I’m not sure why Sega decided to change their approach to Enduro Racer (other than the obvious technical limitations of the Master System), but kudos to them for not playing it safe. The enhancements and unorthodox approach to racing make Enduro Racer much more than just Hang On’s Redneck Cousin, The Game. They show that Sega was learning how to differentiate from console development and arcade development, and might I say, it’s about damn time. Wheelie on, you crazy dirtbike.
The play is fast and challenging and the only real problem, and it is a biggy, is that your ability to turn left and right is very sluggish. There is the ability to pick up better handling off the tune up screen.
In conclusion, Enduro Racer is a great game. It's one of the core titles from the Master System's early library and certainly one every fan needs to own. It has some areas that could have used a bit more work, but overall it's really a lot of fun and nothing to be ashamed to own. Sega did a great job doing something new with an arcade title, which was rarely done in the past and should have been done more often. In addition, this little beauty sold so well that Sega decided to re-release it during the last ditch effort to revive the SMS in the early 90s. It thus also comes in the rare, "blue label" version with a different cartridge, box and manual. Pretty hard to find, so if you're into collecting as well playing there you go. This is a stock title every Master System fan should own, rare or otherwise.
This motorcycle game reminds me of Excitebike for the NES. You ride on a diagonal-scrolling screen, jumping ramps, passing other vehicles, and trying to make it to the finish line before time runs out. The ten levels take you through five environments, including country, ruins, desert, marsh, and mountains. The graphics are nice, but the scenery isn't very spectacular; basically trees and rocks. And what's up with the color? The trees and the mountain trails are both blue, which makes it look like I need to adjust my TV. It's really an endurance test to make it through all ten races. Each race lasts a minute or less. Between races you can use your bonus points to upgrade your bike, and the upgrades make a dramatic difference. I wasn't exactly hooked on Enduro Racer, but trying to make it through all ten races is a worthy challenge.
Enduro Racer is not the worst racing game on the Master System, it just seems unnecessary with far better motorcycle racers already on the system. The levels aren't different enough to keep you interested and without a multiplayer mode there's not much replay to speak of. If you're persistent you'll find some fun in Enduro Racer, but it's a long hike getting there ... one you might want to think twice about taking.
Overall, Enduro Racer is a decent game. The controls are intuitive and responsive; the tracks are fun to race. What the game lacks is variety. There are really only 5 courses, and one bike to play with. After completing the game a few times, there isn’t anything to keep you coming back. Fans of racing games, or classic Sega arcade titles, will enjoy this, other gamers should look elsewhere.
Philosophy students and aspiring monks need to download Enduro Racer straight away in order to have their perspectives on existence informed by its ending sequence's introspective musings, but the rest of we Wii owners can easily get along without it. Its isometric motorcycling gameplay is fair, but it's nothing like the arcade game it's named after and a more robust 8-bit bike racer is already available in the Wii Shop through Excitebike, which has features like a custom course creator that this release lacks.
