Folklore is the type of game that grabs you from the first moment and refuses to let go. It's original story, mood-setting graphics and music, and creative controls create a game that simply must be experienced. Truly, the game's only fault is the repetitive nature of playing each level twice through. If only this had been fixed, this may have been a perfect game. As it stands however, anyone with a fondness for action-RPGs or a good murder mystery should pick up this title. Do your part to help keep Folklore from becoming another gem lost in a sea of mediocre "blockbusters" and crappy sequels.

Folklore is a unique video game experience. Game Republic has crafted a wonderful tale, with multiple layers, that blends both adventure and RPG elements. The method of telling the story is compelling and even throwing the game up on a 42-inch Bravia HD merely enhanced the visual delight the game offers. While the characters seem to be working as quickly as possible to resolve their underlying personal quests, the game’s pacing is not one that asks players to rush through. Rather, it is an adventure to be savored

There are many other aspects of the game worthy of discussion, but we can't cover all of them here. Let's just end our commentary by saying that a great deal of the magnificence in Folklore comes from the little details: the serenity within a field of bristling flowers and cascading petals, or the charm of a stairway that rings with laughter when your character's foot falls upon it - these are just a few of the many moments that may bring an awed smile to your face. Unfortunately, though the game is very enjoyable to play, the menu load time, framerate, and level repetition issues can detract from the gameplay experience. But we strongly recommend that you don't let these concerns stop you from playing Folklore. This is one of the best titles to hit the PlayStation 3, and its eccentricity and charm are undeniable. Unless you're just a straight adrenaline junkie, don't miss your opportunity to witness the poetry and magic of this ethereal hit.

Folklore is a huge surprise that blind-sided the PS3. We missed out on the PSN demo and are now regretting it. Folklore won't have mass appeal but it is a gem in the PS3 library. From the superb narrative, to the simple, yet effective gameplay mechanics Folklore is genius that shines through. The one shame about the game is that it might be covered up by some of the larger names this fall. The linear nature of the level design will also be a turn off but with the environments looking like they do, you'll always notice a new detail. Folklore is the most imaginative game to come along in ages. Do yourself a favor and check out the best told story on the PS3.

Folklore is the epitome of imaginative videogaming, it reminds me of what I felt when I first played ICO 6 years ago on, and it's a shame that yet another game may go largely unnoticed by most gamers. Hopefully, word of mouth spreads quickly, because Folklore is definitely not something that should be missed out on.

Overall, Folklore is easily one of the best PlayStation 3 exclusives to be found on the system yet. The game is lengthy and features a fun combat system, a large cast of obtainable creatures, an enjoyable story and two interesting characters, great sound, and beautiful art. This should be enough to please any RPG fan. If you like the RPG genre and own a PS3, then you definitely should not let this game get away. Go out and buy it right now. You won’t be disappointed.

It's entertaining, it's clever and beautiful while telling a somewhat disturbing story that references suicide, genocide and child abuse (good times!). Its gameplay won't satiate the blood thirsty appetites of the adrenaline junkies but if you're looking for a whimsical colorful tale that wouldn't be the least bit out of place in a fairytale book then Folklore is right up your alley

Wäre die Story nicht ganz so linear ausgefallen und hätte man nicht gänzlich auf knifflige Rätsel und mehr Bewegungsfreiheit verzichtet, dann hätte Folklore wohl wirklich das Zeug zu einem wahren Meisterwerk gehabt. Trotzdem bekommt man mit Folklore von Game Republic ein wirklich interessantes und kreatives Action – Adventure vorgesetzt, welches, gespickt mit witzigen Ideen und hübscher Grafik, auf jeden Fall sein Geld wert ist.

Folklore is a hidden gem in the PS3 library of games. Incredible, charming, and imaginative, Folklore breaks down the barrier of standard button mashing action to deliver a deep and interesting adventure full of action, mystery and wonder. The artistic design is beautifully recreated making the environments and creature design one of the original entries I’ve seen in a while. Folklore is one game that you have to play to really get a feel fore its unique flair and original combat ideas.

Folklore is not a game for everyone, but those who are looking to get lost in a magical world of mystery will find a rewarding gaming experience. From a graphical and art direction standpoint there is nothing like it on any console. The mystery is engaging and even though the levels are linear you will find yourself taken back by the beauty. Collecting the many folk in the game becomes addicting and the controls are very satisfying. Folklore is an action game hidden in traditional RPG clothes, and while this may disappoint some gamers, no PS3 owner should miss out on the adventure.

It's fairly hard to say that Folklore isn't a great game, however it falls just below a must have release and it certainly isn't going to appeal to everyone. Some players will get extremely frustrated and never complete the game, whilst others may get a little bored with some slightly repetitive combat and levels. Other players are going to place this up next to their other all time favourites and play it many times. Perhaps it's best to give it a rent and make up your own mind if you are still unsure at this point, but Folklore is definitely a game we won't forget anytime soon, if for no other reason than the atmosphere it provides.

Kouji Okadas von keltischer Mythologie geprägter Ausflug ins Reich der Toten hat mich hin und her gerissen. Auf der einen Seiten stehen die wirklich famosen Kreaturen und Kulissen sowie die dramatische Story. Auf der anderen Seite wird die Handlung aber meist viel zu unspektakulär präsentiert. Die Comic-ähnlichen Lese-Standbilder haben zwar Stil, wirken aber reichlich antiquiert - genauso wie das äußerst kompakte und lineare Leveldesign. Zudem gibt es dadurch, dass die beiden Protagonisten stets dieselben Orte besuchen, unnötig viel Leerlauf und Wiederholungen. Dennoch ist Folklore etwas Besonderes: Das Durchstreifen der verschiedenen Totenreiche auf der Suche nach eurer Vergangenheit, das Spiel mit Ängsten, Erinnerungen und irischen Volksmärchen sowie die von einer gelungenen Sixaxis-Nutzung getragenen Kämpfe um die Seelen einzigartiger Fabelwesen haben eine Faszination, die einen immer wieder in die mal entspannende, mal aufwühlende Unterwelt lockt.

Sometimes, the best things in life are completely unexpected. Due to a veritable host of factors – blissful ignorance, an often cantankerous four-month-old son, and a longstanding penchant towards games featuring bullets, pucks, basketballs, and accelerators – I never had Folklore on my radar. After all, as a Japanese-flavored quasi action-RPG, it wasn't exactly near the top of my list of gotta-have-'em fall titles. Yet between some gorgeous visuals, a deep combat system, and a twisted world full of memorable people and places, Folklore is a highly entertaining experience on a system that desperately needs one.

These quibbles might keep Folklore from becoming the timeless interactive allegory it aspires to be, but they don't prevent it from delivering a long and satisfying exercise in combat experimentation, character development, and heady mythology. The curious mechanics and calculated, indirect combat won't appeal to everyone, but anyone that appreciates outlandish character design and trippy visuals should at least give it a try.

What saves this game from being just another monster collection RPG is the compelling narrative and the unique environments. I am also looking forward to the downloadable content which should help keep things fresh in the future. Although it isn't perfect, Folklore is definitely one fairy tale worth finishing.

Games like this surprise the hell out of me when they make it to the States. Folklore is one of those uber-Japanese, extremely quirky titles that seem like a gamble to present to FPS-addicted, ADD-riddled American gamers. I have to give Sony credit for taking that gamble, as it offers up some interesting ideas. It presents an extremely creepy atmosphere and interesting environments, complete with some odd “haunted carnival”-esque music. You’ll play as two characters as you unravel the narrative, beating up countless ghoulies and gaining powers along the way. Motion control is implemented nicely, as you’ll pull the “ids” out of defeated enemies with an upwards jerk of the Sixaxis. It certainly won’t appeal to everyone, however, and many of the levels take far too long. If you can deal with a certain amount of repetition and a very odd narrative, give it a shot.

Folklore is less of a gameplay achievement than it is an artistic one. The unique atmosphere of the game undoubtedly makes Folklore an intriguing and attractive title, but the actual gameplay falls a bit short, due to an ultimately shallow combat system and very confined levels. Maybe wait a couple of months, until you can find it at an attractive price.

Alamaailmoja on useita erilaisia, ja jokaisessa on kiitettävästi erilaista visuaalista tyyliä. Välijaksoissa esiintyvä Doolinin kylä huokuu Silent Hill -tyylistä hiljaista uhkaavuutta, mutta varsinainen kauhupeli Folklore ei ole, pikemminkin pääjuonta voisi verrata psykologiseen trilleriin. Siihen nähden on melkoinen epäsuhta, että juonta edistetään siirtymällä alamaailmaan lätkimään folkeja hengiltä. Kumpikaan osio ei sinällään ole huono, pikemminkin päinvastoin, mutta ne tuntuvat olevan kuin kahdesta eri pelistä. Jos tämä oli kehittäjien tarkoitus, siinä on onnistuttu. Kunkin Netherworld-jakson kolaamisen aikana on täysin mahdollista unohtaa, mitä Doolinissa oli meneillään, ennen kuin sieltä siirtyi pois - useimmiten kun pelistä tulee vielä pidettyä taukoa juuri alamaailmassa tötöilyn aikana. Kaksi rinnakkaista pelihahmoa joilla on kaksi rinnakkaista tehtävää taas aiheuttaa sen, ettei kummankaan kumpikaan tehtävä tunnu erityisen merkitykselliseltä.

Folklore, presenting a tale of legends, aspires itself to the status of a legendary game. Alas, the title is flawed by various shortcomings and poor design decisions, placing such grandeur beyond its grasp. But, however lofty its unfulfilled ambitions, Folklore is certainly not a bad game; indeed, it's a reasonably good game. If you've already finished all top-tier PlayStation 3 holiday titles on your personal hotlist, and you've a penchant for adventure titles or casual RPGs, you'll likely find Folklore enjoyable, if imperfect.

Folklore certainly has problems, but it will win you over in the end with mostly enjoyable gameplay. Capturing folks, upgrading their abilities and defeating bosses is gratifying enough to merit stomaching the game's awful presentational style. The graphics impress, the sound mostly satisfies, but the cutscenes typically bore the senses, even with the well thought-out plot. Despite these concerns, Folklore still manages to be an overall enchanting experience, albeit difficult to describe. It's not exactly an action game, it isn't really an RPG, and it's not a traditional adventure game. What it is, however, is a game that places most of its eggs in the gameplay basket, and succeeds on many levels in becoming oddly addictive.

You can't level this criticism at Folklore, which tries it's best to offer something you haven't seen before in everything from it's combat system to it's story and game world. Mit seinem schlichten und farblosen Ablauf, den Mängeln beim Feenwechseln und den zu gleichartig designten Kräften, erreicht Folklore spielerisch bestenfalls das gehobene Mittelmaß. Trotzdem werden sich einige von Euch durch die Versatzstücke keltischer Mystik und die geschickten Erzählstile inspiriert fühlen und Folklore als etwas weit Größeres in Erinnerung behalten, als nur ein weiteres Action-Rollenspiel. "Folklore" poderia galgar um espaço de maior destaque no acervo do PlayStation 3 não fossem problemas com "loading times" e a extrema linearidade com a qual se desenrola a trama, que, de quebra, ainda demora a engrenar. Mas, passado um certo tempo, surge um game com uma fórmula de combate envolvente e uma história inquietante, além de cenários e personagens cheios de qualidade. Por essas e ainda outras - pois muito mais poderia ser falado sobre "Folklore" -, vale a pena considerá-lo, principalmente se você gosta de combinações de estilo.

Sous des allures de patchwork ludique, Folklore n'est au final qu'un énième jeu d'action sur PS3. Cependant, le soft de Game Republic peut s'appuyer sur une atmosphère mystérieuse et envoûtante sortie des landes brumeuses d'Irlande, pour accrocher le chaland. Orné de plusieurs défauts (caméra parfois mal placée, action légèrement redondante malgré un bon système de jeu, côté RPG effacé), le jeu reste agréable grâce à une incroyable imagerie fantasmagorique, une utilisation astucieuse du Sixaxis et des combats renouvelés grâce au grand nombre de Folks disponibles. Une sorte de sommeil permanent duquel il faudra sortir pour faire la lumière sur toute cette ombre planant sur Lemrick.

The storytelling issues and linear environments get in the way, but overall, Folklore is an enjoyable game that spins a good yarn and can be a lot of fun to play. It doesn't make a great first impression, but you should stick with it. After all, you get to suck the souls right out of your enemies. There's something to be said for that.

At the end of the day Folklore is a solid game experience, but probably not for everyone. Adventure gamers will be disappointed with the game's lack of depth and RPG players may not like the heavy focus on action, the use of the Six-Axis controller and the linear nature of the game. But the real charm of Folklore is the excellent presentation, decent storytelling, wonderfully entertaining characters and the beauty of the combat system. If story and visuals are what you are looking for, then Folklore is worth a try.

Throughout the adventure the art-direction is great, and while I would rather the voices be maintained in real-time, the classy comic-book stylings of the in-game story stuff is still quite cool. But the real juice here (in terms of story) is the CG stuff which is absolutely stunning, from visuals and imagination to direction and style, they’re almost worth the price of admission alone (if only there were a few more). Still, this isn’t the saving grace game Sony are looking for, and while it is imaginative, it still lacks the sort of depth and originality the PS3 so sorely needs at the moment. If you own the console, however, and like your adventure games delivered with a bit of kookiness, you should most definitely check this out.

Folklore is a game that has extremely high aspirations both in terms of storytelling and ethical engagement. Although it is certainly a valiant attempt, I felt it never quite hit the nail on the head. That said, this is a great little game that should bolster the slightly light PS3 release list. The visuals and story writing alone are worth shelling out the GBP 40 for. If however, you reserve your gaming funds for the cream of the crop you should probably wait until some of the other triple-A releases that are fast approach along with Christmas make it to shelves.

Helaas maakt de actie-RPG Folklore teveel fouten om een geslaagd product genoemd te mogen worden. De gameplay met de vele verschillende folks, die zeker potentie heeft, wordt teveel verziekt door allerlei mankementen in de structuur van het spel. De verschillende delen van de game komen niet goed samen, waardoor een onsamenhangende mix ontstaat die bovendien nog enkele andere problemen kent. Echte liefhebbers zullen zich er doorheen worstelen, maar reken je jezelf niet tot die groep, wacht dan op andere eindejaarstoppers om je zuurverdiende centjes aan uit te geven.

It’s too easy to say not to judge a book by its cover. Though the saying mostly fits in this instance, Folklore is better than most titles you’ll find in the land of the dead called the bargain bin. No part of its design is disastrous, just unfocused. I can still appreciate what it tries to do, even while I complain about how it’s executed. If you’re someone who pines for originality and risk-taking, then Folklore is a tale worth flipping through.

And so Folklore turns out to be one part boring adventure game, one part underdeveloped collect-em up, and one part standard dungeon crawl. The only aspect of the game that rises above the mundane is its technical polish and the vibrant creativity with which its imaginary worlds have been created - the vivid luminescence of the Fairy World, or the scratchy, Ian Miller-esque authenticity of the War World for example. Apart from that, it's totally average (and in case you're thinking of importing: if you don't read kanji you'll need a translator or to wait for the US/UK version, because the occasional - impressive - cut-scenes are the only bits in English).

Aguicheur, Folklore avait de quoi plaire. Si les premiers abords sont sympathiques, on découvre vite les défauts du jeu, à peine cachés par une excellente ambiance et servit par des graphismes inégaux et une mise en scène soporifique. Le jeu avait pourtant des bonnes idées, mais à vouloir jouer sur plusieurs genres, on finit par se retrouver sans véritable identité. Heureusement vous en verrez le bout en une quinzaine d'heures et c'est bien suffisant.
