Original Gamer (Dec 28, 2008)
Games usually contain weak narratives because their stories are tacked onto pre-existing gameplay structures. Yakuza 2 conveys the impression that the opposite approach was adopted here. The brawling is fun and well-implemented with plenty of special combos and tough bosses to keep the beat-em-up gamer happy. The sandbox elements work well too, highly reminiscent of Shenmue's atmospheric rendition of Yokosuka's shops and restaurants, with mini-game opportunities throughout. But all these features have been woven around the true centerpiece of Yakuza 2: its narrative. The utterly regressive, unrelentingly linear, cutscene-driven, genre-derivative story that I swallowed hook, line, and sinker. The one I was genuinely sad to see end.
Worth Playing (Nov 21, 2008)
Still, even with a few more issues to iron out, Yakuza 2 is a fantastic sequel to an already great game. While not a whole lot has changed to make this one feel like a big revolution from the first, enough issues were fixed to make Yakuza 2 feel far more playable and complete when it comes to the gameplay, and while the story takes a small step back, it's definitely a far cry from being bad. This one is definitely worth checking out if you were a fan of the original and if you missed out on the first, you could pick it up along with this for less than the price of a next-gen title at this point. Definitely do so if you haven't already, and hopefully we'll get to see part three soon enough.
Thunderbolt Games (Nov 07, 2008)
To cut a long story short, Yakuza 2 is more than worth your attention. The writing is often sharp and witty, the cast of characters are wonderfully realised each with there own intricate back-story and the story is deep enough to throw off even the biggest of cynics. In addition to this, the decision to keep the original Japanese dubbing works wonders in keeping the story credible; especially after the somewhat hokey performances plaguing the original’s English dub. Even if you have yet to play the original there is still a high chance you will enjoy this, those of you who did however will relish every minute. Also owners of the 60GB PlayStation 3 please note that this is fully compatible with absolutely no problems at present and with that in mind, there is really no excuse not to catch up on this fantastic series.
3D Juegos (Sep 19, 2008)
IGN (Sep 11, 2008)
While Yakuza 2 isn't vastly improved or even all that different from the first game (that will likely happen when the PS3 continuation finally hits), but what it does offer is a fantastic story that is actually interesting, sports characters that you can grow to love or hate, and plenty of twists to keep all those disparate parts fresh. Go buy this game. Seriously. SEGA needs to be rewarded for cranking out an experience like this, and doing it on the anniversary of the Dreamcast's launch is just icing on the cake.
1UP (Sep 17, 2008)
It's a bit unfortunate that Yakuza 2 had such a bizarre detour on its way to hitting U.S. shelves, as many gamers' tastes have changed in the interim. Still, it's a damn good crime game that delivers satisfying combat, an entertaining glimpse into the Japanese criminal underworld, decent fan service for players who dug the first game, and a pretty awesome tiger-fight scene. If nothing else, it's solid, inexpensive prep work for the upcoming (we're hoping it's upcoming to the States, at least) Yakuza 3 for the PS3.

Yakuza 2 is undeniably more of the same of its predecessors with small tweaks and optimizations in its gameplay, but fans of the first game should be pleased with Yakuza 2’s new storyline and with how much extra content has been added.
Game Critics (Oct 21, 2008)
Yakuza 2 isn't perfect by a longshot, but it's one of the exceedingly few games that makes an effort to deliver legitimately mature content aimed at, and intended for adults like me who can appreciate something a little more substantial than killing terrorists, aliens, or zombies once in awhile. There's nothing wrong with that stuff of course, but with the entire spectrum of human experience to draw from, it's about time that developers start acknowledging that games can deliver experiences a little deeper than "pull trigger, go boom." Sometimes a few quiet moments between a man and a woman on a rooftop below the stars is all you need.
WildGames (Oct 27, 2008)

Yakuza 2 is another welcome addition to the PS2 library and despite being a little rough around the edges it still has enough to make it worthy of a purchase if you can drag yourself away from the so-called ‘next-gen’ gaming that is. Let’s hope this title doesn’t pass too many people by.

Sadly, this late in the day, it'll be tough for SEGA to tempt many next-gen gamers to experience a 'last-gen' title. But those savvy enough to see beyond Yakuza 2's slightly dated visuals will enjoy a richly rewarding openworld brawler - one that's every bit as immersive and entertaining as the original. Now go out there, buy it, and convince SEGA it's also worth releasing Yakuza 3 in the West...
Game Captain (Sep 24, 2008)

Yakuza 2 is just like its predecessor a fun game if you don't have problems with an overdose on movies, the strong influence of the Japanese culture and a very deep storyline with strong character development. No time was saved on the setting of the atmosphere and also the combat still shows a high intensity which makes it fun and exciting time after time. Add to that a ton of enormously violent attacks with skull fractures as result and you will gladly hit the game in your PS2. Yakuza 2 is just as part 1 certainly not made for the average gamer, but definitely worth a try when you get the chance.
GameSpy (Sep 22, 2008)
Despite its technical problems, Yakuza 2's story really kept us coming back for more. It's fantastically paced, constantly dropping teasers to keep you interested in what's going to happen next. In the end, it's a very similar game to its predecessor. If you're expecting major upgrades that improve on the original formula you'll probably be disappointed. On the other hand, if you've played the original and enjoyed your time with it, Yakuza 2 should be worth a shot.
Gamereactor (Sweden) (Oct 01, 2008)
