Gangs of London has a lot going for it. The length of the missions works well for a portable game, and having relatively short load times helps. Yet there are still a few issues that prevent it from being a great game instead of a good game. The missions on foot and in vehicles are varied well, even if they have similar objectives. If you want to get into some mob action for your PSP, this definitely fits the bill.

Not to say that Gangs of London is a poor game, but an uninspiring venture. The credits and opening sequences are enough to get anyone excited, and the game's special modes show some creativity. In the end, however, mediocrity follows almost every mode with the exception of a few pub games. If the search to out-GTA GTA could cease now, I'd be very happy. Trying to design a mission-based game is hard enough and when you try to incorporate driving, squad combat and mini-games into the formula, the soup becomes a stew. Or, the steak dinner becomes tapas fare. Gangs of London is a big, beautiful mess, kind of like most of my girlfriends from college. But let's save that for another time, okay?

That really describes Gangs of London: It gives the player a lot to do, even if not all of it is 90-thrills-a-minute, balls-to-the-wall fun. I had a decent time taking my gang through story mode, with the bonus stuff filling in when the grind got too tedious. In effect, Gangs of London is a solid portable time-waster. It's not going to dethrone the Grand Theft Auto games anytime soon, but there's something to be said for those thuggish accents and moody streets. There are worse ways to spend your time between stints in the big house. Or the Tower of London. Or wherever it is they put criminals over there.

Gaming Target (Mar 14, 2007)
Gangs of London had a lot going for it in reconstructing a virtual London on the PSP, offering more than enough levels and mini-games and using an otherwise untouched theme involving UK criminals. But like The Getaway and The Getaway: Black Monday, this portable descendant doesn’t feature innovative gameplay and gets boring after you’re forced to repeat the same type of missions multiple times. Gang Battle, the pub mini-games and, to a lesser extent, free-roaming mode make this title fun for a bit, just not enough to justify a copy at full price. It’s best to go with the more varied gameplay experience of The Warriors, which debuted at half the price on PSP.

Gangs of London isn’t a terrible game, but it doesn’t do enough right to keep you interested. The gameplay is miserable with sloppy combat and driving controls. Add to that the fact the missions are terribly short, dull and repetitive and Gangs doesn’t provide enough interesting opportunities. That doesn’t mean it’s all bad though as the graphics are decent, voice acting is impressive and there is a lot to do. Nevertheless, it’s hard to avoid the fact that not enough goes right in Gangs of London to make it worth a full purchase price.

Irgendwie hat mir „The Getaway“ damals gefallen.

Gangs of London provides a lot of gameplay and more modes of play than you’ll find in just about any other PSP game out there. However, a lot of gameplay doesn’t do you much good if it’s not very exciting and sometimes downright frustrating. Check it out if you’re a diehard The Getaway fan, but otherwise it’s hard to recommend to most other gamers.

It's hard to recommend Gangs of London as a straight ahead buy, it's on the shelf, but it's not jumping in the bag. Gangs of London incongruity between style, substance, and basic gaming mechanics is disappointing. I wouldn't refer to Gangs of London as bad game because there are several redeeming qualities about this English gangster that I love, it's just that Gangs doesn't live up to expectations and feels a little short on reaching its full potential.

AceGamez (2006)
Gangs of London is a mere shadow of the game it could have been. The concept of splitting up the gameplay into a myriad of mini-games and separate just doesn't work and just about all of it is inexplicably boring. No matter how you judge it, based on graphics, audio or gameplay, the final verdict remains the same - dull. The fact that the game is boring also quenches the need for a replay, which will leave it collecting dust on a shelf, all hope of a virtual visit to the proud capital forgotten. My advice? Spare yourself this example of mediocrity and get Vice City Stories instead if you're craving a portable free-roaming adventure, because Gangs of London can be summed up in a single word - 'blah'.

So, Gangs of London is an odd overall package. You have a story mode that isn't much fun (but also isn't entirely devoid of entertainment), and a collection of mini games that actually aren't that mini at all. Is it worth $40? Maybe. If you're a fan of Risk, casual-style minigames, and challenging, oldschool action.

Gangs of London is a game ruined by terrible controls, poor cut scenes and a lack of polish. There are plenty of additional game modes however most of these are hampered by the issues from the main game. Sadly The Getaway clone can't even match the original, and still falls well short of Rockstar's GTA titles. One only for die-hard fans of the genre.

GameSpot (Oct 03, 2006)
Regardless of your affinity for British profanity, Gangs of London isn't a game worth playing. The mission designs go beyond pedestrian into the realm of actively unpleasant less than an hour into the experience, and all the ancillary modes in the world can't make up for weak controls and bland gameplay. The truly perplexing thing about the game is that many of these issues have been around the Getaway series for years now and are somehow made significantly worse in this game. Unless you're absolutely desperate for an expensive parlor-game simulator for your PSP, Gangs of London is best left on the shelf.

GameTrailers (Dec 06, 2006)
Gangs of London gets the portable game design thing absolutely right, with lots of choices and play sessions that are over relatively quickly. But the decent collection of distractions doesn’t make up for the awful controls.

Fragland.net (Jan 29, 2007)
But then again, what's the use of having a huge world if it's not enjoyable. Everything in this game lacks good ideas and finishing, save for the voice-acting. There are tons of great games on the PSP now, so you shouldn't bother with this one. If you're looking for a great free-roaming action game, just go buy Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories.

Eurogamer.net (UK) (Sep 07, 2006)
It's a shame, however, that these modes feel a bit tacked-on. The presentation of Gang Battle is especially rudimentary, and the pool games could have done with better camera control, for example. Indeed, if they'd received the same presentational polish as the main game, Gangs of London could have been a resounding success. Without it, they're not quite worth the two-score saucepan lid you'll have to shell out if you want to buy the game. So Gangs of London is unlikely to be the killer app that gets people swapping their DS for a PSP. But if you're looking for a compilation of pub games, and a simple, quirky, turn-based strategy, you could definitely do worse. Just wait till the price comes down to a pony.

Gangs of London is a bit of a disappointment (I say “bit” since the console versions weren’t too hot, so the game really didn’t have far to fall). While this game seemed to retain most of the problems that pushed the console games down, here’s hoping they manage to fix the controls, lame AI and boring story mode next round.

GamingExcellence (Nov 06, 2006)
What really stands out with Gangs of London is how much better it could have been. There are brief moments when it shines as a fun little portable title, but those moments only occur in very short bursts. Any amount of time spent with the game will likely have players frustrated by the mind-boggling linear format in light of its competition as well it's technical shortcomings. I can hardly suggest a weekend rental.

Unless you’re a diehard fan of The Getaway or Asian/Russian/Pakistani/cockney/Yardy gangsters, you’d be better off leaving this one alone. If you really, really need to buy this, don’t say you haven’t been warned. At least you’ll have the minigames to ease the pain.

IGN (Oct 13, 2006)
I have to admit to being rather disappointed in Gangs of London. There was a lot of promise with the game, particularly because it touted five perspectives on taking over the city, as well as a game sharing feature that would let friends play a demo that would be unique to their personal PSP. But after playing the actual title, there's no way that I'd want to subject friends to the bland missions, continually infuriating AI and gameplay issues and repetitive story structure. While Gang Battle and some of the Pub and Free Roam modes are engaging for a while, they won't make up for the exceedingly sloppy play of the Story Mode.

In the past couple of months, we have begun to see a movement in PSP games from Sony. Packaged along with the actual games are a ton of mini games that act as a distraction and little else. NBA 07 from a couple weeks ago did it with the Carnival games and now Gangs of London does the same here. The difference between the two is that NBA 07’s core gameplay was sound and enjoyable, while Gangs of London is as close to broken as it gets. Anyone looking for a virtual 8-ball or darts simulator will find it here, but they certainly aren’t worth the 40 dollar price of admission.

Game Revolution (Jun 10, 2006)
Sure, I’m busting its balls, but Gangs of London isn’t all terrible. It’s just really easy to pick on the bad A.I. and repetitive gameplay. The driving segments handle well, and because it’s so easy, the Story campaigns always move at a brisk pace. But Gangs of London should be insane, stylish and hard with a kooky plot and high-octane violence. Instead the experience is awkward, wooden and dull - British in all the wrong ways.

Like the first two Getaway titles, Gangs of London is a missed opportunity. It seems Studio London has ignored everything anybody disliked about the two Getaway titles and just included the problems in Gangs of London. This results in poor AI, a terrible aiming system, repetitive missions and a sporadic frame-rate. Gangs of London is strictly for fans of the series, it's just far too broken to be an enjoyable game.

videogamer.com (Sep 21, 2006)
Alas, I can't simply ignore Gangs of London, much as I'd like to. When you boot up your PSP and you side-step the main story for the mini-games, you know you've got a problem. Gangs of London is a poor attempt at a game that could have been so much more. Let's hope Sony has a good hard look at the series before the inevitable sequel rears its, hopefully not ugly, head.

If the review isn’t clear enough at this juncture, allow for a censored statement more apt to Gangs of London, and know before reading it that this is not an exaggeration of opinion or the game’s insulting content: "Don't be a stupid c**t, take the f***ing advice given in this b*****d review and don’t waste a f***ing penny of your money on Gangs of London!"

Defunct Games (Nov 28, 2006)
The biggest problem with Gangs of London is not the terrible controls or the boring missions; it's that the entire package is no fun to play. With games like Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories on the PSP it's hard to recommend a game like Gangs of London. Heck, it would be hard to recommend this game even if these games didn't exist. After three failed versions of The Getaway one has to wonder what Sony is thinking, I certainly hope that they aren't planning on shoving these titles down our throats each and every time they have a new system to promote. Avoid this game, just like you avoided all of the other games in this series.

Rent Gangs of London for some pub games on the road, but please do not encourage developers to continue putting wretch like this on a system with so much more potential.

Two out of 10 may be a harsh score, but Gangs of London is a truly awful experience. Put simply, it's a portable piece of ugliness that lacks any humility or wit. It is singularly unpleasant in the way it handles its subject matter, and lacks the style or panache to carry its inadequacies with any dignity. It manages to take all of the complaints leveled against its forebear The Getaway, and focus them with laser-like precision into an experience devoid of fun.
