R-Type Final has everything I hoped it would: lots of ships, lots of shooting, and no feeble attempts to update the gameplay for a next generation system. It's the classic R-Type formula you know and love, complete with limited continues, huge alien bosses, and ridiculous firepower. It is also extremely difficult, and a must-have for die-hard fans of the genre.

My one real beef with R-Type Final is the lack of a stage select. In a game like this where the early levels are long and intense, you really shouldn't have to replay all the levels you've conquered. But overall, R-Type Final is still the best pure shooter to come out in years.

Normaali-ihminen älyää lopettaa kun seitsemän kenttää on kertaalleen läpäisty. Silti Kazuma oli oikeassa, Final on sarjan paras.

Fans of the old arcade-style game, it’s time to rejoice. If you plunked a stream of quarters into an old arcade game called R-Type, then Fresh Games, Irem Software and Eidos Interactive has just the treat you’ve been waiting for. R-Type Final, a PlayStation2 release, captures the joys and essence of the old arcade shooter while bringing fresh environments to the effort.

If R-Type must end, at least it's going out on a high note--rest assured that Final lives up to the classic R-Type name in every way. Shooter fans, we've got sad news for you: R-Type is over. The franchise that defined many gamers' early memories of the side-scrolling shooter genre and that has you piloting a lone spaceship against hundreds of enemies is at last being put out to pasture with the aptly titled R-Type Final. Shooters with 2D gameplay are few enough these days as it is, with only the recent Ikaruga and the upcoming Gradius V to carry the standard.

Despite a general lack of excitement in these past months leading up to its release, R-Type Final's February swan song is a sad day for the thousands that grew up with it. Dominating the arcade shooter market since 1987, the series has always been one of the true legends in the videogame world and has gone on to inspire plenty of imitations, clones, and wannabes in the generations since (c'mon now, you didn't really think that Katakis, Abadox, and Xexex were spawned out of nowhere did you?). Needless to say, this last shot at R-Type is quite a big deal -- even if the greater part of today's mainstream may never even have heard of it.

Many say shoot 'em ups are dead in this day and age. If so, then R-Type Final does the most marvelous resurrection act we've seen since John Travolta's post- Saturday Night Fever career. Blending furious action with a bountiful selection of playable vessels, tremendous visuals, and the most finger-numbing play experience in ages, it's not only a fun diversion, but a throwback to a simpler gaming era. It's a fitting epitaph for a venerated series, which first burst onto the scene way back in 1987.

Releasing a 2D side-scrolling shooter may seem like suicide in today?s 3D-happy, hi-res-heavy world, but R-Type wouldn?t be the game it is if it were anything but 2D. Fortunately, the classic Irem shooter play mechanics are fully intact, but this time, they?re matched to a dynamite polygonal graphics engine that takes advantage of the PS2?s processor power.

Don't be mistaken, R-Type is a side-scrolling shooter with a magnificent 3D background. All action takes place in ships, with well-detailed backgrounds varying by level. The levels actually greatly differ, from a forest, city, and a factory. The spirit of arcade gaming is captured in R-Type Final, making it the most memorable side-scroller, on the PS2, to date.

As gaming evolves, it is only natural that some genres will go the way of the dodo. The industry is, after all, about money and progress, and game companies often stay away from things that are no longer profitable or fail to push technological boundaries. But despite these trends, a company will occasionally return to the classics for a little slice of retro heaven.

It’s going to be this or Gradius V that gets shooter of the year in 2004. R-Type Final may be the best R-Type ever made, but it’s still not Ikaruga in terms of quality. Although R-Type Final has a lot of extras and is beautiful to look at, it still lacks some of the challenge and gameplay found in other shooters. Still, this is a game that gets one of my highest possible recommendations. But it may not be for everyone due to the difficulty and the fact gamers have gotten that half the fun is in the challenge. And dodging fire from a few dozen enemies ships at once.

At any rate, if R-Type Final is indeed the last game in this long running series, fans can be happy that the title goes out on a relatively high note. While R-Type Final never reaches the lofty shmup heights of Ikaruga, it's still a rock-solid twitch gameplay experience and a nice reminder of what games used to be like. Sure, the slowdown is an unfortunate negative, but the rest of the game is overwhelmingly solid. R-Type Final might not bring any new tricks to the table, but it certainly takes what it does best and enhances it ever-so-slightly for a new generation of gamers.

For the hardest of the hardcore, this game has a lot of replay value (including an amazing list of 101 ships that can be unlocked), but for most - myself included - it isn't entertaining enough to even justify purchase (even at it's bargain basement price of $29.99).

If you've ever played 1998's PlayStation masterpiece R-Type Delta, then you'll know exactly what to expect from the gameplay of R-Type Final. No matter which of the game's 100 ships you pilot, you'll still have three unique lasers, a charge shot, and a special "Force" pod that can attach to your ship for either defensive purposes or to bolster firepower. Even the "Delta" weapon returns, a long-in-charging, screen-clearing smartbomb that will make short work of smaller enemies. As such, R-Type Final relies mostly on nice graphics and its huge assortment of ships to differentiate itself from its 32-bit predecessor. In this, I've found, it's only partially successful.
