Description official descriptions

The Madden football series moves onto a new console generation with Madden NFL 2001 for PlayStation 2. This version comes with an all-new graphics and physics engine, its own selection of modes and teams, and several unique features.

Besides highly detailed players, the new graphics engine for the first time offers such visual elements as players sitting on the bench, coaches walking the sidelines, line judges dropping their markers, grass sticking to players' helmets and rain drop splashes. Movement is now momentum-based, with players' height and weight taken into account upon running and changing direction, and hit location and speed determining how the tackle plays out.

Gameplay modes include a selection of those available on other platforms and include exhibition games, season, franchise and practice. A new mode is Quick Play which sets up a quick random game. For beginners, the game includes an Easy Play mode which simplifies the playbook, makes passes easier and auto-assists on running and receiving.

The game includes a large number of teams, second only to the PC version: the 31 regular teams of the 2000 NFL season, the 1999 All-Madden team, 31 all-time franchise teams, the 6 NFL Europe teams plus 124 classic NFL teams.

The game also includes the Madden Cards mode seen in the previous generation's version, even though the challenges differ slightly: by completing certain objectives in the game, players gain tokens that can be used to buy collectible Madden Cards. These cards offer upgrades of players' stats, unlock classic players as well as hidden teams and stadiums and can trigger various gameplay cheats and gags.

Above average football keeping consistent with the Madden lineage

The Good
Graphically this game is clean and well executed. Fine details such as eye movement, glove adjusting, and leg stretching add that fine touch that make you feel like you are watching Monday Night Football. When you really goof up you get a nice cut scene of your coach shouting or slumping in disappointment. Picking plays is great once you get past the learning curve on locating the plays in your play book. Since you can also choose other play books for your team, this can get confusing. Players have great physics where if your player is running high speed and you want to turn him around it takes a little time for him to stop and then shift his momentum in the new direction. Some people miss crisp movement execution but I found this feature excellent for gameplay.

The Bad
There are a couple of things that could be improved in this game. I am not a programmer but I still see players walking through referee's and other players as well as body parts going through objects. My major gripe with this game is the difficulty that I had trying to save and restore games. The interface is too cluttered with multiple files to save. When trying to continue a season, it does not appear to work in the way that the documentation or the help system denote. Numerous times I ended up simulating the entire game week including the game that I wanted to play! This then caused be to cancel all of the changes and reload by save to try it again. Very counter productive.

The Bottom Line
If you want to play some football that is lovingly detailed, check out Madden!

Trivia

EA cover curse

Madden 2001 is credited with starting the EA cover curse by featuring a player on the front of the box instead of John Madden himself. Since then, players on the cover of EA games have seemed to have horrible seasons, severe injuries, and legal troubles.

After going to three consecutive pro bowls and leading the Titans to a Superbowl appearance, Eddie George earned the cover spot on Madden 2001. One season later, his all-purpose yards went from 1962 with 16 touchdowns to 1218 with 5 touchdowns.
