A lack of variety is really the biggest problem here. A few mini-games might have really helped, possibly involving the huge Lawmaster bike that Dredd rides in many of the cut-scenes. Despite these problems, this is easily the best rendition of the 2000AD universe outside of the comics, and the game retains much of the satirical humour. Just walking round reading the many billboards can be very entertaining, as they really capture the spirit of Dredd. The Dawn of the Dead-inspired shopping mall level also deserves a mention for both its combination of zombies and shotguns and the amusing tannoy messages that occasionally drown out the muzak. There are lots of references for aficionados to spot, and its nice to see Rebellion giving the fans what they want in the shape of Judge Death, rather than basing a whole game around a lesser character like Mean Machine.

I was, how shall I put it, a little afraid that this “Dredd vs Death” would not stand up to my standard. “Medal of Honor: Frontline” is one of my all time favorites and I thought “Red Faction”, although different, was going to extend that pleasure. It did not glue me to the television for a very long time, however.

GameSpot (Mar 17, 2005)
Released in Europe in 2003, the game hasn't gotten a whole lot better with age. It's a short, simplistic shooter that's not worth even its budget price.
IGN (Mar 03, 2005)
A budget shooter for the indiscriminate casual gamer, Dredd vs. Death offers little to fans of the FPS genre, especially considering the quality of its competitors. For those starved action gamers in need of an immediately accessible fix, there is still some strange sense of joy to be found in pointlessly gunning down the minions of evil in colorful environments. Fans of the fiction will finally appreciate a style that keeps the faith, but will wonder how this game could have done its source material the same sort of disservice the decade old movie did.

With the world the way it is now, the twisted satire of "Judge Dredd" could have been perfect. Imagine a mutated Donald Rumsfeld as a boss, or better, head of the Justice Department. Instead, we get a depressingly face-value take on a dystopian future that works neither as a game or a parody, except of itself. There's some humor in each arrest procedure, but it wears thin quickly. And with such poorly developed satire, do we really need to be playing out scenarios where the main character arrests a town square full of anti-fascist demonstrators? Shooting hookers may be OK, but that's just kind of sick. "Dredd Versus Death" is merely another unpleasant footnote to a long-misunderstood career.
