F1 2005 really is the game that Liverpool have been wanting to make for a while but had to build up to it. Whether this is their PS2 swansong is unknown and only SCEJ knows this but if it is, they've gone out with a blast as this is by far the most authentic F1 game yet.

Formula One 2005 isn't the greatest game on PS2, hell the graphics and audio still need some work, but on a gameplay level Formula One 2005 is the real deal. From arcade to full-on simulation this game has you covered. Certainly one which race fans should consider adding to their collection.

It must have been reverberating through Sony’s corporate headquarters: a new racing season, we demand a new race game! Psygnosis’/Sony’s F1 series has had an annual release since 1996 and for a few years, Sony's own Studio Liverpool has been heading development. Just like their EA Sports brethren, it becomes difficult to justify the yearly updates as new full-priced games. This is already the fifth instalment to appear on the PlayStation 2.

As with any other videogame based on a sport one of the main factors that will determine how well a player receives Formula One 2005 will depend on how much the player actually enjoys the sport, fans of F1 racing will want to check this out as it’s a very good simulation of the sport and a good knowledge of Formula One racing techniques will certainly give a player an advantage over a player who does not follow the sport at all. The game is good fun and very fast but suffers from the fact that it can get repetitive after a while as the majority of the tracks look virtually the same.

F1 2005 is genuinely capable of being one of the most intense and comprehensive takes on Formula One available on the PS2. On the track the controls are punchy, the spectacle convincing enough and the simulation perhaps excessive, which guarantees it a large audience. And the inclusion this year of ten-player online options (albeit limited to 50Hz display mode only, rather than the options of 60Hz and progressive-scan which make it into the rest of the game) is a darn sight more impressive than last year's ghost car effort - and works as well as any PS2 Online game might be expected to do. But whether you'll enjoy it probably comes down to that question of how you'd learn to swim. If F1 compels you and you don't mind home-schooling, then this is a good buy. Otherwise you might want to stick with Gran Turismo.
