Splinter Cell Chaos Theory takes the stealth FPS to the next level. It is obvious that Ubi Soft put a lot of time and effort into every aspect of this game and it shows at every level. For me it is very rare to give a game top marks in every category, but in the case of SC Chaos Theory it is well deserved, and I knew it from the moment I started playing the first mission, and I was never disappointed from start to finish.

Up until now, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell has been an Xbox exclusive -- meaning that if you were holding a Dual Shock 2 or GameCube controller, you were SOL (and here that doesn't stand for Sons of Liberty). PS2 owners are now finally getting their chance to see what all the buzz is about. On the older black box, the graphics may not be as crisp, but Splinter Cell still ranks as one of the best action games for the system. If you've been itching since last Christmas to throw on a pair of night-vision goggles and go hide in some of the world's most dangerous and exotic locations, your wait is over.

The Splinter Cell games are something of a conundrum. On any system, they offer intelligent storytelling, great gameplay, and impressive visuals. However, the Xbox version of each entry has clearly been the best, and Chaos Theory is no different. But that doesn’t mean that the PS2 version isn’t a hell of a game in its own right.

Anyone who played either of the first two Splinter Cell games will feel right at home with Chaos Theory. Sneaking through the shadows and taking enemies down silently remains the focus of the game. You’ll still be watching your visibility meter very carefully. You’ll still want to focus more on stealth than shooting. Fisher can still hang from pipes, shoot out lights, and do most anything you want him to. This stealth system has worked marvelously in the past two games, but that wasn’t good enough for Ubisoft. They have added new moves and gadgets and these aren’t just gimmicks to make you buy the game; they add to the strategy perfectly.

Avec des modes multi innovants et une réalisation somptueuse, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory confirme tout le bien qu'on pensait déjà de Sam Fisher. En reprenant les bases des deux premiers volets, mais en poussant plus loin le challenge de l'infiltration, il s'agit très certainement du meilleur épisode de la série !

These days, when a game gets released on multiple consoles simultaneously, the result is generally that the Xbox version has slightly better textures, the PS2 controller is a bit more responsive, and if there's a PC version, it's higher resolution. Every now and then there will be system specific features like an extra level or character, but for the most part those days seem to be behind us.

Sam Fisher returns for his third installment. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, the third game in the acclaimed Splinter Cell series, manages to improve the game’s visuals, make the gameplay a bit more nonlinear, and add some new gameplay modes to the already exhaustive Splinter Cell brand. Although the PlayStation 2 version of the game is still quite enjoyable, it is obviously a lesser version of a great game.

Auch Splinter Cell Chaos Theory bietet dem Spieler spannende Schleich-Action auf höchstem Niveau, wie man es von Sam Fisher kennt. Zwar mag der ein oder andere Spieler größere Innovationen vermissen, die wenigen Neuerungen wie die Geräuschanzeige sind aber allesamt sehr gut ins Spiel integriert. Man möchte sie nach kurzer Spielzeit nicht mehr missen. Technisch ist Sams dritter Ausflug ohnehin erstklassig und der neue kooperative Mehrspielermodus ist trotz kleiner Mängel sehr viel versprechend. Wer die Wahl hat sollte auf jeden Fall die grafisch opulente PC-Version kaufen, reine Konsolenzocker bevorzugen die Xbox-Fassung.

Kampf, Akrobatik, Spannung - als nach zwölf Stunden der Abspann lief, war die Welt gerettet. Ich habe gezittert und geschossen, bin geschlichen und geklettert. Und das alles bei perfekter Steuerung, in traumhafter Umgebung, begleitet von einer guten Story. Die kann zwar weder Sam Fisher noch anderen Charakteren echtes Profil geben und setzt für meinen Geschmack zu wenig dramatische Höhepunkte, aber sie wird glaubwürdig erzählt. Selbst als bekennender Solid Snake-Fan kann ich Sam Fisher und Ubisoft nur gratulieren. Vor allem der elegante Einsatz des Messers, der listige Störsender sowie das offene Leveldesign haben neuen Schwung ins altbekannte Spielerlebnis gebracht. Leider ist die künstliche Intelligenz ein zweischneidiges Schwert: Einerseits beobachtet man gutes Patrouille- und Suchverhalten, andererseits peinliche Inkonsequenzen bei der Geräuschwahrnehmung.

It's not often that a series not only improves visually, but also adds completely new elements with each installment. The original Splinter Cell introduced a new stealth action hero in the form of Sam Fisher. The game looked and played great, but what really stood out was the potential for a successful franchise. Pandora Tomorrow broke new ground by creating an online multiplayer stealth-action game. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory continues the trend with improved controls, graphics, a polished adversarial mode, and new co-op missions. Like the other games in the series, Chaos Theory will wow you with its visuals and technical bravado, but lacks the depth of the other high-end PS2 stealth-action game, Snake Eater.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory gives fans of the series everything they could possibly want. More single-player action, a new cooperative play mode, and new maps to an already very competent co-op mode. What this game lacks is the hardware power to back it up, thus resulting in the lackluster port the PS2 has received. Still, for a system that is nearly 5 years old, UbiSoft has managed to suck every single ounce of power dry to bring this to the PS2. Still, it can't hold a candle to it's Xbox and PC cousins.

As novidades podem ter mais mudado a mecânica do que evoluído a fórmula, mas quem apreciou os jogos anteriores tem motivo de sobra para voltar ao Third Echelon, o grupo para qual Sam Fisher trabalha.

When it was announced that a new, revolutionary Splinter Cell was going to be released approximately a year after its sequel, we were very skeptical. A year is usually just enough time to build some new levels, throw in some new dialogue and release basically the same game with a fancy, hip subtitle. From all the hype and advance demos, we expected a completely revamped single-player game and the same old Versus mode, plus a nifty little co-op feature. So when we discovered that the single-player game was more refined than revolutionary, we were a little crestfallen.

The design of Splinter Cell Chaos Theory's campaign fulfills a lot of the previously untapped potential of its predecessors' single-player portions, and the game's multiplayer options are certainly intriguing. On paper, it's got to be the most fully featured stealth action game to date, so if you like the idea of high-tech espionage, it's going to be appealing. The game's different ingredients do seem as if they were cobbled together, though, and Chaos Theory ultimately could have benefited from a greater sense of cohesion. And the many, many sacrifices made to the PlayStation 2 version of this game mean that it just can't be recommended in good conscience, despite being a good game if considered in a vacuum.
