002)
ESPN NBA 2Night 2002 does not reach the bar set by NBA Live 2002. It's not altogether a dismal title, but the rebounding and passing flaws bring it down pretty far. Which is a shame, because the game looks very good, the sounds of basketball are fairly represented and the color commentator, if you like Stuart Scott, is amusing to a greater degree than it is repetitive. If you have not enjoyed the NBA Live series in the past, give Konami's game a try. Otherwise, may we suggest NBA Inside Drive on Xbox.
GameSpy (Apr 20, 2002)
The problem, of course, is despite this nice presentation, who wants to play a game of basketball this flawed? The passing is awkward; even with the icon passing option, it's clumsy at best. The shots that your players take don't seem to correlate to how the actual sport works. The defense is magnetic and unrelenting, and the visuals are merely adequate. The franchise mode is nice, but it's nothing that can't be found in other, better-playing and better-looking games.

PSX Extreme (Apr 15, 2002)
Overall, NBA 2Night is little more than an example of a game that could have, and should have, been done a lot better. The lack of effort in this game is almost palpable, and what little work was put forth does nothing but simply propel this game to the middle of the pack at best. If you are a casual fan of basketball games, this is certainly not the title for you, simply because it is not representative of what the industry is capable of when it comes to making a good basketball game. If you are a die-hard fan of basketball, you would be best off by sticking with your NBA 2K2, or some reasonable facsimile. There are some series that don't belong in this industry, and this is certainly one of them. To put it another way, ESPN NBA 2Night is the Army Men of basketball games.
GameSpot (Mar 01, 2002)
ESPN NBA 2Night 2002 really has nothing that would make it worth recommending over a number of other basketball games for the PlayStation 2.
Gaming Age (May 01, 2002)
There are just too many other valuable options when looking for a decent basketball title to even consider NBA 2 Night. It doesn't do any one thing better than something that is already on the market. It just does everything not quite as well. If for some reason you've waited this long to compare 2 Night with NBA2K2 and NBA Live, I'm sorry to tell you that it wasn't worth the wait.
Gamekult (May 14, 2002)
Patience... NBA 2K2 ne devrait plus trop tarder.
Game Revolution (Mar, 2002)
But again, this isn't enough to make up for the annoying gameplay hitches. Compared to games like NBA 2K2 and even NBA Street, there's really just no room on the court for NBA 2Night 2002.
