A not-so great port of a great game. Still enjoyable and worth buying, though. phanboy_iv (137) 4.33 Stars4.33 Stars4.33 Stars4.33 Stars4.33 Stars

Clocking in at around ten hours, the game is short enough that it keeps the entertainment value throughout. Since players are unlikely to find everything in a single play through, the game also features good replayability. With spot-on controls and side-splitting humor, Psychonauts is an easy recommendation.
Although the gameplay mechanics stay firmly rooted in the tried-and-true, Psychonauts is really set apart by its narrative and environment. This is a rather bold statement, but I find Psychonauts to be the most fun traditional 3D platform game I have played on the current generation of consoles. This game just exuberates personality and character like I've never seen. If you own a PS2 (or Xbox or PC), you owe it to yourself to play this game.

As if you aren't already getting your shoes on to run to the store and get this game, let me finish you off with a swift kick in the pants: go on and get this game. Between the fun gameplay, the varied and creative environments, the great story, imaginative cast of characters, and, of course, the trademark Schafer sense of humor, there is very little that can go wrong here. Unless, of course, your brain has already been stolen by an evil member of the medical profession. In which case you need to run to the store that much faster.

Psychonauts gehört in jede Spielesammlung.
Worth Playing (Jul 20, 2005)
Rather than the simple, carefree summer camp you would expect it to be, Psychonauts is all about developing your abilities to become a psychic warrior. You play as Raz, and your first mission is to complete a basic training course that's located inside the mind of Coach Morrie Oleander. You learn about the basics: figments, emotional baggage, jumping and double-jumping, climbing up ropes and poles, sliding on railings, shimmying, and lastly, how to use your standard attack, the punch. For me, a successful game is one that is both nicely put together and enjoyable, and Psychonauts delivers on both counts.

Psychonauts is my favorite of its genre in years and years: the genre, of course, being story-driven, puzzle-focused graphical adventures for which its creator, Tim Schafer, is famous. Granted, it might look like a 3D platformer, but then, Deus Ex looked like a first-person shooter when it was really an RPG, and Phantom Dust looks like a melee action game when it's really about cards.

Do dreams come true? At this stage in my life I'd say yes, but I'll have to get back to you in 20 years to give a final answer. For Raz, a troubled boy with psychic powers, dreams are not necessarily what he hopes will come true. His home life is really messed up. Damaged by a curse, his living family lives in fear, hoping the curse isn't real, hoping that it dies a myth.

It also helps that the game has more to it than just a lot of jumping around. There are puzzles to be solved in Psychonauts, as well as battles to be fought, and both require use of Raz's list of crazy psychic powers. You start out only with a basic melee attack at your disposal, but as you play and collect items scattered about both the real world and mental worlds, you'll be able to upgrade Raz's rank and earn new powers, like telekinesis, pyrokinesis, levitation, invisibility, and clairvoyance. The best part is that there will be crazy situations constantly thrown at you where you'll have to change your powers regularly (as you can only have three assigned at one time).

Tim Schafer has a loyal legion of fanboys for good reason. The creator of PC classics Full Throttle and Grim Fandango `is one of the most innovative game designers in the industry. Previously, Schafer worked at LucasArts, but left the company a half-decade ago to start his own company, Double Fine Productions. After a long journey that involved multiple publishers and a slow development process, and an unexpected port to the PS2, Psychonauts has finally landed on store shelves.
This is one can't-miss adventure. Psychonauts isn't perfect by any means (and, to be honest, even less so on PS2), but the gameplay flaws are mad up for the quality writing, great level design, and the undeniably unique experience. Between Xbox and PS2, the Sony version has more aggravating instances of the main tech problems I had on the earlier release - load times, depth perception issues, and jaggies being the most grating. Still well worth playing on PS2, but if you have a choice, go Xbox.
If the PS2 iteration will be your only opportunity to play Psychonauts, you owe it to yourself to experience this hilarious and charming adventure; despite visual issues, it's still an unforgettable game. However, if you can play it on Xbox, you get the whole package with a lot more polish - plus, you don't have to picture yourself pathetically stuffing floor food into your craw.

Psychonauts is a game that will probably come and go without much fanfare unfortunately. People are crying out for new styles of gameplay, which Psychonauts delivers, but we have a feeling that even if we tell you to go out and buy or at least try, most people will find themselves tempted by a more mainstream title, which is a shame.

I first heard about Psychonauts a few years ago, and at first it was just the title. I imagined a futuristic sci-fi shooter with robots, jet packs, lasers and various icky aliens. Imagine my surprise when it turned out to be a comedic platformer starring a goggled hero named Rasputin.
GameSpy (Jun 23, 2005)
Although it features some fairly standard platforming action, there haven't been many games that can match Psychonauts' originality. The team at Double Fine has managed to seamlessly combine sumptuous, mind-bending visuals and a downright funny script to create one of the most inventive games to hit the PS2. It doesn't quite measure up to the Xbox version due to the framerate and texture issues, but this isn't one of those games that's all about graphics. It's about having fun, and Psychonauts delivers on all fronts.
