WiiThe Video Game Critic (Jun 16, 2009)
Although rendered with far more detail than the original Punch-Out, the fighters still maintain the same appealing, cartoonish style. There's a modest amount of damage modeling, mostly in the form of bruises and band-aids. The new head-to-head mode lets you compete against a friend on a split-screen. It's okay, but you can only play as Little Mac, and the controls feel a bit stiff and mechanical. Occasionally one player transforms into a Hulk-like "Giga Mac", adding a bit of intrigue. It's the single-player career mode however that will have you up until the wee hours of the morning. Punch-Out has a "one more time" quality few other games can match.
WiiGiant Bomb (May 19, 2009)
Not to harp on this point too much, but save for the inclusion of Mike Tyson, I'm not sure you could expect much better from a Punch-Out!! remake.
Wii1UP (May 15, 2009)
So, yeah. Not only is Punch Out!! worth the 50 bucks, but lands on a very short list of Wii games I feel that way about. Even better, while Punch Out!! makes for an entertaining enough solitary experience, the back-seat driving aspect makes it positively shine as a party game. There's nothing quite like having a few friends over, passing the controller around, shouting advice, and just generally bonding over some hilarious, bloodless violence.
WiiNintendoWorldReport (May 21, 2009)
Fans of this series should have already purchased this game and newcomers should dive right in and experience one of the best games available on Wii.
WiiGaming Age (May 29, 2009)
All in all, this is easily one of my favorite titles on the Wii, and in my opinion should be put up on a pedestal damn close to Super Mario Galaxy. Next Level has taken one of my favorite NES titles and turned it up a notch, making it feel right at home on the current-gen hardware but still managing to capture everything that worked so well in the original. Wii owners owe it to themselves to pick this one up; it's not one to be missed.
WiiGamers' Temple, The (2009)
Now, I'd love to give Punch-Out!!! a score of 100 percent, but the addition of a multiplayer mode, the addition of Super Punch-Out characters to the lineup and the lack of Classic Controller compatibility keep it just short of perfection. It really just comes down to this: Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!! was (and is) one of the best games ever produced. The Wii's revamp of the series after far too long may not be a perfect 10 or have the same amount of charm as the original, but it is a must-buy title for every last Wii owner out there and a worth addition to the revered franchise. Be warned, though… you're going to be knocked out. A lot. But that is the point of Punch-Out!!! - practice makes perfect… and since practicing is so much fun, expect to hit the perfect descriptor at some point down the road. I don't know about you, but even when (if) I do attain perfection, I highly doubt I'll stop playing. The game is really that much fun.
WiiGameLemon (Jul 24, 2009)
Ultimately, Punch-Out!! for Wii accomplishes exactly what it set out to do: provide some hardcore fun for all generations of gamers and delivering a must-buy for the Wii in between Mario and Zelda titles. The game is a joy to play and will keep you going until you can beat that next fighter. Okay, maybe one more...
WiiRetro Gamer (Jun, 2009)
Stylish, impossibly polished and above all amazing fun to play, Punch-Out!! is a sensational update that captures the spirit of past games but still manages to feel like a brand new experience.
Wii411mania.com (Jun 18, 2009)
Punch-Out!! how I loved thee. This game was an absolute blast from the beginning till the end and I can see myself playing this one for years to come. The folks over and Next Level Games did a great job and helped revive the franchise to its classic roots. The characters are over the top, the gameplay is frantic and this game is easily one of the most enjoyable experiences on the Nintendo Wii. This truly is a system seller for me. Bravo!
WiiGaming Target (Jul 03, 2009)
Punch-Out!! captures the essence and invokes the spirit of the original without feeling old. The developers at Next Level have created the Punch-Out!! sequel fans have been waiting fifteen years for. At times, the game can feel a bit too scripted (your opponents frequently get up from the canvas after the same count every fight), but even someone who's never taken on Mike Tyson or the dreaded Bruiser brothers will find that Punch-Out!! still retains its crown as the best boxing game the world has to offer.
WiiOfficial Nintendo Magazine (May 21, 2009)
The best Punch-Out!! game yet. Accessible for newcomers but a real challenge for experts.
WiiGame Revolution (Jun 19, 2009)
From the music to the controls and Doc’s worthless advice between rounds, everything in Punch Out!! harkens back to a time before bump-mapping and load screens, a time when games didn’t have to rely on downloadable content or pre-order bonuses to be great. Whether you’re an old hand to Nintendo bitch-slapping, or boxing is a new concept to you, Punch Out!! is as good as it gets for remakes. It’s changed very little and added just enough to keep the experience fresh for return players. If you own a Wii, Punch Out!! is a real knock out $50 well spent.
WiiHardcore Gamer Magazine (May 18, 2009)
In the past Nintendo’s reluctance to embrace new intellectual properties for release on the Wii has failed to produce new classics. However, their dedication to their established franchises has always seemed to result in fun games and Punch-Out!! for the Wii is no exception.
WiiOperation Sports (May 22, 2009)
If you are a fan of old-school arcade sports games that are all about fun and challenge, you need to go out right now and pick up Punch-Out for the Wii. I would even say that this game is a system seller for me. The game may have no online capabilities and is a tad on the short side, but I can confidently say that this game will hold me over for the next 15 years.
WiiGamereactor (Sweden) (May 19, 2009)
WiiWired (May 19, 2009)
It’s just a solid, addictive, finely polished game that’s easy enough for newbies and challenging enough for those who remember. Sometimes, they do make ‘em like they used to.
WiiDestructoid (May 18, 2009)
For players new to the series, word of advice: to beat King Hippo, you’re going to have to... nah, I'll let you figure that one out for yourself. That’s half the fun. Just don’t spend too much time face-down on the mat, Mac.
WiiGamesRadar (May 18, 2009)
Punch-Out!! expertly walks the line between casual punchy-punchy and “serious gamer” depth. As with all the best fighting games, it’s not about seeing the end, it’s about how you get there.
WiiGameSpy (May 18, 2009)
I'm calling it right here: Punch-Out!! is destined to become one of this generation's top classics, right up there with Super Mario Galaxy. It's one heckuva peace offering for Nintendo's jilted lifers, an elaborate brainteaser for everyone who picks it up, and absolutely the best Punch-Out!! to date. If you're still fishing for a reason to own a Wii, this is it.
WiiCheat Code Central (2009)
The developers at Next Level Games have taken a cherished franchise and given it new life for a new generation. Moreover, they have somehow managed to do so without alienating gaming grognards and ultra-fans like myself. Though the game doesn't quite attain perfection, it remains the best arcade boxing franchise around. I can't wait for a sequel!
WiiGame Informer Magazine (Jun, 2009)
Despite these complaints, the single-player has always been the focus of Punch-Out, and Next Level delivers. What better way to show your buddy up than to totally annihilate the boxer that just KO’d him?
WiiGameFocus (May 21, 2009)
If you’re a fan of the original or even if you’ve never picked up a Punch Out!! game before in your life, you owe it to yourself to get this game. Quite simply, one of the best NES games has now been re-made into one of the best Wii games available.
WiiMeristation (May 20, 2009)
WiiArmchair Empire, The (May 18, 2009)
Besides the Exhibition and Career modes, Punch-Out!! includes a split-screen two-player component that will likely be of little interest to anyone over the age of 12; however, at my house that’s all my kids and because to them it’s similar to Wii Boxing it got a lot of play. Both players use Little Mac to pound on each other until one of them earns the Giga Mac power-up, which throws one of them into the shoes a what Little Mac would look like if he was a ‘roid monkey and shifts the action to one screen, rather than split. As much as I was pummelled by the higher echelon of boxers, it was (and continues to be) fun. It’s also open enough to be kid-friendly and punishing enough to offer the kind of experience many of us from the NES era remember so fondly.
WiiGamePro (US) (May 18, 2009)
There's no denying it: Punch-Out!! is some of the most fun I've had on the Wii in quite some time. A spectacular trip down memory lane, Punch-Out!! manages to capture the old-school essence that made the 1987 original such a success, all the while integrating just enough new material to help it hold its own. While Punch-Out!! is by no means perfect, it's undoubtedly one of the finest arcade-inspired titles to grace store shelves in this "next gen" era, and is without a doubt worth any hardcore fight-fan's hard-earned cash.
WiiGameDaily (May 18, 2009)
You'll love playing with the remote held sideways because the game plays like old school Punch-Out!!; physically punching the air with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk (and dodging with the Wii Fit Balance Board), while a novel idea, isn't accurate enough to defeat tougher opponents. In addition, the game features a fun split screen Mac vs. Mac multiplayer mode, a Title Defense mode where all of the boxers have new attack patterns and a 3-D presentation full of humorous cut scenes and impressive little touches that bring out each fighter's quirks. Online play and additional challengers (Disco Kid is the only new character) would've made this even better, but Punch-Out!! is still a fun and nostalgia driven arcade style boxing game that every Wii owner should play.
Gamers looking for an in-depth boxing sim will not find it here. Those looking for wonderful puzzles to solve, characters to fall in love with, and music that will stick for years, this is your game. Punch-Out!! is going to be easily regarded as one of the stand out titles of this year on any system and is a must-own game for Wii owners.
WiiWorth Playing (May 31, 2009)
Punch-Out!! is a must-have sports game on a system that doesn't really have many decent sports games. The graphics bleed with style, and the sound is a top-notch effort on the console. The controls are responsive enough, depending on which control scheme you use. While the multiplayer isn't something that will see much playtime, the lengthy single-player experience will ensure that this title is kept in rotation for quite some time. Old fans of the series have should pick this up, and gamers who are new to the series will have a blast even after being defeated by the same boxer for the umpteenth time. Punch-Out!! is definitely a worthy addition to any Wii gamer's library.
WiiGame Positive (May 30, 2009)
If fans were disappointed that Super Punch-Out!! tried to take the series back to its arcade roots, they only need to play the Wii sequel to relive the NES classic. The new Punch-Out!! successfully recreates everything fans loved about the series without getting caught up in gimmicky motion controls or the trap of drastically altering classic gameplay to attract a new audience. It's a great sequel well worth waiting fifteen years for.
WiiNintendo Life (May 25, 2009)
After their great efforts with the Mario Strikers games, Next Level Games have once again proven they know how to handle Nintendo franchises. Punch-Out!! on the Wii is an absolutely amazing new instalment in the classic franchise with a ton of content for both new and old fans. The multiplayer and motion control aspects are a bit of a let-down but there's just so much other good stuff here that it's easy to overlook these minor niggles. This is quite possibly the greatest revival of all time; please Nintendo, don't let the franchise die off again!
WiiAtomic Gamer (Jun 08, 2009)
PunchOut!! is great fun for fans of the NES classic as well as for fresh contenders. The fact the WiiRemote-mapped controls work so well is a nice bonus. It isn't terribly innovative, and anyone looking for a full-on sequel rather than a reboot, may exit the ring wanting a bit more. The absence of Mario as referee may also disappoint purists. Still, it's a fantastic addition to any Wii library, as it packs a punch for those who just started gaming as well as those who spent hours studying Iron Mike's weakness in the original.
WiiVandal Online (May 25, 2009)
WiiIGN (May 15, 2009)
But I'm not going to let the lack of online kill the experience for me: Punch-Out!! on the Wii is a fantastic recreation of the NES original and retains every element that makes the game one hell of a challenge and insanely addictive. The Wii version also looks fantastic, with animation that puts a level of attention to character personality that's rarely seen in a Nintendo first-party title. I'm thrilled that the formula's been retained but I do wish there were more original characters to the roster. Luckily the second half of the game brings back that sense of discovery with character upgrades that change things considerably. Punch-Out!! nuts have nothing to worry about, and I think that the game design holds up really well, even for players who aren't familiar with the brand's unique offering of pattern-focused gameplay.
WiiGameZone (May 26, 2009)
Boxing at its best. Many games have tried to capture the arcade essence of the Punch-Out!! series, and all of them have failed. But nearly 20 years later, the king is back and is better than ever.
WiiJeuxvideo.com (May 26, 2009)
WiiJeux Vidéo Network (May 29, 2009)
Retour gagnant pour Little Mac. Chapeau !
WiiGood Game (Aug 10, 2009)
Ah, I think it’s really accessible, even if it does get really hard, anyone can enjoy the early levels, I’m giving it 8.5.
WiiDeeko (Jun 05, 2009)
All in all, Punch-Out!! is good fun for both fans of the classic Punch-Out games and those new to the franchise. Punch-Out!! on the Wii incorporates just enough of the old style that we all loved with new characters and controls that make the game interesting and fun. Controls are fairly responsive no matter which way gamers choose to play and allow enough versatility to reach all types of players. Even if you're not playing the game, it's still amusing just watching others play. The characters are lively and humorous, as well as fun to watch. This is a must have for anyone who is looking for a simple, classic fighting game; as well as for anyone looking for a little bit of a challenge.
WiiDa Gameboyz (2009)
Punch-Out is an enjoyable title for all ages and is a great arcade style boxing title which makes use of all of the controls available on the Nintendo Wii. With only a few minor issues with the graphics and the lack of character selection in multiplayer, Punch-Out shapes up to be one of the better arcade boxing titles to be released on this current generation of consoles to date.
WiiGameTrailers (May 16, 2009)
In the last 15 years a lot of games have tried to replicate the Punch-Out!! formula, but all have failed until now. It's disappointing that the motion controls are more a novelty than an effective way to play, but the personality, nostalgic nods, hidden goodies, and battle-tested, edge-of-your-seat gameplay demonstrate that some things never go out of style.
WiiGameSpot (May 20, 2009)
Punch-Out is a great update to the classic boxing franchise. Although it is largely the same game that it was more than 20 years ago, it's still fun and charming. The fights are still so intense and rewarding that you'll want to see all the different tricks the boxers have up their sleeves. The silly visuals exude charm and offer a few laugh-out-loud moments. Even the two-player mode, which is utterly ridiculous, is fun, letting you gleefully bash your buddy. The motion controls are too tiring and the balance board support is a mess, but everything else about this game is pure entertainment.
WiiPlay Magazine (May 21, 2009)
Complaints are already being waged that the game is too similar too the old series. This game wasn’t meant for you. For the rest of us who desire an experience that isn’t trying to be anything more than high-level throwback, Punch-Out!! is fantastic fun. This game is an unexpected treat and reason I still hold onto the value of the Wii...
WiiGame Over Online (Jul 07, 2009)
Overall, the gameplay itself is fun, and there are enough options (Wii Remote, Wii Remote/Nunchuk, Balance Board) to suit the preferences of any gamer. While graphically the game may not match up against games on powerhouse systems Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the Wii has not really been about graphic-intensive games. Taking Punch Out!! into the realm of 3D graphics is a nice touch but really has little bearing on how good the game is. For fans of the series, Punch Out!! for the Wii will provide a nice mix of old school gameplay and new challenges; and for those who have never played a Punch Out!! game before, it should be a nice change of pace that hearkens back to a different era of video games.
WiiXGN (Jun 01, 2009)
WiiGames TM (Jun 11, 2009)
Casual racism aside, Punch-Out!! is a long overdue re-imaging of one of Nintendo's most overlooked brands and is, for us, the epitome of what a good Wii game should be. Next Level acknowledges and works around the limitations of motion control, bringing the Punch-Out!! series up to date without losing any of the charm that made it a fan favourite in the first place.
WiiThat Gaming Site (May 20, 2009)
Punch Out!! does a great job of keeping both veterans and newcomers entertained. The classic perfectly revived for a new audience.
WiiUOL Jogos (May 18, 2009)
Punch-Out!!
Punch-Out is a welcome return for an old favourite that has spent far too long in the sidelines. It’s a finely crafted, rare game that is able to reach out to both the casual and hardcore audiences. Can we have Pilotwings and F-Zero next, please?
WiiEurogamer.net (UK) (May 21, 2009)
If you're not a fan Punch-Out!! is still worth trying, but with caution. It's approachable at first but a hard taskmaster later on, an endurance test for your nerves and temper. You know, like videogames used to be. Well, you asked for it. And Nintendo is only too happy to plant it right between your eyes.
WiiGamervision (May 21, 2009)
More of a remake than a true sequel, Punch-Out!! is really for fans of the original. For anyone on the fence, however, it might not be worth the full price. Nintendo played it safe this time, and it’s hard to blame them, but it still is somewhat disappointing that they didn’t go the extra mile and expand the game’s content. Nevertheless, Nintendo seems to have given fans exactly what they wanted, no more, no less.
WiiGemakei (formerly Zentendo) (May 30, 2009)
It seems Nintendo had a bit of the identity problem with this game. The game play will attract older fans whereas the graphics will attract new players. Perhaps a selection of difficulty levels would have been better for new players as some of the fights are brutal and unforgiving of mistakes. Still, Punch-Out!! is a great looking, challenging game with a good amount of replay value. Fans of previous Punch-Out titles will have new obstacles to come over making it a familiar but new experience making it worthy of a purchase. Causal gamers or newcomers to the series will definitely want to rent first as the challenge may be too much in the fights later in the game. Whatever category you may fall in, make sure you check this game out.
Hugely successful update which may lack realism, but is loaded with charm and surprising depth.
Wiivideogamer.com (May 26, 2009)
If you've been waiting most of your life for a visually upgraded Punch-Out!! that plays just as you remember it from the NES and SNES, your dreams have been answered. This is exactly that, and packed full of the kind of charm you'd expect from a Nintendo product. If you like your sports games to be faithful to the real-life experience Punch-Out!! may well leave you quite cold and wondering what the fuss is about. Punch-Out!! on Wii has been made almost exclusively for gamers who long for the glory days before Nintendo was most well known for Wii Fit. In that sense it can be classed as a job well done.
WiiThe A.V. Club (May 18, 2009)
It’s a gussied-up throwback, but the old dog still has it.
Wii4Players.de (May 29, 2009)
WiiFamily Friendly Gaming (Oct 01, 2011)
It is my hope that aggressive people can use Punch-Out to release some of those aggressions. My concern is it will make people more aggressive. Spouse abuse is a big problem that few want to look at. In my opinion Punch-Out should be a ‘T’ for Teen rated video game. Punch-Out teaches to look for an opening and then smash through it. Once you find that opening you have to hit them as many times as you can.
WiiVideo Game Generation (Jun 22, 2010)
Here goes: “Yes! Nintendo has proven that they still know how to produce a great game! Punch-Out!! is a lot of fun just like its predecessor! All your favorite boxers are back, and the laughs just keep on coming!” Now if only we could forget the incredibly glaring problem in front of our collective faces. If only Next Level Games had made an actual attempt at approximating Wii compatibility and a motion tracked control system. I mean, you have two remotes and a balance board, plus a sensor bar. There’s no reason whatsoever that this couldn’t have been something approximate to an actual boxing game, but with the fun of Punch Out!! tacked on. The fact that you’re essentially forced to play with the Wii Remote turned sideways is not only ridiculous, but even results in a resurgence of the dreaded “Nintendo thumb”, which I hadn’t suffered since the heyday of the original NES!
WiiAusGamers (Aug 06, 2009)
There are missed opportunities in local-only two-player multiplayer and maybe more mini-games would have opened up the experience. But the core gameplay here has definitely withstood the test of time and the game's quirky humour and great presentation make it hard to feel too sore at Little Mac and co. If you find yourself down at JB Hi-Fi at the end of this month and the price is right, I'd still recommend the game.
WiiGood Game (Aug 10, 2009)
It’s fun, funny and faithful to the original. I’m giving it 7/10.
