Faery: Legends of Avalon will only appeal to a certain niche group, but if you’re in that group, you’ve been in it for a while. It doesn’t excel in all areas and actually disappoints in others but it’s still a lengthy, turn-based fantasy RPG that has it where it counts, especially where fans of the genre are concerned. And I think that’s important to note for a lot of our readers.

Overall I’m finding it difficult to assign a score to Faery: Legends of Avalon because for every good point there is a bad. It’s definitely an opinion splitter, and some will absolutely love it and forgive its problems, whilst others will pick it to pieces in a matter of minutes. Personally I enjoyed the story and could live with its old school origins, add in the fact it’s a rather lengthy affair for a downloadable title and you have something that is worth playing. If TSA did half points it would get a solid seven and a half.

Faery is a solid fantasy role-playing game, but the short tale means it’s not quite worth the $15 price tag. As part of an episodic endeavor, the first installment naturally leaves you feeling like the story is unresolved, but it’s great fun to fly around interesting backdrops. The massive character customization also makes your faery or elf feel unique, so if you enjoy leveling up and finding loot, you should check out Faery: Legends of Avalon.

Faery: Legends of Avalon is an average game that will provide a bit of entertainment but ultimately lacks any real pizazz to make it stand out in any categories. Not having voiceovers in a game these days is very jarring - it's not like there are thousands of lines of dialogue. The visuals are pretty nice though and you could consider this a "RPG-lite" for youngsters perhaps.

Legends of Avalon is a solid bargain bin RPG that’s worth a try if you’re at all interested in RPGs or Faeries. The graphics are good-looking for the most part. I did experience some slowdown at points, and some of the ghost ship world was simply too dark, but overall I had a nice time touring the varied worlds. The music tracks are solid, if a bit repetitive. The combat is turn-based and feels as dated as ever. Some of the magic spells look cool, but besides for that you’re not going to be blown away by the many encounters. If you’re looking for an RPG that you can sink 10+ hours into, Faery is a legitimate candidate. At $15 it’s not a bad buy, but if you can find it for any less then you might as well strap on your wings and give it a fly.

So you’ve got a basic turn-based RPG with a finely-detailed fantasy setting. The music is pleasing, and the art style is impressive. But with a weak story, bland fetch quests comprising the majority of your campaign, and absolutely no voiceover work whatsoever, this game is hard to recommend to anyone but fans of this genre of games. There’s nothing terrible about Faery: Legends of Avalon, it’s just that there’s nothing that makes the game stand out from all the countless RPGs before it.

How utterly average-sounding can you get, huh? With a little sprucing up, perhaps some voice-acting and some real, game-changing decisions to make, Faery: Legends of Avalon could have been a hidden gem. Instead, it's the kind of RPG that developers try their best not to create.

If you fancy the idea of an RPG-lite Brothers Grimm tribute act, then go right ahead. But if you can tolerate more than half an hour without wanting to eat your own earwax, you'll be doing better than I.
