The use of such compilations keeps wondering around in my head. None of the fourteen games manages to justify a purchase and the most well-known titles are based on the sub-par SNES versions. Also the extras won't get you interested and only the over-nostalgic gamer or ultimate collector might find this one interesting.

Fourteen superb EA games from the '90s updated for the PSP, including classics like Mutant League Football and the Road Rash games.

Syndicate? Road Rash? Desert Strike?

There's not much to EA Replay, and even though it's going for $19.99, it's really not for anyone who isn't specifically jonesing to play one or more of these games again. While one or two of these games are genuine classics, the 16-bit stuff just doesn't seem to hold up as well as some other old video games, making even the highlights on this disc tough to come back to.
Worth Playing (Mar 20, 2007)
Congratulations, Electronic Arts. You've made me want you to start making Madden games again. Is that what you were aiming for? Ah well. I suppose it could have been worse. You could have included Shaq-Fu. Maybe you're just waiting until EA Replay 2.
Video Game Talk (Jan 25, 2007)
Overall EA Replay feels kind of sloppy. Why some of these titles were picked and not others is beyond my comprehension. Honestly, who wants to go back and play Budokan or Virtual Pinball? Not me. Personal preferences aside control issues strike a good majority of these titles and beyond that many of these games just aren't fun to play irregardless. If you are a lover of all things retro then you'll probably get a kick out of these games but if you have been spoiled by other much better releases (see Capcom Classics Remixed) then there's not much point to this one.

The real gem, though, is Mutant League Football, which more than makes up for the absence of any of the Madden titles because it's better than all of them. Sure, the American Football playbooks are pretty rudimentary, but the special moves are awesome, from wide receivers chucking bombs, or farting on opponents, to bribing or killing the ref and confusing your opponent by reversing their controls. It's still the game that sees most and it goes some way in making up for a miserly selection of games, cobbled together with little care. Chuck in the potentially commute-consuming Ultima, and the solid retro charms of Road Rash and Desert/Jungle Strike, and you can just about forget the rest of the dross that's on here.

A good retro collection brings together a variety of fun, classic games and pays close attention to their proper presentation. Maybe it even throws in some bonus features. Unfortunately, EA Replay is not a good retro collection. It sounds pretty cool at first, with a selection of 14 classics and pseudo-classics seldom seen in previous compilations. But as it happens, almost every game has a major caveat or shortcoming, and you'll find better presentation in a random backyard wrestling match.
