The game will take you somewhere along 10-15 hours but there is reason to return to a new game in which you keep all your nodes and weapons and get a new super suit if you can afford it. Trophies will keep the perfectionists busy as they require more than a couple of play-throughs to earn that coveted platinum trophy. I for one cannot wait to see what other new IPs EA will throw at us over time and after seeing this game succeed I want to see what EA Redwood specifically will surprise us with. As it stands, if you are a fan of survival horror you owe it to yourself to experience this game.
GameSpy (Oct 14, 2008)
Dead Space is a solid realization of several of our favorite gameplay mechanics in a way that we've only seen in blockbusters like BioShock, Half-Life and Resident Evil 4. Its quality is undeniable and we have no reservation in recommending its potent mix of panic-inducing plotline, furious action and deep customization.
Lawrence (Oct 24, 2008)
I've never been huge on the survival horror genre. The (pre-RE4) Resident Evil games had great jump-out-of-your-seat scares, but suffered from some wooden controls. Silent Hill had a great psychological uneasiness about it, but the gameplay wasn't quite up to par. Dead Space may borrow heavily from various inspirations, but it puts everything together in a fantastic, terrifying package. It easily stands up to the likes of Resident Evil 4 and Bioshock, and I can only hope we'll have many sequels to come.
GamingExcellence (Nov 13, 2008)
Dead Space is a scary, intense, engrossing, and invigorating adventure into the heart of deep space. EA Redwood has produced EA’s finest title in years and their best original IP since the glory days of Road Rash and Desert Strike on the Sega Genesis. Just don’t hold it against EA for not including an extra pair of boxer shorts in the box. They had to draw the line somewhere. Now if only we could do something about that bitchy Karma.
PSX Extreme (Oct 19, 2008)
You could argue that Dead Space is perhaps the biggest sleeper hit of the year. While yes it is from a high profile publisher, it was also underestimated by many and few expected such a blockbuster hit. Boasting splendid atmosphere that is superbly woven by the audio, visuals, and the gameplay, Dead Space is also the scariest, most tense game to come out in a long time. If you're looking for an amazing survival horror game, then look no further - Dead Space is your ticket.
Cheat Code Central (Oct, 2008)
Dead Space is a masterful title that is sure to scare the crap out of you. Plus, there are three modes of difficulty, so this is an experience that casual and hardcore gamers alike simply cannot miss. This is a highly polished and well-crafted title that transcends standard video gaming. Simply put, it is one of the best games I've ever played.
PGNx Media (Oct 13, 2008)
Dead Space shows the beginnings of a very strong franchise. EA Redwood Shores nailed the genre with Dead Space. On one hand, you have a very violent and gory game with tons of action. On the other, you have a fulfilling and well-told story with plenty of plot twists. Holding them together is a superb atmosphere that truly immerses you into this world. Essentially, you’re looking at a must-have.
Dead Space is technically a survival horror game but it should really be compared to motion picture juggernauts The Thing and Aliens, as it channels the essence of those films more than it does any other game. If horror is your forte, dim the lights, crank up the surround sound, and take the deepest breath you ever have. I think you'll agree, no game has ever been this frightening.
The Video Game Critic (Oct 25, 2009)
Dead Space is an ambitious effort - but sometimes it feels too ambitious. The "zero gravity" areas absolutely suck. While freely floating through a chamber is original in concept, the clumsy controls and bewildering camera angles make it feel like an ordeal. In general, Dead Space's controls are complicated as hell, with many critical functions mapped to combinations of shoulder and face buttons (L1 and X to reload, for example). Dead Space isn't perfect but it's one of the most intense shooters I've played in quite a while. I dare you to turn out the lights as you play this one.
Gamers.at (Nov 12, 2008)
PlayStation Universe (Nov 02, 2008)
Dead Space is a thrilling scarefest filled with nightmarish creatures, gory detail, and the ability to make any gamer wish it was the daytime. Redwood Shores has delivered a truly must-buy title during a month of standout releases.
GamesRadar (Oct 14, 2008)
The very fact that we wish Dead Space included more of its original features and less content pulled from the last generation’s greatest game speaks volumes for the quality on show. By rigidly copying Resident Evil’s model and only ever daring to step outside the template a handful of times Dead Space isn’t quite as accomplished as Capcom’s classic, but its quest to reach for the stars should still be viewed as proof that EA’s recent ambition to produce new IP’s is the company’s greatest decision in years. Isaac almost stands shoulder to shoulder with Leon Kennedy and Chris Redfield; slightly singed and worse for wear, we admit, but among such lofty company second place is nothing to be ashamed of.
GameLemon (Mar 26, 2009)
Dead Space is not exactly revolutionary. What it is, however, is a clever, beautiful, and exciting game. And above all, it's a hell of a blast to play. I think it's worth mentioning that there had been numerous times on my first playthrough where I thought, "Okay, if this was your average game, such-and-such is bound to happen right about now. So let the zombie face-pouncing commence." And the game proved me wrong almost every single time. Revolutionary or not, it's most definitely not your average game, and everything it tries to do it does exactly right, without having to rely on cheap tricks to make things work.
Video Game Talk (Oct 31, 2008)
Concentrated adrenaline comes whisked together with intricate level design and haunting atmosphere in Dead Space, which will probably pop up on many a Game of the Year list later this year. But, much like a lot of horror movies being released nowadays, it succeeds based off of influence instead of ingenuity; instead of feeling truly distinct, it takes that work in the genre and exploits every ounce of it in a way that unnerves and rattles the horror-survival genre's nerves to new levels. Dead Space doesn't redesign the wheel to operate any different, but boy does it make it fire down the row with gasp-worthy speed. Plunging into the Ishimura, weaving through space's varied environmental challenges, and emptying clip after clip of pulse / plasma charges on some of the more impressively chilling enemy models yet of this generation makes Dead Space a Highly Recommended experience worth enduring -- at least once.
Thunderbolt Games (Nov 15, 2008)
And Dead Space isn’t a bad way to start a new IP. It creates a creepy, disturbing atmosphere that is often unnerving, and combines that with a deep and engaging combat system that is simply one of a kind. Dead Space may have floated under your radar, but it should be in plain sight by now; it’s one of the best survival horrors in years and looks set to become a prominent figure in video gaming in the years to come.
GameZone (Nov 14, 2008)
Dead Space is a top notch action game that will undoubtedly keep you at the edge of your seat. It’s highly recommended for anyone who enjoys a good scare followed by a lot of gunfire.
Peliplaneetta.net (Nov 05, 2008)
GameSpot (Oct 31, 2008)
Dead Space is a remarkable game from a well-tread genre that manages to stand out from its competitors in almost every way, from visual presentation to engaging story, innovative combat mechanics to fright factor. Whether you're looking for a terrifying horror experience or a deeply story-driven adventure that will keep you engaged for 15-20 hours, Dead Space is a fantastic game that you should not pass on.
Play.tm (Oct 29, 2008)
It may not have that many genuinely new ideas but Dead Space is still a thing of beauty. It has successfully taken all the best bits from the survival horror genre, perfected them, and mixed them in with a whole array of Hollywood influences to create an experience that's still completely it's own. Put it on your Christmas list now, you won't regret it.
Game Over Online (Oct 23, 2008)
Go figure. In an effort by EA to diversify their portfolio with fewer sequels and more original intellectual properties, Dead Space is conceived, a sci-fi survival horror game that will undoubtedly spawn one or more sequels of its own. The story, while clichéd, is still gripping, the atmosphere is unnerving, the gameplay is exciting, and the sound design and art direction are brilliant. If you’re a fan of science fiction or horror, you owe it to yourself to have Dead Space in your collection.
Fragland.net (Nov 11, 2008)
In the end, EA proves that they can easily compete in the survival horror genre and in some aspect they have mildly reinvented the genre. I think Dead Space could turn out to become a new successful franchise, offering enough quality to even compete against Resident Evil 5. I must say, Resident Evil 4 is a bit better than Dead Space, but EA did a fine job in bringing a fair amount of gore and scary moments. I personally found Dead Space a lot scarier than Resident Evil 4, and of course that's a great compliment. Dead Space combines the sci-fi environments of Metroid Prime with the horror of famous alien movies and some of the gameplay of Resident Evil 4 without the camp of Capcom's survival-horror classic. Maybe it's no classic, but I do recommend it.
The harrowing combat and disturbing story are the real stars, weaving an eerie ambiance that will keep Dead Space lurking in the dark corners of your mind long after you turn the lights back on.
IGN (Oct 10, 2008)
Call it science fiction survival horror, but Dead Space does the genre proud with an engaging story; action that's tense, fast-paced and extremely violent; as well as atmospheric qualities that will get under your skin and make you jump. It may be a newcomer, but the seeds of an incredible franchise have been sown, and EA's in a great position to reap a phenomenal franchise full of scares. If you like survival horror, action or sci-fi, Dead Space needs to be on your radar.
Regardless of its pitfalls, Dead Space is worthy of your attention if you haven't played the game yet. With the sequel approaching rapidly, revisiting Dead Space would be time well spent. It's an excellent entry into the survival horror genre and should not be missed. Just don't do like I did and spend hours trying to convince yourself to move around the corner up ahead.
Game Positive (Nov 06, 2008)
At the end of the day, Dead Space is an exciting new entry into the word of survival horror. While its recycled enemies and repeating mission objectives are obvious downfalls, they aren't enough to keep you from getting completely wrapped up in the universe. The innovative HUD display, enemy dismemberment system, and tool-like weapons are all elements that help add to the amazing atmosphere created within the game. Dead Space may not offer the definitive horror experience, but it is an intense and brutal sci-fi thrill ride that will please fans of both the survival horror and action genres.
1UP (Oct 13, 2008)
Dead Space ultimately feels like an incredibly polished and varied 6-hour game stretched out to make it twice that long. While I felt like I was repeating the same objectives a few too many times, the combat held up so well that I didn't even mind...too much.
Worth Playing (Oct 22, 2008)
Dead Space is basically what one would get if one took System Shock 2 and pureed it into a blender with Resident Evil 4. That's not a bad combination at all, and Dead Space turns out to be a fun game. The combat is fast and frantic, the interface excellent, the controls responsive, and it provides an overall satisfying experience. While it's fun, though, there isn't much that's memorable about Dead Space. It feels like patchwork that's been slapped together from other franchises, and it lacks a spirit of its own to make it stand out from the pack. Dead Space is inarguably worth a rental, but the short length and lack of replay value make it a worthwhile purchase for those who love the gameplay.
PlayStation Lifestyle (Oct 28, 2008)
Overall, Dead Space is a very polished game. This game should be in the collection of any PlayStation 3 owner. While there are a few minor faults, there isn’t anything that really can’t be overlooked by someone looking to have an excellent third person sci-fi survival horror game in the library.
DarkZero (Nov 03, 2008)
Dead Space is welcomed with open arms here and to think EA have brought this a long is a nice surprise. Another thing we know is that EA love sequels and we can expect to see Dead Space 2 next year or at some point in the future. I sit here waiting to see what they do because this franchise can really be created into something memorable.
videogamer.com (Oct 13, 2008)
On the whole though, Dead Space is a superb survival horror romp that's guaranteed to scare. If you like Resident Evil 4, you should definitely go out and buy this game right now. It's clearly set up for a sequel, and we can't wait. For now though, we'll leave you with the obligatory 'best played alone and with the lights off' advice. Go on. You're not chicken are you?
Eurogamer.net (UK) (Oct 13, 2008)
None of these criticisms will detract from your enjoyment, provided all you want from a game is the opportunity to repeatedly turn evil monsters into red mush in gorgeous HD detail. Dead Space easily delivers on that promise, but fails to turn its polished production values into something truly memorable over the long haul.
And that's really what Dead Space boils down to. It's competent, but generic. To answer the question I posed at the beginning of this review as to whether the game has enough originality to make it stand out amongst the crowd, the truth is it does, but not very often. When it sticks to its more original ideas; the zero-g environments, the severing of limbs with unique weapons, the lack of ammo, etc. it works very well. But it doesn’t capitalize on these innovations as it should. It plays things too safe, resorting to repeating the same shootouts in the same corridors that would feel at home in any number of shooters. It’s too afraid to really take any risks, like adding more zero-g environments, or cutting the game length in half (keeping all the good bits and doing away with the filler). There's still a pretty good action game at its core, but don't be surprised if the last few hours bear more than a passing resemblance to the first.
