It's the mind-numbing boredom that kills the game for you in the end, when you realise there's nothing really to do but slay hundreds of cute and not-so cute critters in the game, it becomes a grind and even the humour wears thin after a while. You can have thousands of weapons, but if you don't have something to spend and things up upgrade it very quickly becomes a tiresome hackathon. Might be worth a rent.
GamingLives (Dec 28, 2009)
Full of character and colour, this game, despite being a great concept with a dose of dark humour, doesn’t quite make the ‘better than average’ ground that it perhaps should have, thanks to a myriad of problems and an unforgiveable list of glitches. Flaws aside, until it gets the patch it so desperately needs, Fairytale Fights certainly won’t have a happily ever after and that’s a real shame.
Game Informer Magazine (Oct 27, 2009)
These are only my major qualms. If the above issues didn’t deliver the killing blow, a plethora of smaller misgivings laid Fairytale Fights to rest. In my playtime I saw loot continuously spawn off cliffs or disappear too quickly to pick up. Additionally, most levels boast tricky environmental hazards, such as bobbing saw blades. I met my demise several times passing by, only to find myself spawning under that very same blade. I eventually escaped thanks to a forgiving respawn, but only after a string of deaths robbed me of all my accumulated wealth. Top off the list with repetitive and uninspired boss battles, an off-kilter depth of field and a one-dimensional economy, and Fairytale Fights is offensive, just not in the way Playlogic intended.
Cynamite (Nov 21, 2009)

Thunderbolt Games (Nov 28, 2009)
FairyTale Fights is a likeable game with a fun style and surprisingly dark sense of humour, but it’s let down by simplistic level design, a lack of substance and undeveloped combat. The co-op modes are sincerely welcome and the bare bones of a good hack-and-slash are here, and there are some nice physics and comical little touches going on. However, at the end o the day the gameplay is spread a little too thin to really stand out in what is quite a crowded sub-genre.
PSX Extreme (Nov 03, 2009)
Overall, while we’re supposed to be having ceaseless fun slashing our way through a crazy wonderland, we’re continually frustrated and instead of reveling in the charming bloodshed, we’re just frowning at the screen. In other words, Playlogic falls well short of their goal, and that’s unfortunate. Something like this could’ve been a guilty pleasure for everyone and in all honesty, if they had just tightened up the control, put a bit more thought into the levels, and overhauled the combat mechanic (and get rid of the right analog), this game could’ve easily hit the mark.
3D Juegos (Oct 22, 2009)
Fairytale Fights is a good example of a fantastic concept poorly executed. All of the visuals and presentation seem in place, but the monotonous gameplay and boring combat really drag down the overall experience. If this was released as a straight-up downloadable game or even a budget-priced disc title I would not be as quick to dismiss it, but at $60 it is hard to recommend outside of a weekend rental. I expect the game to drop in price fairly quickly and when it does it will be a steal, until then I will have to chalk it up to another great idea fumbled at the goal line.
AceGamez (Oct 23, 2009)
Fairytale Fights isn’t a terrible game, it’s just a repetitious one made all the more maddening thanks to huge list of missed opportunities. It would have been easier to disregard Fairytale Fights if the game was just bad, but with underdeveloped, but clearly promising ideas constantly waved in our faces, it makes the disappointment of the final product that much harder to swallow – If only the weapons had felt more varied. If only the locations and enemies weren’t so repetitive. If only the hub world was more interactive. If only. If only. If only.
IGN (Oct 28, 2009)
Fairytale Fights is simply boring. The combat mechanics do nothing interesting, the level design actually has copy-and-pasted segments and, even though there's plenty of gore, the camera is pulled back so far that you can't see much. Unless you're really hard up for some cartoon violence, then don't bother.

That more or less sums up Fairytale Fights. It's nice to look at it and is amusing for a short while, but as soon as the presentation gloss wears off you're left with a dull hack 'n' slash that makes use of an overly simplistic control system. Without the substance to go with the game's amusingly twisted appearance, Fairytale Fights never really gets past the opening chapter.
All in all, nothing can save this game. There might be a small bunch of people who can make the best out of it, but it truly isn't a worthwhile experience, especially at its outrageous full retail price. Despite its good overall potential, large amount of long and short range weapons, and the many unbelievable promises, the linearity of the levels, lackluster storytelling, redundant and unpleasant action gameplay, unsophisticated and unpolished controls, and lack of the promised gore turned Fairytale Fights into a nightmarish yarn you should probably avoid.

Game Shark (Nov 13, 2009)
As a hack-and-slash platformer, Fairytale Fights could have been a success. On top of a consistent and admittedly appealing theme, it has all the right ingredients to fit the genre: countless weapons, challenging levels and 4-player co-op. But with repetitive gameplay and unrewarding challenges, this title falls very, very short of becoming the next Castle Crashers.
40 (UK) (Oct 22, 2009)
It's telling that Fairytale Fights attracted a lot of attention in the office. Grabbed by the garish colour scheme and arresting art, three or four people sat down for co-op. None of them lasted 10 minutes, and nobody came back. There are clearly some talented people at Playlogic - notably whoever did the endearing cut-scenes, which play out like Hanna-Barbera doing The Matrix. How something so colourful and quirky became so bland is a mystery of the creative process.
Boomtown (Nov 06, 2009)
You may imagine that this is supposed to be a kid’s game but the gore levels have earned it a 16 PEGI rating. Maybe hardcore platform fans or people who like monotonous beat ‘em up gameplay will enjoy this. I’m struggling to see a potential audience. The design is antiquated and badly implemented and the bugs should have been fixed before release. In fairytale terms this game is a poisoned apple and if it doesn’t kill you it will probably put you to sleep.
Gamernode (Nov 06, 2009)
Fairytale Fights is built upon an interesting premise with great potential, but sprouts something far inferior to a magical beanstalk. While it can be briefly enjoyable and provide a few giggles and chuckles, it quickly becomes repetitive and boring. Cooperative play helps, but in the end, the poor controls and lack of genuinely entertaining qualities will drive most players away.

GameSpot (Nov 03, 2009)
Even if it were a downloadable game for a fraction of the price, Fairytale Fights would not be recommendable. The very idea of this shallow, repetitive, bloated, excruciating adventure as a full-priced retail offering is nothing short of ludicrous. If there's any moral to be gleaned from this demented fairy tale, it is this: Don't play this game.
The Game Hoard (May 12, 2019)
Besides the brief thrill at seeing fairy tale characters getting sliced into bloody chunks, Fairytale Fights does not have much to offer. Its combat relies on a system that makes most every weapon feel the same despite the efforts in visual variety, with the only ones that break away from it too limited to justify using. Enemies are mostly fodder despite their different appearances as well, but the easily won fights are more tolerable than the drawn out conflicts with boring bosses. Very briefly a new hazard or a level concept might pull you out of the mindless repetition, but sadly, this is a hack and slash whose concept can’t salvage it from a brainless battle system that grows stale before the first stage is complete.
Game Revolution (Nov 12, 2009)
I've strained my brain for something good to say about Fairytale Fights, but I don't have anything. It's ugly; it's slippery; all of the enemies blend together because they're all the frickin' same... it's awe-inspiringly bad, really. Not since Superman 64 have I played something this stomach-wrenching, and at least in the end that was funny-horrible.
