Gripes aside, all in all, what we have here is another highly respectable update of the best and most playable simulation of the great game – but to be honest it’s unlikely to appeal to anyone other than snooker loopy nuts (like us), and needed even more of a tune up than it got.

Despite a few problems, World Snooker Championship 2005 is easily the best snooker title available for home consoles. Its control method is initially bewildering, but persevere and you will come to love a game that will eat away time and keep you entertained for months. It may not have the action found in a game of Pro Evo, but a black ball decider in a best of 5 match sure is gaming that all sports fans should experience.
World Snooker Championship 2005 is a fantastic simulation of the sport, and is likely to be the most accurate Snooker title that money will ever be able to buy. It may be too hardcore for all but the most passionate of fans, thanks to the tough AI players, which are controlled with an almost surgical precision. Regardless of this it's still a title loaded with options and one that is well worth the time that one must invest to become anything even close to decent.

As with most sports titles, WSC 2005 is an updated version of last year’s WSC 2004, and if you do own the previous version, then I’m not really sure that this year’s outing brings anything especially new to the table (sorry) for casual fans, but what it does offer is an entertaining snooker game with a variety of play modes. The multiplayer modes are fun if you have a few mates round and there are plenty of things to unlock in the single player games. If you are looking for a new snooker game (why else would you be reading this review) then you can’t really go wrong. If you’re just curious then WSC 2005 is about as good as you’re going to get on the PS2.

Personally the differences between the older Codemasters version and the new Sega version are not enough to warrant the extra price tag. If you’re starving for a game of Snooker we recommend you get the cheaper alternative which should be available at a discount when the 2005 hits retail. And if you already own that version we doubt you’ll see anything different to warrant splashing out on this.

Ultimately, World Snooker Championship 2005 aims to cater for fans of the sport and does so well. It may not be the fastest or most attractive game around, but in terms of accuracy and coverage of snooker, you won't find better. If you're looking for an accurate simulation of the game, look no further, but otherwise, your time will be better spent elsewhere.
