Street Fighter X Tekken is a triumphant marriage between two huge fighting franchises that could have quite easily been a mess. Filled to the brim with new characters and features, you'll be hard-pushed to find a bigger, better, more vibrant and appealing fighting game out there. Hadoken, indeed.
Vandal Online (Mar 05, 2012)
G4 Tech: Tech TV (Mar 06, 2012)
Street Fighter X Tekken takes a tried and true formula and puts a fresh new twist on it, sprinkling just the right amount of Tekken mechanics into a revamped 2D fighting engine. Players are sure to find a character that suits their style in the large cast of characters, and Tekken fans will be pleased to find that their favorite characters play similarly to their 3D-style counterparts, often sharing the same command input found in Tekken games. The core gameplay is top notch and is sure to please even the most hardcore fighting gamer. This crossover series has been long anticipated and the wait was well worth it.
DarkZero (Mar 08, 2012)
Capcom is on the ball when it comes to exciting fighting games. Say what you will about their DLC fiasco, but there’s no denying when it comes to what matters, Street Fighter X Tekken is one exhilarating fighting game that is easily recommended for Street Fighter fans. Even Tekken fans will get some enjoyment out of this, but how much they like 2D will be the final determining factor in how much they enjoy this fighter. Capcom has finished their end of the deal and come out with an A grade. The ball is in your court now Namco; how are you going to follow this evolution in fighting when challenged with fireballs in a 3D environment? I await the answer.
Impulse Gamer (Mar, 2012)
Although the game is not Tekken, CAPCOM have done a good job at porting these characters to the Street Fighter franchise and if you're hankering for a decent fighter, than you should definitely check out Street Fighter x Tekken which is the best fun I've had since... err... Ultimate Street Fighter vs Marvel. It may not have pushed the genre too much but at the end of the day, it offers an honest fighter that most gamers will enjoy!
ZTGameDomain (Mar 13, 2012)
Street Fighter X Tekken is easily the best fighting game I have played since Mortal Kombat landed last year. Sure, the story mode is a little contrived, and the gem system mildly flawed for tournament play, but the sheer amount of everything else completely outweighs it. I have been wrapped up in learning the combos and getting that sense I had back in the arcade days, when I actually wanted to master each character. The game is great for both Tekken and Street Fighter fans, and being a critic of the former, I am much more interested to see how Namco handles their end of the bargain now. If you like fighting games, this is a no-brainer. Street Fighter X Tekken will easily be my fighting game addiction of 2012, unless of course Rare shocks the world with a “killer” reboot.
Eurogamer.pt (Mar 12, 2012)
Chapeau!
IGN (Mar 05, 2012)
The fast pace of the combat and fluidity of the tag mechanics truly bring Street Fighter X Tekken to the top of the fighting game heap. The Gem system is a fine addition that manages to do something daring by offering some new strategy to the fighting, and the two rosters complement each other very well. Street Fighter X Tekken is a fantastic fighting game that nails the basic fighting mechanics while daring to take a few risks with the formula as we know it; the pressure is on Namco Bandai to deliver something better with Tekken X Street Fighter.
Game Informer Magazine (Mar 06, 2012)
If you’re a casual player looking for some throwaway fighting fun, this isn’t for you—especially if you like playing online against strangers. On the other hand, moderate to hardcore players are going to find a lot to absorb in Street Fighter X Tekken, and players with patience will be rewarded for it.
Gameplay (Benelux) (Mar 31, 2012)
GameSpot (Mar 05, 2012)
Street Fighter X Tekken provides complex combat in an inviting package. The fighting genre needs to become accessible to a wider range of players, and this game takes an important step in the right direction. Accessibility that doesn't come at the expense of variety is a smart move and sets this fun and flashy fighter apart from the pack.
TotalPlayStation (Apr 06, 2012)
Despite the grim picture I seem to paint from the tournament side, there are actually tons of things for fight nerds like myself to get excited over in Street Fighter x Tekken. No other modern fighting game rewards good old fashioned footsies quite as much, allowing you to turn that game of inches, into brutal miles for your opponent. With the right spacing and timing, air to air counter hits can lead to devastating combos. And the whole Tekken side of the cast is brimming with technicality and power. Steve's flicker cancel combos and counter hit setups, Kaz's 1 frame electric wind god fists, Xiaoyu's phoenix stance shenanigans...there are some real depths ripe for the plumbing here. SFxT may already be a good video game, but it's also just a good patch or two away from being a great competitive fighting game.
PSX Extreme (Mar 17, 2012)
Nevertheless, Street Fighter X Tekken is a really solid fighter with all sorts of flash and fan appeal. Many might question the new Pandora and Gem features, and the final boss is a colossal pain in the ass, but there’s no denying the extreme responsiveness, fluidity, and depth of the gameplay. It’s satisfying to the nth degree (if you’re willing to invest the practice time), and playing with others is always a blast and a half. The production values are high and the entire presentation is borderline glorious. And please, bear in mind that some of the drawbacks listed here are very personal.
GameTrailers (Mar 05, 2012)
Despite a confluence of uncertainty and doubt, Street Fighter x Tekken stands tall as a worthy fighter that ultimately succeeds in bringing the next step in Street Fighter’s ongoing evolution, though it certainly isn’t for everyone. It has little to offer fighting game fans bridled with brand fatigue and even less to Tekken players still wary of polarizing mechanics and the tricky jump to 2D. But in terms of keeping pace with innovation and bringing something new to the table, Street Fighter x Tekken duly makes the effort worth the while.
GamingTrend (Mar 26, 2012)
Capcom has taken advantage of their crossover opportunities, and usually the results have been great. However, Street Fighter X Tekken is frustrating. The actual fighting is great, and the roster is enjoyable. The Tekken characters are represented well. You wouldn’t think that the wait times would be that big of a deal, but it is a noticable amount of time waiting for each match. The online experience is incredibly flawed, making it not worth playing. If you can get past the wait times and don’t mind playing against the AI, then Street Fighter X Tekken is an enjoyable game and a worthy addition to your collection. I would just recommend having a fightstick if you are serious about playing.
COGConnected / Canadian Online Gamers Network (Mar 17, 2012)
Street Fighter X Tekken does a wonderful job at advancing the fighting game genre. The range of customizations, crossover moves and new combos is impressive. The fighting is enjoyable and the variety of ways in which you can punish your opponent is endless. This being said, I took issue with the exploitable imbalances, “infinite combos”, some of the lag and choppiness; and elements of the games sound did not work. I cannot help but think the game could have benefited from a few more months in the shop. Nevertheless, Street Fighter X Tekken is still a highly enjoyable game and one that should be considered a very good fighting game experience.
NZGamer (Mar 12, 2012)
Overall, Street Fighter X Tekken brings it in some places and slides by in others, yet it manages to be one of the best crossover fighting games in recent memory. It was a pleasant surprise to see how well the Tekken fighters made the transition into 2D, especially given the slower pace of their original series.
411mania.com (Mar 19, 2012)
Street Fighter X Tekken is an excellent fighting game that has some really creative and fun additions to the gameplay, but will give many players fighting game fatigue. On one hand the Gem system and Pandora Mode are creative, but on the other hand the basic fighting mechanics are extremely similar to the three editions of Street Fighter IV released over the last few years. Again the character roster is large and the characters are fun to play, but the tag-in system doesn’t feel fresh since Tekken has recently re-released Tekken Tag Tournament in HD and has been promoting and showing off Tekken Tag Tournament 2 for a while now. Street Fighter X Tekken will satisfy Street Fighter fans, but it may be time for Capcom to put down the Street Fighter series for a little bit to freshen up the gameplay experience and focus on some of their other fighting franchises.
videogamer.com (Mar 05, 2012)
As an experiment and a sequel, though, Street Fighter X Tekken is still a resounding and admirable success, and further proof than Ono-san is hiding true genius behind those scruffy cords and pudgy cheeks. In this battle of Street Fighter and Tekken, Capcom has landed the first knockout blow. I can't wait to see how Namco responds.
TheSixthAxis (Mar 05, 2012)
Capcom has often been accused of iterating on its fighting games too much, with SFXT that’s definitely not the case. This is a fighting game which truly innovates in a number of key areas. It attempts to make it easier for newcomers to find a path into the myriad options and tactical load-outs without sacrificing any of the complexities which could make this a viable long-term option for the tournament scene. There’s only so much a developer can do within a genre, of course, but this feels like the first time in a while that big changes have been made with such resounding success.
Gamereactor (Sweden) (Mar 05, 2012)
Games TM (Mar 08, 2012)
While not without its problems and questionable design decisions, Street Fighter X Tekken is miraculous in that it even works at all. It simply shouldn’t. Namco has the tougher job when it comes to filling out the fireballs and crazy mix-up games of characters designed to operate on a 2D plane, sure, but you can’t take anything away from Capcom’s efforts simply because some mountains are bigger than others. Like so many modern fighters, there’s a decent argument to be made that SFXT could use some more single player content – it offers little beyond the nonsensical narrative of Arcade mode and various missions and trials – but as we’ve said of other fighters before, it’s a multiplayer-focused game. AI will never truly match the nuances, habits and mistakes of a human player, so why would anyone buy a fighter exclusively to play it single player? That’s like buying a Frisbee to chuck around in the park on your own.
Spazio Games (Mar 09, 2012)
Digital Spy (Mar 13, 2012)
In closing, Street Fighter X Tekken is much more than an amalgamation of two classic series. The game builds on Street Fighter IV's award-winning formula by introducing innovative new mechanics, and the result is one of the most tactically rich fighters on the market. We can only hope that Namco's Tekken X Street Fighter lives up to these high standards when it sees the light of day.
D+PAD Magazine (Mar 24, 2012)
Street Fighter x Tekken was a gamble for both Capcom and Namco Bandai. Had Capcom got the mixture wrong, it would have not only sullied its own credentials but that of (arguably) the two greatest fighting franchises of all time. This isn’t the case. Capcom has delivered on the potential of the cross-over template admirably and created a game that’s hugely engaging, always entertaining and feels like an easily justifiable extension to both Street Fighter and Tekken brands. It is disappointing that the online element isn’t yet up to scratch, but when this issue is resolved Street Fighter x Tekken should have no problems standing on its own two feet.
Splitkick (Mar 19, 2012)
Even with its noticeable problems, and a fiasco at launch over DLC, I would still recommend SFXT. It is a fundamentally sound fighting game that introduces some unique (if slightly flawed) mechanics to the genre, and serves up a system that is both accessible for newcomers and deep enough for die hard veterans. Both the character and background animations are fantastic, the cheesy voice acting is on point, and the soundtrack is bar-none the best I’ve heard in a fighting game in years. If you’re getting tired of SF4, and Soul Caliber V or Mortal Kombat aren’t up your alley, then this is one you won’t want to pass up.
Cheat Code Central (Mar 06, 2012)
Overall, Street Fighter X Tekken is a decent value. Its roster is huge, its mechanics are interesting, and it will certainly keep you playing for quite a while. Will it dethrone Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition Version 2012 as the king of fighting games? I'm not entirely sure about that. There will probably be more than enough people put off by the more aggressive gameplay to split the fighting game fan base. Outside of these factors, Street Fighter X Tekken is well worth its price tag. It's a great game that could have been done better, but wasn't.
PlayStation Universe (Apr 11, 2012)
If Tekken characters aren’t your jam—even though they are now essentially re-skinned Street Fighter characters—or if you simply still have fun playing Street Fighter 4 (or its “Super” or “Arcade Edition” increments) then you don’t necessarily need to make the jump to SF X T. It’s fun, but some fans will no doubt prefer Capcom’s last Street Fighter game. However, if you’ve been clamoring for more after the recent glut of 2D gameplay fighting games, then you’ll be safe in picking up Street Fighter X Tekken – just make sure to play offline.
Push Square (Mar 06, 2012)
There's plenty to enjoy in SFxTK: the cast is second-to-none, it's vibrant and never takes itself too seriously, but you almost wish it would. There was an opportunity for a truly great technical fighter in combining Street Fighter and Tekken, but it's denied in favour of a strategy-light, juggle-heavy scrapper that — like Capcom's other cross-company crossover all those years ago — never quite satisfies.
Gameplanet (Mar 16, 2012)
This is no doubt a product of the fact that, as part of the deal that secured this title, Namco are supposedly at work on their version of the cross-over – Tekken X Street Fighter. While there is no release date (and indeed little in the way of progress being made according to recent reports), it looks set to present the Tekken take on the crossover. The result will be another title for the fans, and another revenue stream for the developers, but it seems that this has been at the expense of undertaking the sort of collaborative effort that could have made this title something great.
Giant Bomb (Mar 19, 2012)
It's a shame that the online is so off, because like I said before, the core of Street Fighter X Tekken is really cool. Even if you decide to ignore the Tekken characters, the fighters you know well from previous Capcom fighting games feel different because of the game's juggle system. And the Tekken fighters bring the whole thing up to a rather large roster of playable characters, giving you plenty--almost too much, actually--to learn. With cleaner online play it'd be easier to recommend, but if you don't mind an extra helping of Internet weirdness or have enough locals nearby to let you compete offline, it can be a hell of a good time.
