Game Informer Magazine (May, 2009)
Many of the gamers I talk to have never played the original Xbox title Escape from Butcher Bay that anchors this value-packed release. With Dark Athena releasing on all high-powered consoles, there is absolutely no excuse not to play this incredible game.
GamePro (US) (Apr 07, 2009)
But when you step back and consider the entire package, you start to appreciate Dark Athena for what it truly is. Don't think of it as a full-blown sequel because, as Bill the Butcher Cutting said in Gangs of New York, 'that way lies damnation.' Instead, look at Dark Athena as a flawed yet enjoyable way to extend the thrill ride that is Escape from Butcher Bay. And that's not a bad thing at all.
Cheat Code Central (2009)
In the end, AODA is a great package well worth its asking price. Getting two excellent single-player campaigns as well as a sizeable online offering should please fans of the original game and newcomers alike. While there are some minor graphical issues that can be found throughout both games, they thankfully never adversely affect the gameplay. If you happened to miss EFBB the first time around, you shouldn't make this same mistake twice, especially since it now comes with the addition of another full new game and online multiplayer on the same disc.
In closing the remake they did on the original was absolutely amazing. It was great to not only play this game again, but this time run around in HD to boot. So getting both these games on one disc is great, you have your original and a sequel no need to wait 3 years for part two. The other thing that I didn't talk about is multiplayer, yes they did add it and the Pitch Black mode is nice but to be honest there are better multiplayer games out there. The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is a very solid game, with some excellent features, and a badass main character. For your hard earned sixty bucks you can't ask for a bigger package, two full games and multiplayer. I just hope that the sales from this game inspires them to complete The Chronicles of Riddick movie trilogy, because after seeing another side of this character in these games you will want to see more of him.
Vandal Online (Apr 27, 2009)
NZGamer (Apr 27, 2009)
Players looking for a pure stealth game will be disappointed, but everyone else will find in Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena a healthy mix of action, stealth and heavy weapon gameplay.
Gamer 2.0 (Apr 14, 2009)
With the economy on the ropes and gamers finding it harder to purchase game, you will not find a better deal than Assault on Dark Athena, which gives you two single player campaigns and a multiplayer component for one price. While the Dark Athena campaign struggles with its balancing and fighting mechanics, Butcher Bay is still as great as it ever was and with Pitch Black mode added to the multiplayer, there is sure to be something here for anyone to enjoy.
Play Magazine (Apr 09, 2009)
Never mind that Dark Athena doesn’t quite stand up to Butcher Bay. Why should it? As a package, this is an easy sell for someone looking for a moody experience of stealth, action and adventure. Nice to see a game that understands dialogue too.
GamingExcellence (Jul 06, 2009)
Escape from Butcher Bay is still the belle of the ball here; Dark Athena and the multiplayer don’t really even hold a candle to it. While all of the work that went into Dark Athena is appreciated it doesn’t change the fact that the pacing and level design in the original game far outshines that of anything that the expansion really brings to the table. This could be something of a shame but the whole package itself is definitely a worthwhile buy.
PSX Extreme (Jun 01, 2009)
Riddick is a fine first person shooter and I'm glad that throughout its troubles (losing Vivendi as a publisher after Activision's buyout), it found itself in the shelves of stores nationwide. There are a number of annoying problems with the game, but they aren't large enough for you to look away and not consider this purchase. With two adventures on one disc, both of which boast superb story telling, great audio, and nice visuals, The Chronicles of Riddick is a worthy purchase. The multiplayer may not be the most in-depth, but hey, at least it's there and there's some fun to be had with it.
Fragland.net (May 15, 2009)
Assault on Dark Athena is certainly a strong game but the big surprise we got from its predecessor is absent here. Still we get variation in gameplay and good action which bring an urge to keep playing. The voice-acting remains of equally high level and Vin Diesel puts down a strong performance as Riddick. The game has some downpoints but these never take the upper hand. Definitely one to check out thanks to getting both games for the price of one and for the Playstation fans it's finally their chance to meet Richard B. Riddick!
Gamereactor (Sweden) (Apr 14, 2009)
Pelaajalehti (Apr 02, 2009)
Vaikka itse Dark Athena osuus ei olekaan aivan yhtä hyvä, sekin on enemmän kuin pelattava toimintakokemus, joka laajentaa mukavasti alkuperäistä peliä. Kun yhden pelin hinnalla saa yhden erinomaisen ja yhden mukiinmenevän kokemuksen, miten voisin valittaa?
Impulse Gamer (2009)
The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault On Dark Athena is a well made action title. Though on it's own it falls short of the full Riddick experience. Having the Original Escape From Butcher Bay included makes for a nice book end experience. With everything in the package, The Chronicles Of Riddick Assault On Dark Athena is must have for any sci-fi gaming fan.
Eurogamer.pt (Apr 17, 2009)
PlayStation Universe (Apr 20, 2009)
When the entire package is examined, however, The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is one hell of a deal. On the disc there’s one fantastic game -- presented in shiny high definition graphics -- and another good, if somewhat similar adventure. It has a few faults here and there, but Dark Athena doesn’t disappoint.
GameDaily (Apr 01, 2009)
Dark Athena's linear gameplay, confusing mission objectives (we spent too much time wandering around) and simple AI (it either shoots or retreats), however, left us unimpressed. Developer Starbreeze attempted to add longevity with a multiplayer mode, but only the Pitch Black match type (one player is Riddick and the rest hunt him down) kept us entertained. Overall, however, both games offer plenty of action and the inclusion of Butcher Bay makes this a potential must buy, depending on how much you love the character.
videogamer.com (Apr 07, 2009)
With two great games that will take somewhere in the region of 15-20 hours to complete, superb presentation and a sense that you're playing something different to the norm, The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena comes highly recommended. If it weren't for a few unfortunate bugs and the odd strange design decision that score below this paragraph might even have been a notch higher.
Gameplanet (May 13, 2009)
If you, like us, look forward to each new video game that has you playing as some variation of the man stallion that is Vin Diesel, then The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, is worth a look, but it feels more like a cheap shine job than a sequel worthy of its predecessor.
UOL Jogos (Apr 07, 2009)
"The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena" não inova nada além do que já havia mostrado em 2004, e ainda assim indispensável, principalmente àqueles que não jogaram a versão original. O acréscimo da nova aventura e modo online aumentam a longevidade do título que passará, ao menos uma semana, na bandeja de seu console.
GameZone (Mar 31, 2009)
Assault on Dark Athena is a great deal for players, as it gives those PS3 owners who missed out on the phenomenal Escape from Butcher Bay the chance to check it out in HD, with a host of perks. However, based solely on the strength of these perks, it’s a bit harder to recommend for those who played through Riddick’s first console game.
Game Shark (Apr 17, 2009)
Even with the inconsistencies between the game modes, it's still hard not to recommend the game as Butcher Bay is so dang good. If you've never played the original game, it's well worth your time to pick it up and while Dark Athena doesn't compare, it's still fun—up to a point. If you played the original, well, it's worth your time too as you'd be surprised how much fun going back to Butcher Bay can be. If all you're interested in is the new content, both single and multiplayer, give this one a rental as unfortunately the new stuff can't hold a candle to the original content.
XGN (Apr 20, 2009)
InsideGamer (Apr 21, 2009)
The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is een mooi filmisch science fiction-avontuur.
TotalPlayStation (Jun 16, 2009)
It’s fun to feel like a ridiculous badass sometimes, and Riddick has it down to a thickheaded science.
IGN (Mar 31, 2009)
The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is a difficult game to judge. The first half of the game, Escape from Butcher Bay, certain shows its age, but is still an innovative game. The sequel, however, comes off as a poor imitation. It's far more frustrating and seems more shooter than anything else. It's not a terrible game for a sequel, but it's inferior to Butcher Bay. If you played the original back in 2004, then there's little reason to pick this game up. However, if you never played Riddick's first adventure it (and its modest follow-up) are worth checking out.
Games TM (Apr 16, 2009)
Nevertheless, the fact that it still entertains with a formula that's now almost five years old is achievement enough, and although we're examining Assault On Dark Athena as a singular product, we'd be doing it a great disservice if we did not mention the fact that it comes with the entirety of Escape From Butcher Bay - and that's nothing short of brilliant. Overall, you're getting two full games here, both involving and complex - if not a little dated - and well worth your money.
Thunderbolt Games (Jan 29, 2010)
Ultimately, The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is a decent overall package that succeeds more due to the remastering of quiet classic Butcher Bay than the somewhat disappointing more recent episode Dark Athena. For those who have yet to experience the game outings of Richard B. Riddick this is an enjoyable package which is definitely worth trying out, but for those who played through Escape from Butcher Bay last generation, it’s hard to recommend the same game yet again, along with its largely forgettable sequel.
Eurogamer.net (UK) (Apr 20, 2009)
It all adds up to just enough to be a recommended purchase, but one that comes with more caveats than fans will be comfortable with.
GameSpot (Apr 10, 2009)
The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is many things: an attractive rerelease of an amazing game, a mildly disappointing sequel, and a forgettable online experience. If you haven't played Butcher Bay, it's a must-play. If you have, be aware of the sequel's abundant shortcomings before making a purchase. Nevertheless, though the new content lets in far too much sunlight, those that crave the darkness will still find plenty of inky crevasses in which to lurk.
Armchair Empire, The (Jun 29, 2009)
Despite these flaws, Riddick’s story and setting work well enough that the outdated mechanics can be forgiven for experiencing a mature and intriguing experience that easily eclipses Vin Diesel’s biggest “blockbusters”. For players who missed out on the original Butcher Bay, now is the perfect opportunity to take part in the interstellar jailbreak and the following pirate raid making up its second half. Just don’t drop the soap…you never know who may be lurking in the shadows.
Game Positive (Apr 22, 2009)
In the end, you get a great game and a solid sequel in the same package. There is a lot to be said for that combination, and the multiplayer only adds to the overall value of this two-for-one deal. Escape from Butcher Bay is as good as it ever was, and the improved presentation makes is more approachable in a gaming generation of high definition displays. Assault on Dark Athena is a solid game in its own right, but is definitely not good enough to warrant a purchase on its own. The unique combination of gameplay elements in these two titles has not quite been replicated since, making this collection even more attractive. If you've never played Escape from Butcher Bay, this update is a must buy. However, if you're only after Assault on Dark Athena, a rental might be the smarter choice.
1UP (Apr 07, 2009)
Which brings us to the messy clarification of the score. As a product, this package is recommendable to anyone who hasn't experienced the first game, or wishes to add it back to their current library. It also includes a surprisingly fun multiplayer suite, with the Riddick vs. Everyone Else mode "Pitch Black" as the main attraction. But as single-player games, the unsatisfying Dark Athena should be played as a curiosity and then put back where it belongs: in Butcher Bay's shadow.
