The MMO and RPG veins are evident, and cannot be completely disregarded in favor of straight action. There is a good amount of "management" to be done if you want to be an efficient character. Gameplay is basic, but not in a devastating way. The few Matchmaking options offer a retreat from the norm and could be valuable to the title's longevity. The worst part of the experience is the inconsistent presentation. But as I said, in the current state of gaming hardware, to hold an MMO to the same presentation and gameplay standards as "less expansive" triple-A stuff is just setting yourself up for an unattainable standard. Defiance is far from perfect. But it gets enough stuff right, that fans of action RPGs should find solace and have a really good time on this sci-fi excursion.

Defiance is a persistent experience, which means it’s also a persistently changing experience. What we see now could be drastically different even a few months from now, so keep that in mind. For the time being, Defiance has started off on a relatively good note. The depth and longevity will undoubtedly cater to the MMO aficionados, the speed of the action-oriented TPS gameplay will interest some of the shooter fans, and sci-fi followers will definitely like the style and ambiance. There are several clear issues that plague an otherwise enjoyable experience, and microtransactions could be almost required in due time, but much of the drawbacks can be addressed in future patches. And I do expect the game to be well supported.

PlayStation Lifestyle (Apr 10, 2013)
Overall, Defiance is well worth the base price for players looking to find a great third-person shooter with a good deal of ever-evolving content. While it is far from perfect in its current condition, and the possibility for it to improve is a great incentive, the reality of it as it now stands is that it still is a very competent game that fans of the genre should check out—so long as they understand from the beginning that patches, updates, server downtime, lag and/or general internet problems are going to be an issue periodically through its life. These issues are commonplace with MMOs, so PC gamers are used to such problems, but with MMOs being relatively new to consoles, this is something to keep in mind if considering making a Defiance a purchase.

The successes of Defiance are quickly overshadowed by its flaws. Trion Worlds promises that Defiance will continue to evolve and improve. I hope so: beneath the muck is a game that deserves better.

This is a whole new IP, tied into a promising TV show, trying to bring an exciting, novel kind of gameplay to a mass audience. It’s a game you want to see succeed, and a game you want to want to play. One can hope that coming patches will add more to the game and give players something to look forward to. Until then? Well, if you’re patient, there’s plenty here to kill--time included.

Menus taking many long seconds before the screen populates with any information. Mission progress lost and weapons gone missing. Frequent server downtimes. Delayed or failed attempts to break down your items into resources. These are some of the obstacles you must circumvent to enjoy Defiance to its fullest, and even then, nothing Defiance does is best in class. Yet it has that special spark that ignites the desire to press forward. Defiance's merely acceptable systems are deftly assembled in a way that allows you to spread your proverbial wings and offer your gun-wielding talents to those who need you most. Much like its own arkfalls, Defiance offers treasure, but you have to battle an array of bugs before you can reap it.

As a huge science-fiction nerd and a fan of shooters, I went in really wanting to like Defiance and its new universe. Thing is, it’s just not very good. Rare well-designed quests are overshadowed by a host of others that feel phoned in, and though the fundamentals of shooting are competent, weak enemy AI makes the PvE combat a bore. Respectable PvP combat goes a long way, but especially when the major performance issues rear their ugly head, it's not far enough to make Defiance a recommendable experience.

If you're really looking to play a sci-fi shooter, there are worse choices out there, but you'll probably want to hold off to see if you like Defiance the TV series before jumping into Defiance the game.

Online connection is required so if you lack that you’ll lack any chance of playing. But is that really a bad thing? While it has some minor redeeming qualities Defiance is just too bland and unoriginal to recommend. If you’re done with Borderlands and want more this might interest you, but it’s a step down. A really, really big step down.

You certainly can’t fault Defiance for lack of content, then. Sadly, what you can fault it for is being an ugly, buggy and monotonous shooter with a tenuous link to a mediocre sci-fi TV drama.
