In almost every moment, Saints Row 4 feels like playing a cheesy superhero movie. Tied together by parody and pastiche, the whole world is just an excuse to throw gameplay variety at the player, and I felt like an over-powered badass throughout. It's not sophisticated or subtle, nor does it want to be. And the game's open stance on character customization and gender let me play the way I wanted to. Saints Row IV made me feel superhuman — and that's what this kind of game is all about.

Saints Row IV is a must have title, it throws away the rule book and just wants you to have a great time. The Next Generation is upon us, but you might miss it as you get lost in the virtual world of a simulated Steelport with no rules to hold you back.

Despite a few frustrations, glitches, and questionable design decisions, Saints Row IV is still a ton of fun to play through – whether solo or in the series’ returning co-op mode. Vehicles may not be as exciting this time around, but the thrill of soaring through the skies and navigating with ease makes up for it. With tons of upgrades and weapon customization, making your President more and more powerful is an addictive and rewarding affair, and you can become virtually unstoppable by the end. Saving Steelport may not be quite as novel of an experience this time around, but an arsenal of new abilities and weapons ensures that you are doing it with more style and spectacle than ever before.

I wasn't able to test cooperative gameplay pre-release, but I don't want to wait until launch to dive back into the manic, memorable world of Saints Row IV. There's a disappointing lack of technical polish, and the game's foundation is copy-pasted from its predecessor, but this roller coaster ride is one I'll eagerly take again. For every game concept and trope it lampoons, Saints Row IV respectfully asks, "What makes games fun?" And then it throws you off a tower and hands you a black hole gun on the way down, because it can't be bothered to waste time answering the question. Neither should you. Saints Row IV is the answer.

Saints Row IV does not revolutionize the open-world genre. Hell, it doesn’t even revolutionize the series. It provides another fun chapter to the franchise. It has its faults--repetition, lack of substance outside of the main story and loyalty missions, and the occasional graphical hiccup--but then again, none of these truly matter because the game is just chaotic, simple fun. Seriously, Saints Row is filling a gap in the industry. Too many games on the market are melodramatic doom and gloom. It is refreshing to know that games such as Saints Row IV are built on the idea that people should have some [email protected]$^ing fun while playing a game. For that, I say thank you to Saints Row IV: purple d*ldo bat and all.

Superkräfte, Aliens, abgefahrene Waffen, stärker als je zuvor vollkommen überzogene Action, großartiger Humor - es gibt viele Gründe, enormen Spaß mit diesen Saints zu haben. Doch der Add-on-Charakter hat die eigenwillige Gang trotz aller Verbesserungen im Griff: Viele der Aktivitäten sind bekannt oder werden in leicht abgewandelter Form präsentiert, die wenigen neuen fügen sich gut ein. Erzählerisch sind das erste und letzte Drittel gelungen, wobei vor allem die Bezüge auf alle anderen Saints-Row-Teile bemerkenswert sind und ein gelungenes Gesamtbild ergeben. In der Mitte verliert man jedoch den Faden und auch der ansonsten treffsichere Humor, der vor kaum etwas aus Film- oder Spielewelt Halt macht, erleidet einige Fehlzündungen. Die Kulisse kämpft mit bekannten Schwächen und überzeugt mit bekannten Stärken. Volition gelingt unter dem Strich ein für mehr als 20 Stunden unterhaltender Abschluss der Reihe.

Saints Row IV has a lot going for it. The new super abilities and weaponry makes for a ceaselessly fun experience, even if the gameplay does tend to drag at times. The appreciated creativity and inventiveness is what saves the day; the often unique and twisted mission types, the overarching desire to enforce your own brand of justice, the world itself, etc. It just feels a little underwhelming. The dark setting gets a little tiring, there’s a bit of an identity crisis (superhero game or sandbox adventure?), and there’s some slight balancing issues with the new equipment. But if you loved The Third, I see no reason why SRIV won’t prove enjoyable.

But then you'll play a mission while baked on alien narcotics - temporarily affording you unlimited powers, of course - and all is forgiven in the chaos that follows. Saints Row 4 may lack refinement - nothing thwarts a superhero quite so frequently as an overhanging roof or your homies standing in a doorway - but it compensates with sheer exuberance. It's a heartfelt love letter to the superhero genre and to a medium that makes such madness possible. There's a fine art to being this gloriously dumb, it seems, which pretty much makes Saints Row 4 the Sistine Chapel ceiling of stupidity.

Tjugo timmar in i spelet har jag nog med anteckningar över anmärkningsvärda tillfällen för att fylla en mindre bok, och den smärta i käkmusklerna jag fick av för mycket skrattande har övergått i träningsverk. Föga förvånande finner jag mig en aning förvirrad av årets mest paradoxala uppföljare. Inte lika chockerande, men mekaniskt överlägsen tidigare spel i serien. En hejdlöst rolig upplevelse som kämpar, delvis förgäves, att överträffa sitt inledande kapitel. "Vänta lite, en komplicerad tanke? Bort med den! Här, ta en förstoringsståle och en gorillakostym så försvinner den nog!" Okej, Saints Row. Vad du än vill. Bara jag får flyga lite också!

Vous dire que j'étais tout à fait à l'aise en jouant ces derniers jours à Saints Row 4, avec parfois des invités dans le salon, serait mentir. Mais le boulot, c'est le boulot, et j'ai beau leur parler de Journey & cie aux convives, quand il faut vider son chargeur sur des aliens, accompagné par son gang de stripteaseuses à mitraillettes, en prenant bien soin de tout défoncer par télékinésie autour de soi sur Booty Bounce (label Mad Decent, TMTC), ben j'suis là ! Parce que Saints Row IV, c'est beauf et c'est bien, ça se prend bien en mains et comme quand on est dans la cour de récré, on n'a pas envie d'en sortir. Enfin plutôt de rentrer. Enfin bon c'est comme dans Matrix, vous m'avez compris !

Saints Row IV is an empowering, open game, with plenty for everyone to love, and perhaps most importantly, it’s just a ridiculous amount of fun. Unfortunately a number of small bugs and a short campaign length put the brakes on this fun experience a lot sooner than I would have liked, though the fun and features that are to be had are entirely worth it while it lasts.

Saints Row 4 may not be perfect, but it will, at least, be remembered for its brazen video game parodies, over-the-top set pieces and outrageous weaponry, rather than being a poor man's GTA. This, in itself, is a certifiable step in the right direction.

All in all, this is a release most Saints fans will praise for its commitment to crazy. I mean, the leader of the free world is also the head of a huge crime organization. That should tell you all you need to know about how Volition wants to produce games. It even takes time to poke fun at itself, which lets us know all of this is in an effort to entertain and not take things too serious. However, I do think the volume has been cranked up so much, that the fun to be had can me muddled to being, dare I say, boring after a while. The Missions are great, particularly the Story variety. The new Powers open things up to seemingly unlimited roaming and destroying possibilities.

Saints Row IV does everything in its presidential power to create a sandbox experience that constantly rewards and always surprises – and it succeeds. Despite the reused assets, a few questionable design choices, and the sometimes shaky technical performance, there’s still nothing in gaming quite like mowing down alien scum in a nitrous-charged golf cart, all while blasting Haddaway’s What Is Love from the radio. That’s what makes Saints Row special.

Al met al laat de game je constant verlangen naar meer en voldoet het ook aan dat verlangen door je telkens weer te verrassen met nieuwe gameplay-elementen of gekke gebeurtenissen. Een nieuwe glimlach overwint daarbij altijd de frustratie. Saints Row 4 bewijst zich daarmee als de ultieme uitlaatklep van onvolwassenheid.

No final, tudo depende do que procuram. Se querem boa diversão, Saints Row IV é a escolha acertada. Ao contrário do que possam pensar, o estúdio Volition não se preocupou em criar um bom jogo, mas antes em criar um jogo divertido e descontraído, que acabou por ser um bom jogo. Com esta entrada, Saints Row saiu finalmente da sombra de Grand Theft Auto, não para se tornar no seu igual ou semelhante, mas para se tornar em algo distinto e único.

Even if combat sometimes falls into a rut, there are more than enough surprises in the game's story missions to keep you entertained, and as in previous games, you can increase the mayhem by inviting a friend along to do missions and other activities. Saints Row IV owes a lot to games like Crackdown and Prototype, but the absurd humor that infuses every aspect of this game gives it an identity all its own. The simulated city of Steelport doesn't offer deep gameplay or the most satisfying challenge, but it is a great place to mess around.

Just like their characters, the developers may have taken their own hubris too far into the realm of the ridiculous to maintain player’s interest. When the main character under a player’s control is so powerful that he can traverse the entire city in a couple of minutes, you effectively render the city unimportant and your audience begins to care less and less about the game world your characters are living in. Supplementing the streets with glowing collectibles and earning the use of a weaponized dildo (yes, you read that right) can only take you so far before one begins to wonder why Bruce Campbell wasn’t hired to voice the main character.

Ce Saints Row IV s'inscrit comme un épisode à part, suite spirituelle du III zappant de ce fait la découverte narrative de Steelport, point de rupture vis-à-vis du gameplay originel pour dériver vers un TPS dopé aux super-pouvoirs : on ne sait pas vraiment sur quel pied danser, ni dans quelle catégorie le ranger. Toutefois, l'expérience s'avère concluante et plaisante, car renforcée par un contenu de qualité (10-12 heures pour la quête principale sans compter les quêtes annexes) et une profondeur de jeu toujours aussi appréciable. Seul ou en coop à deux, les missions s’enchaînent à coups de super-pouvoirs pour notre plus grand plaisir, même si le manque de finitions se fait parfois un peu trop ressentir.

With its recycled map and wildly overpowered abilities, playing Saints Row IV feels like a lot like enabling god-like cheat codes in Saints Row The Third and going nuts. Its ridiculous story, goofy characters, self-aware humor, and amazing character editor make it all work, especially for those of us who’ve played the previous games and can appreciate its in-jokes. But its appeal is shortened by the ludicrous speed at which we can zip across it and grow tired of its lack of challenge.

Peccato che i Volition si siano fatti prendere la mano finendo con il riciclare attività per missioni secondarie che invece avrebbero necessitato di uno scripting dedicato per renderle funzionali alla trama. In ogni caso, se da anni siete fan della serie aggiungete un punto al voto finale e fatelo vostro al Day One; tutti gli altri appassionati di free roamer lo tengano pure in caldo nel caso il prossimo 17 settembre succeda l'impensabile.

Nevertheless, there are plenty of hilarious moments and there’s a lot of new here in terms of Saints Row itself. If you enjoyed The Third – or just like having a bit of relatively mindless fun – then Saints Row IV is definitely for you.

Saints Row IV doesn’t play like a sequel so much as an expansion pack, substituting huge quantities of diversions and weaponry for an engaging campaign. With Steelport recycled and the lack of challenge, it doesn’t offer much beyond short-lived thrills through wanton destruction and the occasionally humorous moment wrapped in science fiction tropes. The fun is mostly derived from the amount of mayhem one can cause, but with many of the elements missing from the sandbox experience like empire-building and gradually gaining more power, it all feels rather hollow in comparison to the experience in previous Saints Row titles.

Occasionally excellent, often mired in mediocrity, Saints Row 4 is inferior to Red Dead Redemption and even five-year-old GTA IV in almost every way. And while you’re always likely to miss when comin’ at the kings, Volition’s effort still falls short of the more cohesive Sleeping Dogs, the expansive frolicking on Just Cause 2’s Panau and the polished pantomime of Infamous 2. You can be heroes, Saints… just not today.
