One of the most enjoyable soccer games you will play on your PSP, 2006 FIFA World Cup is the perfect traveling companion for any sports fan. While the game concentrates on this year’s World Cup and its qualifying teams, you’ll still have a great time playing through this tournament. If you love a good portable sports game and/or are a soccer aficionado, this is the game you will want to buy.

Game Chronicles (May 28, 2006)
I find it interesting that this game concept would only work for something as trendy as soccer. If you tried to release an NFL game that had nothing but the playoffs and the Super Bowl you would have a lot of dusty games on the store shelf, but for some reason, soccer has an almost magical grip on its fans, and the World Cup is nearly as iconic as the Olympics for many. When it comes to soccer on the PSP it's either this or World Tour Soccer 06. Only 2006 FIFA World Cup manages to capture all of that magic and recreate the pageantry of the World Cup better than any World Cup game before it, and it puts it in the palm of your hand.

2006 FIFA World Cup isn't an awful PSP game by any means. It's just not a great game. The graphics are fairly decent, and the presentation feels like a nice adaptation of the PS2 game. Also, the AI is spiced up and relentless, which presents a nice challenge to franchise vets. However, the controls don't feel like they're adequate enough to stand up to the fast-paced action that the CPU or a multiplayer opponent can deliver. The multiplayer is both good and bad, at about 40/60 in favor of bad. On one hand, the games ran smoothly enough to go the entire match without dropping, but they had some occasional lag, few people seem to be playing online at all, and the EA Nation login is fairly annoying. If you've got World Cup fever, and the only prescription is a real license, then go with 2006 FIFA World Cup. Otherwise, stick to Winning Eleven 9, which is quickly becoming the standard for soccer on PSP.

The PSP's infamous nub isn't as deadly to gameplay here as it is in shooters, but it's still not a real analog stick, and that hurts your ability to take advantage of any of the advanced stuff as well. You never feel really certain that you've given the command you want, or set your on-field strategy correctly. Overall, it's a great pick-up-and-play game, but I don't want to give up depth just because a game is portable.
