American McGee bedient zowel Alice-fans als action adventure-adepten opnieuw op hun wenken met een waanzinnig avontuur waar je, ondanks wat ruwe kantjes, graag het hoofd bij zal verliezen.

Alice: Madness Returns is definitely a tea party you’d be foolish to miss. The breathtaking design and imagery mixed with some exciting and fun platforming makes for a really solid gaming experience. Flaws poke up here and there and it’s not exactly game of the year material but it is an overall strong effort from the team at Spicy Horse. If you’re looking for a bit of a change of pace and something a little different than your standard shooter fare that is currently littering the market then maybe this is just the game for you.

Il faut bien avouer que Alice : Retour au Pays de la Folie nous a vraiment impressionnés même s'il n'est pas exempt de défauts. On ne peut par exemple pas s'empêcher de remarquer que la gestion des caméras est chaotique et que les textures sont parfois peu ragoûtantes. Ce détail a son importance mais il ne nous a finalement pas empêchés de profiter pleinement du jeu et de son univers atypique. Attendez-vous donc à retrouver pour l'occasion l'ambiance malsaine et déjantée qui faisait tout l'intérêt du premier American Mc Gee's Alice pour une aventure qui vous entraînera au plus profond de la psyché humaine.

If you're looking for a good 10 hour platformer, I can honestly say you’ll enjoy Alice: Madness Returns. The story alone will carry you through some of the more tedious combat sequences, or the needlessly complicated jumping puzzles. Just don't go in expecting the same level of crazy from it as you got from the first game. After your first 3 hours hunting for pig snouts and being attacked by Screwflys, you’ll realize this isn’t the same Wonderland Alice left behind.

Alice: Madness Returns was a fun game, especially if you have a knack for a little darkness or are just a fan of the first game. I personally due, so it was amusing to see that mixed with the developers art style, along with a classic fairytale that has its own kind of mystery to it alone. The weapons and environments truly could not have been more creative with a touch of humor. In terms of content, it really doesn’t get much better than this because even though there are only five stages, you’ll be at the game for at least 12 hours. On top of that with the original American McGee’s Alice included with every purchase you are essentially getting a whole other game. If you were a fan of the original or are just looking for something different, I would suggest you check out the game, because there is really nothing else like this on the market.

Leider haben sich in erster Linie die Grafiker von der Muse küssen lassen, denn vom Design abgesehen leidet das Spiel an ganz weltlichen Problemen, von denen die flackernden, ins Bild poppenden, teilweise scheußlich niedrig aufgelösten Texturen das geringste Problem sind. Viel schlimmer ist die Ideenlosigkeit, mit der man die höchst beeindruckende Spiellänge zu füllen versucht: Simple Geschicklichkeitstests, anspruchslose Kämpfe, keine dramaturgischen Höhepunkte, keine echte Entdeckung (auf jedes Geheimnis zeigt im Schrumpfmodus ein übergroßer Leuchtfinger), komplett lineare Welten - abgesehen von den durchgeknallten Designideen gibt es hier nicht viel zu entdecken. Das Konzept des Spiels ist damit weitaus faszinierender als das Spiel an sich; ein Problem, mit dem American McGee nicht zum ersten Mal zu kämpfen hat.

Alice Madness Returns is an accomplished platformer. It does what it does well, but it never quite fulfils its potential for greatness. The platforming is sturdy and the combat is solid, but the story, while intriguing, never quite captures your imagination and the odd difficulty spike is enough to render you as mad as a hatter. What you get is essentially the same game as ten years ago, only curiouser and curiouser. Initially captivating but ultimately nothing more than a flashy pack of cards, this second trip to Wonderland is only recommended for those with great amounts of determination and – more importantly – a sane mind.

Madness Returns does a lot of interesting things, and if it hadn’t tied itself to such a beloved property and had used original characters, this might be a very different review. But having set the bar high and falling short, it might be better for players just to go back and play the first game, or better yet, go back even further and just read the original books.

On en attendait monts et surtout merveilles, Alice 2 a de l'allure, mais pas assez. L'ambiance est là, brumeuse et malsaine, pour un cauchemar finalement assez conventionnel dans lequel on plonge sans se forcer, mais sans hâte. La faute au gameplay académique de ce petit délire exploité avec trop de redites, laissant l'ennui prendre le pas sur l'efficacité. On prend plaisir à découvrir les personnages du conte dans leur versions démembrées et purulentes, mais pas au point de faire l'impasse sur la réalisation datée. Dans le véritable monde d'Alice, Retour au pays de la folie serait un peu le lapin blanc : il attire le joueur vers le Pays des rêves, mais le lâche au bord du chemin, dès qu'il y a mis les pieds. Allez, il est temps de se réveiller.

Der er glimt af noget ganske foruroligende, når The Cheshire Cat fortæller om undertrykkelse, terror og bestialsk død med et udspilet Joker-agtigt smil fra øre til øre. Men desværre bevæger American McGee og Spicy House sig alt for sjældent videre ud af dén tangent. Alle optræk til det uventede aflives under børne- og familiespillets ensretning.
