Pirates of the Caribbean may not be the most original or fine-tuned title out there for PSP, but as a licensed pairing with the third movie the game still serves its purpose, as the design combines the age-old art of action titles with the music, presentation, and characters of Pirates of the Caribbean. At no time during our adventure we’re our minds collectively blown, but there were certainly high points during the game, making it worthy for a rental or used purchase. The PSP version stands up to its PS2 counterpart nicely, dropping only a few of the finer textures and some more subtle animation in the process. On the gameplay side, Pirates is virtually unchanged, though you’ll need to sacrifice the “Challenge Mode” for 2-4 player Ad Hoc and game sharing with versions of poker, hearts, and pirate’s dice. Still, the PSP version offers nearly as much content as the other titles available, and keeps the experience in tact.

In the end, the Pirates 3 game comes out being the best of the movie-game trilogies, but that isn't saying much. Where as Shrek the Third and Spider-Man 3 were downright bad, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is bordering on the edge of mediocrity. With a bit more polish, and a slightly more engaging experience, this could've gone down as being one of the best movie-games in a long time. Unfortunately, At World's End cannot pull through on the strength of its pretty visuals and nice audio alone. There simply isn't much to see that's worth the $40 ticket. If you're really curious, rent it first.

When it comes to complimenting the movie experience, the PSP version of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End appears to provide the best experience. You come for the mildly entertaining main quest and you stay for the mini-games - all for the thrifty $30 price point. Don't worry - despite being half the price of the supposed 'ultimate experience' on next-gen consoles, you come out a winner shopping on the cheap for your Pirates experience. And what's more pirate than getting more for less?

"Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" é daqueles games de ação que se joga numa tacada. A aventura é relativamente curta, mas mesmo assim não consegue escapar da repetição. Existem outros modos de jogo, mas nenhum é particularmente interessante. No geral, o Xbox 360 leva vantagem, pela produção e conquistas, mas ainda oferece muito pouco pelo seu preço. Nesse quesito, o PC e o PSP saem mais em conta, pois custam a metade das edições para consoles de nova geração.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is not the game we hoped it to be - and certainly doesn't fare too well compared to the PS3 version which we are enjoying a bit more. If you are a fan of the movies then you should get some enjoyment out of this PSP game (or indeed the game on the many other platforms - with more reviews to come soon). The developers have kept to the second and third movies storyline and added in a few neat locations to explore and fill in some events not seen on the silver screen. Sadly unlike the brilliant movies this game is quite average.

Die 360-Fassung des Weltenendes war schon keine Softwareperle, die Versionen für Wii, PC und PSP glänzen genauso wenig. Speziell die Wii-Fassung verschreckt jeden Jungpiraten mit einer Steuerung, die gleichsam aufgezwungen wie schlecht umgesetzt wirkt: Die vielen, ausufernd langen Arenakämpfe bergen aufgrund der störrischen Bewegungsabfragen erhebliches Risiko von Hand- und Armverletzungen, die Säbelkontrolle scheint mehr einem Zufallsgenerator als den Aktionen des Spielers zu unterliegen. Am PC sieht’s speziell mit der Tastatur nicht viel besser aus, an der PSP schrecken die teilweise scheußlich designten Figuren ab. Insgesamt auch hier kein völliges Absaufen, aber auch alles andere als ein abendfüllender Spaß.

Wer also nicht unbedingt zu den harten Fans der Filme zählt, könnte vom hier Gebotenen ein wenig enttäuscht sein, zu durchschnittlich präsentieren sich die Abenteuer von Captain Jack Sparrow als Spiel für die diversen Geräte. Wer die Kinoreihe aber mag, der wird auch beim Spielen auf seine Kosten kommen. Denn vor allem auf der Xbox 360 kommt inhaltlich eine ordentliche Ladung Johnny Depp rüber. Das erfreut doch immerhin das Piratenherz und ist zumindest "befriedigend".

When it's all said and done, At World's End is a very by-the-book approach to a movie-based game. It has, and lets you play as, all the characters you'd want to play; it doesn't deviate from the movies' plots too much; and it takes you to many of the locations you see in the films. While those are good things, the game really would have benefited by taking some risks. The biggest problem is that you're playing as a cool character in an exotic location, but you're not doing anything interesting, just running around picking up items and hitting the attack button endlessly. Even if you're a huge fan of the Pirates trilogy, you'll probably want to pass on At World's End, especially the Wii version due to its terrible control scheme.

Une version vraiment trop convenue pour attirer notre attention, malgré toute la sympathie qu'on peut avoir pour le film. Cette adaptation manque de punch et repose presque entièrement sur des combats très peu convaincants. Et même si un effort a été fait pour renforcer la mise en scène et la fidélité au long-métrage, l'approche ludique est mal pensée quand elle n'est pas carrément affligeante.

There's nothing terribly wrong with At World's End but, equally, there's little here to recommend. And that's particularly irritating because, initially, there's an undeniable feeling that you're embarking on a great adventure – the game opens impressively and does as decent a job of communicating its potential as it does of subsequently squandering it. But you'll only find that out through extended play, of course. Another case of time altering perception, then.

What Pirates of the Caribbean lacks more than anything are two things: cohesion and challenge. I wouldn't complain about the generic nature of the gameplay if it were challenging, but it has to be challenging in a good way. The kind of challenge that makes you want to do better next time. All I could hope was that there wouldn't be a "next time." Rent this if you must.
