DeathSpank combines a hilarious script with decent gameplay to weave a short but pleasing action RPG.
AusGamers (Jul 22, 2010)
Instead of being a Diablo or 'insert action/RPG name here' clone, Deathspank stands as an awesome and humorous romp with plenty of great NPCs who all have a lot say. It offers all the weaponry, spells and items you would expect plus so much more, along with a great sense of exploration and wonder in a fully realised fantasy game-world. Sure the side-quests follow a similar formula to what we may have experienced before, but it's a small issue in an otherwise flawless gaming experience. As the Wise Cow would say ".............."

As a single-player game, though, DeathSpank really shines. The addictive nature of leveling up and looting treasure chests and fallen enemies is here in spades, not to be missed by fans of the genre. It’s also one of the better-looking and most polished titles in the digital space, it’s also one of the meatiest -- there’s easily hours worth of play time here, more than many retail titles, all for $14.99. So what are you waiting for? Arm your “Demon Poop Hammer,” there’s feces that need collecting.

If you like sweet loot, hacking things to death, looking at beautiful landscapes and laughing at good writing, you might want to pick up DeathSpank. However, although the game shines in many areas, it does have its flaws. Questing can turn into a noticeable chore, and I would have gladly substituted some of the “go fetch” missions in favor of some more brainteasers. Still, DeathSpank is a fun adventure worth exploring.

I enjoyed spending time with this vacuous chin-faced hero far more than the snarling dragon-slayers who usually front RPGs. With a tasty smorgasbord of influences, fun conversation, and loads of clever gameplay touches, this is a spellbinding little fantasy adventure - all at a price (£9.99) that won't clear out your coin purse.

Overall DeathSpank is a fun little game that should take you about 8 or so hours to complete. The script is fun, and it offers up a lot of customisation. Unfortunately the constant questing and slaying can get a bit tedious in the long run. Thankfully the steady influx of new weapons and armour helps break up the tedium somewhat, but more varied quests and more puzzle elements would be welcome. There are worse things you can spend $15 on, and DeathSpank is well worth the time and money spent.

Which is a small example of something that speaks for DeathSpank overall. Despite my litany of annoyances earlier, I really like playing it simply because it's so refreshing. Purely as an action-RPG, it's a competent game with a few significant flaws in the name of simplicity/accessibility, but as an experience, it shines with humor and wit all over, and makes me hopeful for an improved sequel.

DeathSpank can be very charming, but it's rarely much more than that.
