Journey is a masterpiece. It’s a short-lived experience, but totally captivating, and one you’ll be happy to repeat time and time again like a great piece of music or a much-loved movie. It’s beautiful to look at, has a majestic and often haunting score, and feels like no other game before it. If we could, we’d force you to play it, but as it is we’ll simply urge you not to miss out.

Journey is a visual an aural accomplishment that manages to be both universally appealing and a joy to play. It may be a little short, but those that see it through to completion will likely remember the experience for the rest of their lives.
The A.V. Club (Mar 19, 2012)
Journey is a marvel, a hallucination of gameplay that feels as deep and immersive as the borderless desert where it begins. Thatgamecompany (the developer behind Flower) has created an abstract story of spiritual fulfillment that’s tinted with magic and suffused with almost ethereal beauty. Brief as the trip may be (an hour, maybe two), the experience is unforgettable.
The Guardian (Mar 13, 2012)
Journey's visual and sound design sets new standards for interactive entertainment. This alone makes it an extraordinary work, but it's the way that these aesthetic elements come together with beautifully subtle direction and storytelling to create a lasting emotional effect that elevates this to one of the very best games of our time.
TheSixthAxis (Mar 01, 2012)
Allegory and metaphors in games of this ilk are mostly, intentionally or not, subjective, but Journey for me is simple and defined without any ambiguity: we all have a simple beginning and a simpler end and are – as the nondescript, universal cloak the character wears throughout demonstrate – all created equal. It’s who we meet and what we do along the way with those people that matters above anything else. And standing alone, in silence, can be heartbreaking.

Digital Spy (Mar 01, 2012)
As much as Journey is a game, it is also a metaphor for life. We travel onward though life – perhaps aimlessly, perhaps with purpose – but always with those experiences shaped by the friends, family and loved ones around us. The fact that Journey has so effectively condensed the experience into a two-hour interactive poem is an astonishing achievement. It is the evolution of Jason Rohrer's art game Passage, bringing an unmatched humanity to the experience through its multiplayer. It is the urge to share that experience with others, the pull to seek out and socialise, that will draw players back to Journey a second, third, fifth and eighth time. Journey may not appeal to every player's tastes, but it is one of the finest examples of the art form that everyone should experience.
It’s a game that absolutely won’t be for everyone. But it’s one of the most perfect gaming experiences I can remember, created with care, packed with creativity, and topped with an irresistible ambiguity that makes every person’s Journey unique. It’s one of the few games you’ll genuinely reflect on after completion, and an object lesson in how less can be more when it comes to crafting narrative and eliciting investment. This is a game about which I would change nothing, and I can’t remember having said that too many times before.
Push Square (Mar 01, 2012)
Experiences like Journey don’t come around very often in any form of media. thatgamecompany’s crafted an interactive tour de force that’s triumphant in its ability to cycle through human emotions. It’s a game that demands your involvement on a spiritual level, rather than a purely mechanical one, and while it’s never preachy in its philosophical intentions, it’s hard not to get wrapped up in the divine nature of Journey’s tale.
PSN Stores (Mar 01, 2012)
If you’ve ever had a taste for adventure, that swirling sensation in your stomach as you peek outside your comfort zone, you need look no further. If you’ve ever wanted to explore the unknown, find solace in a complete stranger’s presence, all the while experiencing something utterly unique, then you need to play Journey. I can think of nothing better in a game than exploring the desert, and seeing what secrets the sands have to offer.
Joystiq (Mar 01, 2012)
Journey is, for lack of a better word, awesome. It has not only raised the bar for video games as a storytelling medium and a form of artistic expression, but it has also expanded the definition of the term "multiplayer" and changed my perception of what a cooperative gaming experience can be. Every single aspect of its design, be it aural, visual or conceptual, is deliberately and meticulously orchestrated, resulting in a wonderful, harmoniously joyful expression of love.

Dokonce i pro lidi, kteří jinak hry vůbec nehrají, nevěří jim a připadají jim vyloženě podezřelé. Už jen vidět průchod touhle neuvěřitelnou nádherou je mimořádná jízda, kterou pravděpodobně ocení vaše přítelkyně, matka i babička. A aktivně se toho zúčastnit, překonat všechen ten písek, vítr a nástrahy, odhalit tajemství prastarých ruin, zaniklé civilizace i magické hory na obzoru... to je prostě zážitek, jaký nemá obdoby. Ohromující grafika, okouzlující hudba, snadno uchopitelná hratelnost aplikovaná v nápaditých kontextech, odhalování, překvapení za překvapením a pochopení ústřední zápletky, když na konci cesty záhada přestane být záhadou a vše do sebe krásně zaklapne. Berte všemi deseti.
There are such few games out there right now like Journey; it's really the antithesis of modern gaming and the spectacle really demands your attention. This is a quiet game, without traditional moments of conflict, that doesn't guide you around with any indication of what you should do. You just go and experience the game and take everything in. A friend recently asked me what PlayStation 3 exclusive titles this year were really worth getting; well, Journey is, and it's worth more than its sticker price in what it tries and succeeds wildly at doing.
Playstation Universe (Mar 06, 2012)
I cannot heap enough praise on the magic formula that thatgamingcompany has come up with for Journey. Almost every aspect of the game is just stunning, from the art direction to the incredible aural presentation. Someone once asked me if I would recommend this title to any type of gamer; simply put, if you miss out on Journey, you are denying yourself one the best gaming experiences on any platform to date, period.
TotalPlayStation (Mar 12, 2012)
I don't toss "perfect" scores around lightly, yet I have no reservations doing so here. Games that summon up emotions from a cold son of a bitch like me are incredibly rare... Journey had me grabbing the box of tissues by the time it was over.
Giant Bomb (Mar 13, 2012)
Who is Journey for, then? It is for those that are able to lose themselves in the experience. That is perhaps a vague, nebulous recommendation, but that’s similarly the grand sum of Journey. It’s not a game you can easily pigeonhole into a specific genre or niche. There isn't an easy "if you like this, then you'll definitely like this" kind of comparison to be made. Perhaps the blandest description I can give for it is that it is a game made more to be felt and appreciated rather than simply consumed, as we so often tend to do with new games nowadays. Journey may be a game predicated on familiar mechanics and concepts, but what it does with them is something that borders on revelatory.
Game Revolution (Mar 15, 2012)
You'd pay more at the movie theater for an experience like Journey. You'd pay even more for a Blu-ray you can watch over and over at home on your PS3. As a development studio, thatgamecompany has transcended the typically meaningless bullshit gamers consume on a day-to-day basis. They've created a piece of moving, living, breathing artwork, that tells a story, and deeply involves players in its pages. I haven't been more captivated by a video gaming in years. There were moments in Journey that I stopped pushing the directional stick because I was too busy taking in my character's surroundings. Should you play Journey? Yes. You should play Journey. Right now.
DarkZero (Mar 17, 2012)
Players expecting a 10-12 hour romp through the fantastically-designed locales of Journey’s world will be disappointed to know that the title lasts about two or so hours. Now, I certainly wouldn’t consider this a bad thing. Journey plays like a fantastic, riveting silent film and has the timespan of one. The only thing that disappoints me about this is leaving the sheer beauty of the world thatgamecompany has managed to craft. You’ll be happy to know that while I can’t divulge the plot of Journey to you, I can definitely tell you that it begins and ends in the title. There is no cliffhanger. There is nothing to keep you coming back for more besides the absolutely exquisite environments, the very-clean interface, solid controls, and Triple-A camera cutscenes. Deep, I know.
G4 TV: X-Play (Mar 06, 2012)
If there are flaws in Journey, I’m not the person to ask about them. The game is both emotionally and visually stirring enough that any problems are insignificant to the point of not meriting mention. There is a meme floating around the internet claiming that various stories—from Pokémon to Cast Away—provide a better love story than the Twilight series. I couldn’t help but think about this while watching Journey a half-dozen times. Other games depend heavily on the time you spend with a character to develop a demonstrative connection with them. This is the case with Fallout 3, Mass Effect 2, and myriad other games. However, in a mere hour and a half, Journey made more of an impact on my psyche than any game I have ever played. Honestly, I still don’t think Trent has quite recovered.
The Escapist (Mar 20, 2012)
Journey is incredibly short - you'll finish in about two hours - and it's not really all that challenging in the traditional gameplay sense. But it will be meaningful to you in a way that a bigger, louder, flashier game won't. It's a genuine masterpiece that will undoubtedly be on countless "best games of 2012" lists. Play it.
The Verge (Mar 01, 2012)
So what makes Journey ideal for that first contact with interstellar intelligence? It's universal. Without words, it promises to touch anyone that experiences it. Even watching someone else play leaves you gripped by the events on screen. Whether you've been playing games since childhood, play Angry Birds on the commute into work, or you just cruised the Xarthan Nebula with your new pulse engine and don't even know what a video game is, you'll be affected by this journey. It should be experienced by everyone.
Journey is a game about life. While so many games strive to be true to one specific concept, Journey represents the arc that encompasses all emotions. It tries to be all things to all people, and it succeeds, because you take your life experiences into the game. Regardless of age, race, culture, or gender, any open-minded player can find something amazing here. Don’t let Journey’s short length fool you either. This is a dense, rich game where every second is precious. There is no filler. Even at three hours, it’s impossible to take everything in during your first time playing it, and hidden collectibles and curios offer extra encouragement to come back to this world. Journey is a beautiful game, inside and out, and it pushes the boundaries of what games can do.
100 (May 23, 2012)
Games come and go, but experiences last forever. This is what Journey does best. The experience in playing Journey is, well, a journey in itself. You embark on an adventure, come upon surprises and explore the unknown. It’s quite simply the most perfect game. Emotions cannot be bought, nor can they be won, but they can definitely be felt in a video game and that’s just as good as anywhere else.
100 (Apr 05, 2012)
Very rarely do you come across anything flawless, but when you do, the joy it emits is amazing. I have never given a game a 10 in my life and when purchasing this I didn’t plan to. But when actually scouring the game looking for flaws, there wasn’t one in sight. Journey is not a game, it is an experience. So if you’re willing, put your gaming headphones on (if you have any), sit back and just play it the whole way through without stopping.
Splitkick (Mar 05, 2012)
Eight years after leaving the church, I went back on my own terms soon after my aforementioned grandmother passed away. Questions pertaining to death, how I live my own life, and a search for something greater brought me there, much of which you might find in Journey. Calling it a religious experience would be doing it a disservice though. You can’t overlay a particular religion’s ideologies on top of this title. Despite your beliefs, you should take the short time to play though this truly spectacular title. With Journey, thatgamecompany has masterfully conveyed a spiritual expression of life, death, and the places in-between.
In conclusion, Journey is a spectacular game that evokes emotions you would never expect from a video game. Journey will make you cheer, laugh, jump in fear and possibly cry from the wonderful storytelling. Lengthwise, it took me 2 hours to complete Journey, so I consider it to be a short but sweet game. If you like collecting trophies, there are some very interesting ones that bring up the replay value of the game. I also enjoyed playing through the game a second time to help others on their adventure. I definitely recommend playing through this game if you enjoy video games as an art form. You owe it to yourself.
Cheat Code Central (Mar 14, 2012)
I have had the privilege to enjoy many different types of video game experiences in my lifetime, from the mundane to the gorgeous. Yes, there have been experiences like Journey before, but it has been far too long since we've seen one. If thatgamecompany continues to deliver games that challenge boundaries and give players a deep understanding of their own selves, then I will always be among the first to sing their praises.
Game Chronicles (Mar 22, 2012)
Journey transcends conventional gaming and becomes more of an interactive experience designed to evoke (not force) emotional responses through subtle imagery, sublime music, and the perfect balance of adventure and discovery. It is easily one of the best games I’ve played this year and one of the top 5 PSN titles of all time. Download it now and prepare to embark on your own journey of self-discovery. Who knows...that cloaked figure chirping at you might just be me...
Gamegravy (Mar 16, 2012)
Ultimately, though, Journey is an amazing experience, with emotionally evocative music that compliments its gameplay and scenery perfectly. This is, without a doubt, something that should be played, cherished, and contemplated on. Don’t miss Journey.
Game Arena (Mar 14, 2012)
I tried to write this review without sounding pretentious and I don’t think I succeeded. Journey won’t be for everyone - if you didn’t like Flower, or prefer to remain emotionally disconnected from your games, then Journey will feel like little more than a very pretty - and short - slap in the face. If you can enjoy a game as an emotional experience however, buy Journey now.
I can ramble on about Journey for pages and pages on end but nothing I say can really explain the delight of such a game. I highly recommend everyone try it wholeheartedly. Take a break from your Modern Warfare 3, Skyrim, Mass Effect 3 or whatever you are playing now and give Journey a go – it really should not be missed. It is a short, breathtaking experience that is, without a doubt, a milestone in gaming history and finally puts to bed the whole ‘video game as art-form‘ argument. If Journey is not art, I really do not know what is.
Games are at their best when I’m playing them and authoring my experience as I go along. If I had to describe Journey for its most game-y achievements, you could call it a successful platformer—most of the traditional engagement involves jumping on things, gliding to the next ledge, absorbing jump energy to make the proper distance across a chasm. But I now know what director Jenova Chen was lamenting to me a while back, when he kept reading previews straining to detail what you do in Journey. He wanted to know what we felt. I felt a sense of wonder, peace, and even a little awe at times. If a spiritual experience sounds odd to you, perhaps I could call it meditative. These aren’t words that come often in a video game.
PlayStation Lifestyle (Mar 03, 2012)
Some will be disappointed by how quickly the game ends, but the two hours that mark your journey is the most incredible and unique you can possibly have on your PS3. Flower is often used as an example of how games are art, but Flower is a mere sketch compared to the oil painting that is Journey. With perfect music, gorgeous visuals and powerful single and multiplayer experiences, Journey is the PlayStation Network’s must own magnum opus.
PSX Extreme (Mar 05, 2012)
Journey is a mesmerizing and extraordinary experience. It successfully taps into the deepest parts of ourselves, allowing us to simultaneously reflect and explore. Playing alone is akin to a soul-searching trek; we all strive to reach the top of that mountain, even if we don’t know exactly how to get there. It doesn’t matter if we’re scared. We have to get there because something inside us compels us to move forward, whatever the cost. It’s the classic metaphor for life; it’s the adventure we might take if you believe in an afterlife. It resonates universally. Essentially, it’s an artistic triumph that reaches outside the boundaries of interactive entertainment. And in doing so, it delves deep inside and finds a home where all our hopes, dreams and fears reside.
Game Over Online (Mar 19, 2012)
Other than one annoying issue with the default camera, I really can't think of a flaw the game has. I can see some not liking it because it lacks dialogue or something like a licensed soundtrack, but as far as a game being an example of a vision coming to fruition and serving as a new textbook example for games being art, there aren't too many other games out there on par with Journey. The main game may only take two hours to beat, but it's an unforgettable experience. It's also well-worth replaying due to the sheer beauty of everything and the online co-op allowing for a completely different experience each time through. Anyone who loved Team Ico's games or thatgamecompany's other efforts like fl0w and Flower will love this – it's easily worth the $15 asking price.
MMGN (Apr 12, 2012)
Upon the completion of Journey, I simply sat back on my couch and contemplated the events that had just unfolded. Unlike other games that have a clear goal, story and conclusion, Journey let the player create their own story, taking in tidbits given out via our own interpretation of glyphs presented to us as we progress. It is through this innovative notion that Journey remains a mystery; a personal experience that is going to be completely different for everyone. If you own a PS3 and you don't believe video games can be art, then you simply need to play five minutes of this fantastic quest to see that you are wrong.
Digital Chumps (Mar 02, 2012)
It's one thing to recognize a metaphor, but another to speculate about the purpose behind its elusive possibility. Games don’t typically indulge in the latter, but Journey takes that particular sentiment and bets it across the board. Its approach to control, cooperative play, failure, exploration, and gratification are fundamentally novel and indifferent to its peers. These deliberate alternatives might seem unwieldy because we keep implicit rules reserved in our minds, but Journey’s pretends none of them ever existed and still manages to treat its audience with the utmost respect. What a joy that it’s a lot of fun to play, too.
Hooked Gamers (Mar 15, 2012)
Journey asks no questions and gives no answers. Everything is left up to the player to decide, and it is wonderfully refreshing. The game does a great job of driving you forward and there wasn’t a single moment where my attention wasn’t directed solely at the screen. I rarely throw the word masterpiece around, but it truly is, and I would urge anyone to play this game, you won't regret it.
3D Juegos (Mar 01, 2012)
AusGamers (Mar 20, 2012)
It still astounds me that a couple of hours of gameplay left such a profound impact. I found myself unconsciously pondering the trek whilst daydreaming – musing even -- over the spiritual implications and was eager to take it for another spin hoping to find another wanderer in the desert to share an unspoken pilgrimage with. Journey makes you feel like a leaf on the wind, helpless in the face of adversity -- small in the grand scheme of things. Embrace the elements, give yourself over to it and soar to new heights.
Factornews (Mar 23, 2012)
The Telegraph (Mar 30, 2012)
Some will find Journey too slight and too sparse an experience to justify the asking price. And that's fine, it deliberately speaks to an audience that will fall head-over-heels for its painterly style and worthy metaphors. But whatever camp you fall into, never say Journey isn't a video game. While it is one of the most expressive and unique titles of the medium, it is a video game. A magnificent one. Embrace it.
Inside Gaming (Mar 03, 2012)
Once in a while a game comes along that makes you proud to be a gamer. It’s the kind of game you want to show your parents to prove to them that it’s not all explosions and fast cars. It’s the kind of game that you want to tell Roger Ebert to go play after he makes inflammatory statements about how video games can never be art. And it’s the kind of game that given the right platform and exposure, has the potential to resonate with an audience that doesn’t usually care about games. Journey is one of those games.
90 (Mar 02, 2012)
Less is most definitely more in this beautifully understated co-op adventure, that dares you to make sense of its enigmatic voyage. Gorgeous visuals and presentation, and superbly orchestrated level design and set pieces. Minimalist co-op options are inspired and add greatly to the game's quiet profundity. It is, however, very short and very linear, and has little real replayability.
Wired (Mar 01, 2012)
Even though I often struggled to find meaning within the game’s mysterious world, Journey doesn’t need to be explained. It’s still a fulfilling experience.
90 (Mar 01, 2012)

From start to finish it's going to take you about two hours to experience Journey. And there isn't much of a challenge along the way: no boss battles, difficult puzzles or classic game mechanics to hinder your progress. But that doesn't mean there isn't excitement and I found myself glued to the screen for the entirety of the playthrough. I went from being confused, to interested, to amused, touched...well basically the entire range of emotions. Journey becomes what you make of it and it's filled with whatever you choose to fill it with. And maybe, just maybe our paths will cross as we make our way towards that distant mountain.

My gaming tastes are such that I’m perfectly conditioned to fall in love with something like Journey. Keep that in mind — if you’re more about visceral action or epic 40-hour experiences, you should possibly look elsewhere. But in my opinion, this is one of the best games out there that can provide you with an experience — and a memorable, highly positive one at that.

Journey's disappointments sting all the more, because here is an immaculately constructed, expertly choreographed experience that tells a story in a unique, intelligent way, exploring themes of faith and fate, death and rebirth with a rare delicacy of touch. That it comes at a time where risk is routinely avoided, sent out into a landscape clouded by doubt and dominated by the safe, the tried and tested? Maybe that's the real wonder.
Game Informer Magazine (Mar 13, 2012)
If you judge a game solely by its complex battle systems, intricate puzzles, or branching upgrade systems, Journey is likely a disappointment. If you’re open to that often nebulous realm of how a game might elicit emotion and the artistic potential of interactive narrative, Journey is an absolute must-play. During the course of covering the game, I completed it at least three times, with one entire playthrough being with a partner. Each time, without fail, individual moments (particularly the final level) managed to give me goosebumps, and those moments have remained on my mind for weeks afterward. Give Journey the same attention you might bring to a musical concert, a well-directed film, or a long-awaited book, and its rewards are substantial.
Destructoid (Mar 01, 2012)
Journey is a defiant bridge between art and game, managing to emotionally connect without being cloying, and succeeding in being mysterious without becoming pretentiously vague and obfuscating. Journey's interactive, visual, and aural elements work together, rather than fight with each other, in order to provide a flowing, seamless, influential, and utterly exhilarating experience. This is interactive art. This is how it's done.
GameTrailers (Mar 01, 2012)
Anyone sick of way points, craving adventure and out to prove that not all those who wander are lost will love Journey, and retrace its steps many times.
Games TM (Mar 02, 2012)
Where Journey truly excels is in its top-of-the-range visuals, inventive world and its tonal breadth. One moment you will find yourself avoiding the spotlights of menacing, sentient war machines 20 times your size in a barely lit dungeon, and the next plodding through the harsh mountain peaks with almost no visibility, all accompanied by a genuine sense of dread as your character visibly starts to die and can barely walk anymore. Journey batters the senses through these moments, with each section of the pilgrimage introducing new puzzles and threats, and in around a listless hour and a half it’ll all be over. Some might feel short-changed, but while it lasts Journey manages to enthuse, excite and entertain in equal measure, and this is testament to the expertise of the developer.
GameSpot (Mar 02, 2012)
It's a real accomplishment that Journey draws together so many conventional game elements, and so well, and still feels like the art piece we expect from the makers of Flow and Flower: intriguing, ambiguous, and experimental. The game's length, two or three hours on the outside, is exactly right, letting you take in the whole experience in one session. Once you've completed it, you can dip back into favourite chapters, and even without the impact of unexpected reveals, it's uncommonly enthralling. Its deliberate ambiguity brings on the urge to speculate on deeper meanings, but meaning here is bound to be personal, and best discovered for yourself. Discover it you should.
GamesRadar (Mar 02, 2012)
Journey is an unforgettable experience. Even when the details fade, the emotions that it evoked will stay with us for years. The pacing, the sense of scale, and the feeling of awe are all razor sharp. It all merged together as we discovered another player in our traversal. We won’t play another game like it, and frankly, we won’t need to, either. If you’re a gamer, it’s an outstanding reminder of why love this medium. Do not hesitate to embark.

Play Journey with a random - and chances are that you will - and all the convenient metaphors and artificiality melt away. The game's lunges at profundity disappear, and you're left to focus on the core of the experience: a pilgrimage, filled with incident, compacted into the space of a few glorious set-pieces. Granted, thatgamecompany's done most of the work for you. The studio has poured the deserts, trashed the temples and filled the world with the floating presence of a nameless almighty. The truly brilliant move, though, was to leave a space at the very centre of the design that only a stranger can fill. The master stroke, as in all great myths, lies not with God, but with the human element.
Game Critics (Mar 18, 2012)
Whether it's seen as an incomplete art object or a transcendent masterpiece, Journey is beautiful from its solemn opening to its masterful ending. The end result is not only a parable for human life in game form, but also a literal journey for developer thatgamecompany as they move from smaller projects to bigger ideas, all the while helping to redefine what it means to make games for the masses.
gamrReview (Mar 17, 2012)
Personal, simple and intriguing. It's probably the closest gaming has ever been to making two players feel like Frodo and Sam heading to Mordor, and though it's not perfect in every aspect, it can be an amazing experience.
Journey is an enigma, both keenly directed and liberatingly open. It's occasionally impenetrable, but that's the price of mystery. A short trip, but one to cherish.
Darkstation (Mar 30, 2012)
Regardless of what the future holds for the studio, if you only play one game by thatgamecompany, let it be Journey. Taking the experiences and lessons learned from developing previous games, they have fashioned a title that will stand the test of time and be remembered for its beauty, simplicity and the ability to encourage a dialog. It moves the player emotionally and has the power to turn brief, momentary encounters into deep, meaningful experiences.

Let's sum up. Does Journey hold up to its predecessors? It absolutely does! If you're a fan of thatgamecompany and the games they make, I can guarantee you won't be disappointed with Journey and if you haven't already picked it up, make sure you do. However, if you are more of an action junky who doesn't really enjoy arthouse games, I can't say that it's easy to recommend. Journey is an excellent example of how video games can be expressive and for that, I commend thatgamecompany in their continued success. This is an experience unlike most anything on the market today; I would encourage you not to miss it!
New Game Network (Mar 23, 2012)
Whether you care to examine the thematic underpinnings of this adventure or simply appreciate the audio-visual treats on offer, it is undeniable that Journey is something unique. Dig under its surface and you have an experience that says something rather profound about videogame adventures.
Cheat Happens (Apr 10, 2012)
A lot of people are going to give Journey a try, and some are going to downright hate it. They'll find it boring and lackluster. They'll find nothing to do, but digging deeper and staying with the title will result in one of the most moving experiences you'll have with a game. Journey tells a story, and it tells it like no other. Journey is one of those games that challenges what the medium can do, and hopefully the world will take notice.
IGN (Mar 01, 2012)
Those of you that played Flower might notice that Journey mirrors many of its predecessor’s emotional milestones. Journey celebrates the poignancy of nature, it startles you with the unexpected, and empowers you in an exhilarating, unforgettable conclusion. The hours spent completing Journey will create memories that last for years.
Journey is an archetypal story of the struggle we go through in life as we tackle any tough mission. You start out fresh, and your goal is formidable, but it’s not so far away. Then you find there are twists and turns, and the journey takes its toll on you. The game evokes an incredible amount of emotion from you, and it is the kind of game that its fans will play over and over. To employ a trite but true maxim, the Journey is the reward. The game is an amazing accomplishment in an industry that is focused on creating blockbusters with a $50 million budget. If it has a flaw, it is that the game is too short. But at least the developers at Thatgamecompany leave you wanting more.
Gameplay (Benelux) (Mar 31, 2012)
Play (UK) (Mar 01, 2012)
It’s a short one, and those looking to the quick-fix world of explosions and ultra-gore (also: boobs) might not feel it. But these are criticisms soon forgotten by those who spend any real time with Journey; its haunting atmosphere sure to leave a mark – just as, say, Flower did before it. It’s like one of those cheap getaways you can pick up in the likes of The Sun – ‘three quid for a family holiday!’ – except this one is eight quid, and this one is actually worth doing (with less risk of standing on an upended hypodermic syringe in the sand). Journey comes with a hearty recommendation.
Games Finder (Feb 27, 2014)
Journey is indeed a mesmerising experience albeit a short one. It is worth experiencing especially if you have an appreciation for the artistic side of game design.
XGN (Mar 01, 2012)

Edge (Mar 01, 2012)
The problem with building a game around the magic of discovery is that it’s a one-time enchantment. But Journey’s real issue, if it has one, goes much deeper than that. It’s a resolutely linear game in which your range of interactions is minimal. For some, that will make it a pretty but hollow novelty; boring, perhaps. But for those who play games to explore strange lands, see beautiful sights and to immerse themselves – for however brief a time – in a new world, Journey is perfect. And what’s more, they’ll find someone like them to share it with.
Thunderbolt Games (Mar 30, 2012)
Like other thatgamecompany videogames, Journey’s less interested in being a videogame. It would like to be taken as art instead but the game parts remain the only way to experience the artful pieces. The mechanics serve a functional purpose and stay out of the way. And it about ends there. Journey’s worth playing for the unique experiences offered but the actual involvement with the mechanics isn’t always engaging enough to match.
Gamekult (Mar 07, 2012)

Quarter to Three (Mar 19, 2012)
There’s no challenge and no real gameplay, which isn’t necessarily a criticism. It’s sort of like Shadow of the Colossus without any colossi, or Ico without the little girl. It does have multiplayer, though. Other players run around in your game pulling your switches, mashing their circle buttons to activate the “hey, over here!” beacons, and basically going the same place you’re going without any meaningful way to interact with you unless you both know Morse code. How’s that for a metaphor for online gaming?
