DescriptionThe Hilton Family is an educational simulation used as the fourth component for the training of new employees at the US Hilton Garden Inn hotels. Limited at 500 copies, the game was not sold in retail and requires a specific memory stick in order to launch the game next to the UMD disc, to prevent use outside of the training facilities. The game is played inside a recreated Hilton Garden Inn through a first-person perspective. At the reception desk a name can be chosen along with one of four roles that represent the game modes: housekeeping, food & beverage, guest service and engineering. Each role has the player perform a number of tasks that are rated with a SALT (Satisfaction and Loyalty Tracking) score, compared against the real SALT ratings. The SALT score is based on the customer's appreciation and patience, and further affected through the choices in branching dialogue trees with the customers and the time to complete the tasks. Next to the main game there is a tutorial where the tasks are explained.
For housekeeping, the player goes from room to room to clean them. Everything needs to be cleaned, furniture needs to be put back in its proper place, curtains need to be opened, carpets are vacuumed and redundant hangers should be removed from closets. For food & beverage the player needs to greet people and serve them drinks and food. Orders are stored on a computer where the check and receipts can be printed as well. Various items such as dishes and coffee can be taken from the kitchen to bring them to customers. One item to take into account is the temperature of the food. Dishes needs to be carried over quickly to avoid serving a cold plate. There are different sessions such as breakfast and dinner. Guest service takes place at the reception desk. The player needs to check in customers, answer questions and book rooms. Items need to be restocked and engineering problems need to be reported. The final mode is engineering. It involves fixed appliances such as AC units or televisions, fixing a clogged toilet, and replacing bulbs and batteries in remotes. Next to a general task lists there is a walkie-talkie to respond to sudden problems and random events.
