Shattered Memories is certainly not for everyone. Some will find its pacing too deliberate for their action-minded tastes, but this isn't really trying to be a game that's anything less than cerebral (albeit sometimes more in psychology than execution). If you don't like thinking about narrative, this isn't going to do anything for you. But overall, given the game's different approach to what's been a pretty stale series for a while now, Shattered Memories involving psychological narrative absolutely makes the game worth checking out. While it can't entirely compare to how amazing it looks on the Wii, watching the town twist and warp under the weight of a thick layer of ice doesn't look half-bad on the PSP.

The only real downside is the graphics which are a bit plain in general, rough and lacking in detail but adequate. The cutscenes are well scripted and visually appealing though. Silent Hill is a great reimagining of the first game in this franchise.

GameSpot (Jan 29, 2010)
Throughout the years, the Silent Hill franchise has gradually lost focus of its psychological roots and has moved instead toward an ultimately subpar, more action-oriented experience. Shattered Memories is a fantastic return to the core concept of personal fear, and though its developers made some unorthodox decisions--such as removing combat entirely--those decisions have paid off handsomely. This is not the Silent Hill that may have terrified you more than a decade ago but an entirely new experience that is truer to it than any other game bearing the name since Silent Hill 3. Despite a few issues, including its surprising brevity, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is a great game for anyone looking for a scare, whether you've been to the haunted town before or not.

Unfortunately, there are some issues. It only takes about ten hours to beat the game. Furthermore, there's constant loading, particularly when you're going through doorways into new areas. However, Shattered Memories is the best game in the series in quite a while, and perhaps a precursor for better things to come. Grab a copy, turn out the lights and enjoy.
Worth Playing (Feb 12, 2010)
If you haven't had a chance to check out Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, then I urge you to pick it up. This isn't going to do much for you if you're not already a fan of horror games, but longtime Silent Hill fans should really appreciate this particular release. It manages to stay creepy throughout, does some great things on the audio and visual fronts, and has one of the best soundtracks in the series to date. There are some annoyances to overcome in the chase sequences, but ultimately, de-emphasizing the combat was the right decision to make. Shattered Memories is absolutely worth trying out.

Silent Hill Shattered Memories will probably feel like a shallow version of the series to veteran players. But as a standalone title it represents a niche that is intelligent, thoughtful and meaningful. There aren't many cheap scares or deeply disturbing elements to Shattered Memories, but the overall experience left me pondering my actions and maybe understanding myself a little better too.

TheSixthAxis (Mar 09, 2010)
From a value perspective, Shattered Memories is not the longest of games. Knuckling down, and likely missing a lot of the finer details, players could probably race through it in five or six hours. There are multiple endings (no signs of a UFO one though – yet), and the game does change with repeat play-throughs thanks to the branching structure which stems from the player’s choices along the way. In essence, however, there’s not a great deal here for the price of admission. If you’re interested in a solid, nerve-shredding jaunt through familiar territory with a few curve-balls thrown in to make the experience somewhat novel, however, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories delivers all the chills and uneasiness the series is renown for. It therefore comes recommended, especially to those who don’t feel the need to hit diabolical fiends on the head with a pipe whenever they happen to materialise from out of nowhere.
IGN (Jan 26, 2010)
The PSP version of the game is not nearly as inviting as the Wii title before it. The obvious visual downgrades are to be expected. The lighting effects are less impressive all around. More disappointing, though, are the sluggish controls -- Mason moves slower and heavier -- and the inability to directly control and point his flashlight, a major selling point of the home platform title. These issues noted, Shattered Memories remains a competent PSP action thriller, particularly for those with no other choices.
1UP (Jan 15, 2010)
Regardless, Shattered Memories gives you something to think about, even if you don't feel like you have direct control over how events transpire -- a result of the game's non-binary, open-ended decisions, both in how you play the game and in the "psychological profiles" you undergo. That's not bad, but it makes it difficult to understand how exactly your actions change the story's progession. It's not the worst Silent Hill game by a long shot, but the unavoidable action sequences still sour this excursion to Silent Hill for me.
Game Shark (Feb 23, 2010)
I'm of the opinion that survival horror games are a tough sell on any handheld console simply due to the smaller screen size and the need to wear headphones and possibly sit so that the light through the train window doesn't wash out the game's darker graphics. That's a lot for any narrative to overcome and make the player fear for their life. In a game like Silent Hill: Shattered Memories the immersion is crucial to giving the player the full experience and unfortunately, that experience doesn't come along with the game's other high points to the PSP. If you're into psychological thrillers and adventure games it's still worth playing however the game's running sequences may make you want to leave Harry and Cheryl to their snowy fates rather than solve the game's final mystery. If you can weather the running sequences though, you'll be treated to one of the better gaming stories in recent memories, even if you never break a nervous sweat while experiencing it.
Gaming Age (Mar 30, 2010)
For being a port, it plays like it was made for the PSP, and although load times can come at awkward times [like the middle of a word in a cutscene], it tends to pull up fair-sized sections to play through with no interruption. The game's design is thoughtful in interviewing the player, but in architecture becomes counterproductive in making the scary parts tame and taming the parts that should have been tense. The story is nothing to rave about, but fans will love it and newcomers will finally start to get a hint of what the fuss is all about. Based on what I know about the rest of the series, this runs somewhere in the middle as far as intensity goes so let that tell you how you feel about picking it up. Then again, I hear the console versions had a bit more edge in their control schemes, particularly on the Wii, and that seems to be the greatest detriment to Shattered Memories' journey to the PSP.
