So perhaps the real appeal of Epic Mickey 2 lies in the occasional scribbles in the margins rather than the main tale. This is very much a game that Warren Spector wanted to make, not the game his fans wanted him to make; the real fun comes from soaking in the contents of the man’s mind, the ideas that govern the world he has created and the ways Disney memorabilia have come together into something grand, rather than from the simple experience of playing through it. It may not be Spector’s greatest game, but in some ways it feels like his most personal.

Despite the odd frustration, Epic Mickey 2 is a brave platformer. It’s intelligent, full of humour and, in typical Disney style, the cut-scenes are musical. Like the theme parks, environments are rich, and characters are OTT and full of enthusiasm. It’s an enjoyable journey through the past century of Disney, and despite the pitfalls there are some beautifully created levels and moments of pure magic. Plus, where else can you unlock a door by bringing together Snow White and her Prince for true love’s kiss?

Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two er en håndsrekning til Disney-fans, men vil være god plattformmoro for mange. Har du ikke PlayStation Move? Fortvil ikke. Du vil helt fint kunne spille uten.

Game Over Online (Nov 26, 2012)
Epic Mickey 2 leaves me feeling conflicted because it remedies the original’s control issues to some degree and does something new with co-op that alternates between being very helpful and annoying, depending on how the AI is when playing solo and is hurt by distracting viewpoints when using it with another person. As a result, Epic Mickey 2 feels like only a partial step forward instead of the huge one it could have been if everything worked perfectly. It’s still worth playing if you liked the first, but not something I’d recommend as a full-price buy. Given that it’s been going for $15-$20 during holiday sales, it’s hard to recommend renting it when you can buy it for so little, and it’s easily worth that price.

In the end, Disney’s Epic Mickey 2: The Power Of Two is not a bad game per se but it's also not a great arcade experience. The game itself feels a little too Wii-like in not just the presentation but also the way it has been programmed on the PS3. It just doesn't feel complete. Not being negative, there are still some great moments in the game and exploring the strange stages of The Wasteland is a joy. Unfortunately the frustrations of the game, especially when it comes to your AI component and the controls does become a chore in the end.

Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two is better than the first game, but it still needs work to perfect the gameplay mechanics that hinder it. At the end of the day, kids will love this game, but maybe not hardcore gamers.

If you’re a Disney fan, there’s still much joy to be gleaned out of Epic Mickey 2, but those expecting anything outside of its nostalgic heart should, sadly, look elsewhere.

Despite the best efforts of all involved to try to avoid the pitfalls of the original, Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two still is still guilty of some of the offences of old, but it's as stylish and creative a platformer as you are ever likely play. Nobody can fault the developers for their ambition, and it's abundantly clear everyone on board had love and respect for the source material. Perhaps the third time around they'll perfect the formula.

Attractive visuals only carry the game so far. Just when I finished one infuriating, monotonous boss fight I’d get thrown into another directionless, obtuse puzzle room. The discrete sections connect into an unbroken string of frustrating gameplay. I’m genuinely sad that a game rooted in the joy of Disney failed to evoke any in me, but Epic Mickey 2 is so disjointed and rambling, I was ready to escape Wasteland when the time came.

The Power of Two falters in all of the most important places, destroying its enormous potential. The musical story and reverential adaptation of classic Disney do an outstanding job of investing you in Mickey's struggles, but the act of playing continually destroys that sense of wonder. It's disappointing that so many of the same problems that haunted the original Epic Mickey are present in the sequel. It's simply not worth suffering through hours of punishing game design to discover the occasional moments of nostalgic joy. Sadly, The Power of Two is another failed attempt at revitalizing Mickey's career.

Functionally broken AI and awful navigation tools makes Epic Mickey 2 a poor experience all around, and worth avoiding for all but the most die-hard of Disney fans, and even they might feel betrayed. The first Epic Mickey was a whimsical, flawed trek through Disney nostalgia. But whereas the original’s novelty kept it interesting enough for fans to justify overlooking the flaws, the sequel carries with it no such charm. Instead, Power of Two is both less whimsical and more flawed, disappointing anyone who had hopes that this sequel would hit all of the notes its predecessor missed.

The Power Of Two may have fewer technical issues than its predecessor, but it’s a less adventurous, less courageous, and overall less interesting game. It struggles to make you care about its world, and as a result its one big idea – that of the Wasteland reacting to your choices – feels decidedly flaccid. There may still be mileage in Spector’s concept, but his team seems further than ever from realising it. Perhaps, as when Walt left Oswald behind to create his helium-voiced replacement, it’s time for Disney to go back to the drawing board.

It’s hard to work out what sort of audience would enjoy this title - it manages to be both babyish and overly complicated at the same time, and so incredibly frustrating, because most of the time, what you are supposed to be doing isn’t actually obvious. Puzzles and challenges in games, and that feeling of exhilaration you get when you finally figure them out, are generally supposed to be rewarding. But in Epic Mickey 2, when you finally figure out what it was you were supposed to be doing, you just want to slap your forehead, because it just feels like another pointless hurdle.
