This is a welcome addition to the Sega's shoot'em-up catalogue. The only other decent horizontal blaster is R-Type - which was a bit glitchy and perhaps too much for the SMS to handle. Cloud Master is just right - fast, pretty, and tough.
A frustrating, but nevertheless enjoyable shoot 'em up which features the weirdest characters you'll ever pump full of laser.

While the in game music is decent enough, the sounds are rather blah. The bosses are also a bit underwhelming. But the game offers enough to keep me coming back to discover what new, unusual enemies await. (Bowls of rice, anyone? Spinning cat heads?)

And so Cloud Master goes. Take Mike through an ancient mythical landscape, destroy freaky creatures, get stronger weapons, destroy more freaky creatures, fight boss, stay alive. Were Cloud Master a more traditional shmup where you control a ship in space, I wouldn’t give it a second look. The gameplay is solid, but there’s very little depth or replayability. Mike’s large character sprite make the game harder than it needs to be, particularly when you have dozens of enemies and hard-to-see projectiles filling up the screen all at once. Yes, Cloud Master will make you feel pain, but if you’re compelled to make Mike the True Cloud Master, it’ll be because of the game’s unconventional setting, ridiculous main character, and goofy, light-hearted vibe. Cloud Master isn’t perfect, but it is unusual. Sometimes that’s enough.

Overall Cloud Master has some strong elements that are generally ruined by the aforementioned problems. It's really a shame. I've only seen the arcade version, never played it, so I'm not sure how well this has mimicked the original, for better or for worse. It would be interesting to see, but after playing this I doubt I would want to. I'd rather die repeatedly for free than for a dollar or five.

1UP! (May 15, 2004)

All in all though, the five rounds will give you a fair challenge the first time through when you don’t know what’s what. Of course, once you do, you’ll find yourself clearing the game without dying, even while eating and sending BBM messages. It's a bit easy and a bit short, but a fun way to spend an hour or so, or maybe even a day. Cloud Master has tepid and disposable written all over it, but its accessibility is its saving grace.
Power Play (Nov, 1989)
An extremely frustrating and difficult game. Action-filled backgrounds that are highly repetitive make it difficult to stay interested for very long. A dull game that, because of its difficulty, becomes more frustrating than enjoyable.
This is one of the grottiest looking Sega games we've ever seen. Backgrounds use criminally few colours, level one just white, black and grey plus one or two bright colours on the crude ground features. Sprites are as badly designed, all childish in appearance except, strangely, flying bowls of rice! (Or is it breakfast cereal?). Scrolling is okay but tediously slow. If you've some money to spend on a Sega game use it on Alex Kidd: High-Tech World or Tennis Ace.
