Extreme Gamer (Oct 29, 2010)
There isn’t really anything that I can say that I personally dislike about the game. The length, difficulty, and corny story will turn a lot of people off, but the incredible gameplay and thrill of climbing the leaderboards is more than enough to keep this gamer engaged. This is the game I’ve been waiting for. Vanquish has taken my dream of integrating old-school gameplay mentality into a next-gen environment come true. My wife would like to personally thank SEGA for the multitude of hours I will be away from her playing this game. If you’re a hardcore gamer that used to spend hours at the arcade trying to beat someone else’s high score on 1943 or Galaga, or something of that nature, please do yourself a favour and grab Vanquish.
Vanquish is all about carnage and violence at 100 MPH. For those who love shooters, action, mechs, anime, robots, cheesy villains, over-the-top plots, or girls in short skirts, Vanquish is your game. Have fun and enjoy. There probably won’t be another one like this for awhile.
Gamezone (Germany) (Oct 27, 2010)
We Got This Covered (Nov 04, 2010)
Overall, Vanquish’s good aspects outweigh the bad, and I would consider it a buy. The gameplay is fast and furious, emphasizing a more active role in combat. The story may be nonsensical, but it doesn’t really have to make sense. Aside from the length, the only thing that I can see people having an issue with is the over the top Japanese styling. Given the genre, third person shooter, this can be rather off putting. There is a demo for the game so if you’re still on the fence about it, give the demo a try. Overall though, I think this is one worth buying.

GamingEvolution (Nov 14, 2010)
Vanquish is one of those experiences where you simply don’t want to put the controller down until you’re finished with the campaign. Clocking in at around 6 to 8 hours the experience within Vanquish is relatively short, though during those 6 to 8 hours, you are on the thrill ride of your life. From an immersive environment to well-thought out gameplay mechanics and execution, Platinum Games has set a new benchmark for what excites players within the world of First-Person Shooters. It is unsure at this point if we will ever see any more titles follow in a similar vein to Vanquish; and whether they do or not, one thing is definitely true… a new genre has been born (Japanese style action with Western infused shooting). For those who haven’t yet experience Vanquish, need to put down that sandwich and rush out to your nearest retailer and pick this game up. It’s well worth your time.
Gamer.nl (Oct 22, 2010)
GameSpot (Oct 19, 2010)
You may run into a few glitches, which is unfortunate considering this package's overall elegance. Several levels require you to defeat every enemy before moving on, yet it's possible for a foe to get knocked back and become impossible to hit--an occasion that can be corrected only by restarting from the last checkpoint. Fortunately, repeating the section you just played isn't punishment in Vanquish--it's your chance to reexperience the unabashed joy of making robots explode in a tempest of sights and sounds. Whether you're gunning through the seven-hour campaign (sadly, on the short side) or tackling the entertaining challenge rooms (there is no multiplayer), it's hard not to get taken in by the constant exuberance. Vanquish feels exactly right. It's fast and furious. It's totally entertaining. It's got style oozing from every pore. Vanquish is all game and no filler, and that's exactly what makes it one of the most gleeful and memorable experiences of the year.
Play.tm (Nov 11, 2010)
While we consider whether these issues threaten to stifle Vanquish's cool as fuck spirit, some more beefy explosions go off and we realise we're having far too much fun to notice. Vanquish is exactly the kind of videogame-induced adrenaline rush gamers are looking for. It's like watching a fireworks displays while strapped to one of the rockets. Make sure you check it out - this is a ride you don't want to miss.
The Game Hoard (Mar 01, 2018)
Vanquish rushed into new territory for the shooting genre, but just like its hero, it had a few too many things in its path to reach its potential. The cover shooter gameplay is still a bit basic if you don’t engage the dashing and time slowing, but the weapon upgrade system and a few new devices means it at least has something to hold you between the insane flips and intense action scenes. For a short experience it reuses some things a bit too much, but the areas stay fresh and exciting.

Gamona (Oct 27, 2010)
gamrReview (Nov 10, 2010)
However, if you were following Vanquish's development, then the absence of multiplayer in favor for a richer, more involving single player experience isn't exactly news. Even with its repetitive nature and lack of weapon variety, Vanquish solidly delivers a stylish, intense adventure that provides a decent 6-8 hour campaign and a wide array of challenge missions that benefit from remaining in the singleplayer realm. Yet, without any well-crafted multiplayer options, it's hard to justify a $60 expenditure for the more competitive gamer, and it prevents a great game from becoming one of the best of the year.
IGN (Oct 18, 2010)
Vanquish is a stylish, spectacular looking game with great gunplay and some stunning set pieces. Although the game's story and character development pale in comparison to the action, I had a great time with Vanquish from the in-game tutorial all the way to the ending credits. Even though Mikami's latest creation is difficult at times, players looking for a highly entertaining shooter should look no further. Vanquish will keep you on the edge of your multi-thruster booster seat.
Giant Bomb (Nov 02, 2010)
An enthusiasm for accelerated popcorn sci-fi action makes this latest ride from PlatinumGames, however brief, an exhilarating one.
GamingLives (Nov 16, 2010)
I should hate Vanquish, and I know a lot of people have slated it for one reason or another, but it tickled me and made me want to keep going back to the checkpoint rather than throwing the controller to the ground in frustration. That is, as far as I'm concerned, the sign of a good game. If I had to score it on reflection alone, I'd give it 6/10 or perhaps even 7/10 because there wasn't anything that made me lie awake at night thinking "I could be playing Vanquish rather than wasting my time sleeping!" but, during gameplay, this gets a serious 9/10 for me. Elena Ivanova, on the other hand, I'd only give her one.
Thunderbolt Games (Feb 09, 2011)
‘Awesome’ is a word that gets bandied around a lot, but consider how often people consider its literal meaning - to genuinely inspire awe. Few games manage such a feat; either due to ambitions outstripping the finished product, or perhaps technical hindrances diminishing the effect. Vanquish manages in many ways to be quite literally awesome though; from the bombastic battles you partake in, through its outstanding technical performance, brilliantly ridiculous cutscenes and superb twists on an established genre. It’s a relatively slight, shallow experience, but it delivers more concentrated action and entertainment in those few hours than most of its peers can muster in two or three times as long. Kick-ARS indeed.
Brash Games (Feb 06, 2011)
In all Vanquish is a game that, despite its many niggles, makes up for them by redefining the meaning ‘cool’ and by being a seriously exciting and addictive third-person shooter that is worth far more recognition than it seems to have received. Vanquish easily makes it into one of my personal favourites.
411mania.com (Nov 08, 2010)
Vanquish isn’t for everyone, but it is one of the most stylish and best looking games I’ve played all year. The action is fast and frantic and unlike anything else I’ve played. Despite the ridiculous speed that would even have Sonic jealous, the cover system works perfectly. The great gameplay manages to cover up what is a bare-bones story that does little more than explain what’s happening. The lack of multiplayer hurts the replayability of the game, and it’s going to be hard to justify spending $60 for such a limited title. That being said, the game is one of the most fun I’ve played all year and if you have the cash, you should definitely check it out. A demo is up if you’d like to get a taste of the game before putting your hard earned money down.
Krawall Gaming Network (Oct 19, 2010)
Gaming since 198x (Feb 19, 2011)
