Ghost Rider doesn't raise the bar. It borrows shamelessly from some great games and ideas, it doesn't quite mesh them quite right but is still at the end of the day...a fun game!

I cannot stress enough how nakedly Ghost Rider rips off God of War. The controls are exactly the same (with the exception of the slightly different special moves). The upgrade system is nearly identical. The combat feels incredibly similar, except that it’s somewhat laggier and less responsive. None of the exceedingly minor variances from the God of War formula make an appreciable difference. Only the Hellbike levels differ in any meaningful way, and those are leagues worse than the shockingly derivative main game anyway.

But in our opinion, Ghost Rider is one of those instances where the overall product is greater than the sum of its parts. Not much greater, mind you, but it might satisfy fans of both the movie and the comic book. It's fast-paced, it's accessible enough, there are plenty of moves for the casual gamer, and it's got plenty of unlockable fanservice extras. You can unlock concept art, the Making of Ghost Rider, full comic book editions, and you'll even be able to play as Blade once you complete the main quest with Ghost Rider. Blade has his own assortment of weapons and moves, too. Therefore, while it certainly isn't what we'd call a good action game, it does hold some simplistic and juvenile appeal. And sometimes, that's all we really want for an hour or two. It's too bad that they had to steal just about everything, and the problems continued to mount up with every passing level...ah well, the search for a top-notch movie-turned-game continues.

This PS2 version is far more enjoyable than its PSP cousin, if only because the controller is far more condusive to button mashing. It's mindless fun, and for fans of the movie there's plenty of bonus material to unlock, including film clips, interviews, and comic-book stories.

2k Games have done a terrific job... a copy-paste job that ripped off God of War's gameplay elements mixed them with Devil May Cry features, added a bit of Onimusha and salt and came up with a half-baked title. The hero may have a flaming skull, but we, the gamers will be the ones flaming the producers for their initiative. However, this game can become an aperitif before the release of God of War 2, since it brings back what most gamers loved about the original GOW game.

If you have the sort of disposable income that allows you to spend thirty quid on a short-lived and rather bland diversion, or if you have an intensely adolescent fondness for flames, skulls and chains, then I dare say you'll find Ghost Rider to be 'not that bad'. And it's not. Not in the grand scheme of things. But nor is it the sort of game that deserves your time, money or a score higher than five. Besides, Moon Knight could totally beat Ghost Rider in a fight.

Ultimately, Ghost Rider can only ride the waves of successful series for so long before its own shortcomings drag it to the middle of the heap. The level design and longevity just isn't there to make this more than a rental or a bargain-big pick-up -- especially with God of War II's release closing fast. This rider is anything but the leader of the pack.

What is absolutely remarkable about the game is its combo system, and that is not meant as any sort of compliment. The combo meter can be built up through six levels by performing varied attacks, but the combo meter gets reset if Ghost Rider takes any damage at all. This might not be such a big deal except for the fact that some enemies have an unbreakable shield around them that can only be broken by reaching certain combo levels and then breaking the shield. This makes for one of the most frustrating gameplay mechanics ever devised, and those responsible should be forced to undergo a Penance Stare, the only thing likely to get across to them just how evil this idea was.

Forgettable doesn’t begin to describe this game. A game based on Ghost Rider deserves more than slapping together a derivative beat-’em-up with a flaming-skulled biker as its key character. This game is Ghost Rider in name only and stands as the grossest example of wasted potential. While Ghost Rider may avenge the blood of the innocent, the only thing I can offer to avenge the loss of cash from even renting this disc-full-of-boredom is the advice to avoid it at all costs.
UOL Jogos (Mar 02, 2007)

It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of Ghost Rider: My blog header is covered with his image, my board icon is the Spirit of Vengeance, and I often use his name when I'm playing multiplayer games. Unfortunately, this game is not what Ghost Rider fans are looking for in an action title. The combat is repetitive and clunky, the driving is horrid, and the plot is completely useless. While the game is still functional and not horrendously broken, it's not good by any stretch of the imagination, and you're not going to find yourself replaying this game after you beat it in an afternoon. If you really feel the need to play this game, definitely rent it and save the cash.
GameSpot (Feb 15, 2007)
Though it's hard to be shocked these days when a movie-licensed game isn't quite up to snuff, Ghost Rider is legitimately surprising in just how poor a game it is. That it goes so far out of its way to usurp qualities from multiple major action adventure franchises, then proceeds to trot out the dullest, blandest beat-'em-up possible with those lifted mechanics is mind-boggling. Fans of the comic will be depressed with how poorly their favorite hero is utilized here, and fans of action adventure games won't be able to shake the feeling that they're playing a bad bootleg of games they've already played before. Indeed, Ghost Rider is ultimately just another flaming corpse to toss on the pile of failed licensed action games.
