Paperboy is a lighthearted game with a fine sense of humor. Once you figure it out, you'll be playing it over and over again.
Paperboy ranks as one of the best arcade conversions available for the Sega, with bright, colourful graphics, great scrolling and plenty of nice, humorous touches thrown in. All the features of the arcade game are in there, even the selectable skill levels, making it a game that'll have you coming back to your Sega months after purchase. The only slight downer is the Sega's attempt at copying the arcade tunes - they sound a bit ropey to me. Sega owners aren't particularly well catered for when it comes to decent coin-op conversions, but Paperboy and Gauntlet help set the record well and truly straight,
Mean Machines (Oct, 1990)
This conversion captures all the humour, originality and playability of the arcade machine. It seems very straightforward at first, but once mad dogs, nutty street dancers, runaway tyres and even rogue drivers enter the fray, things start getting very tough indeed. It's great fun trying to get all the papers in the mailboxes, but my favourite part of the game is causing as much damage to non-subscribers' properties as possible! With its fantastic graphics and faithful arcade tunes, Paperboy should find a place in any arcade fan's cartridge collection.

Younger gamers may not be able to relate to the game’s bizarre depiction of neighborhood life, let alone the notion that teenagers were once hired, en masse, to deliver news to people’s doorsteps. For me, the game exudes a surreal nostalgia that reminds me of my own fragmented suburban upbringing – a thing that few games, save for powerhouses like Earthbound, can replicate. And even if you don’t have emotional ties to the game’s content, it’s enjoyable just to bike down the sidewalk at top speed while trying to land a paper in the mail slot. Paperboys certainly don’t run the world anymore, but Paperboy remains a classic.
Sega Power (Dec, 1993)
Guide your paperboy through a diagonally-scrolling suburbia of runaway machinery and nutty neighbours while hurling newspapers into the correct houses. Beautiful.

Doté d'excellents graphismes et d'une bande sonore dynamique, ce jeu d'US Gold est une réussite. Le seul petit reproche concernera la durée de vie de Paperboy, trop courte à mon sens, bien que trois niveaux de difficulté soit présents dans cette version sur Master System.

In meinen Tagen wurde man bloß gefeuert, wenn man die Klasse nicht bestanden hatte. Dieses Spiel macht Spaß, doch ist es zu einfach, wenn Sie nicht gerade den schwierigsten Level spielen.
Zur Freude am Spiel gibt‘s neben flüssigem und schnellem Gameplay auch blitzsauberes Anti-Ruckelscrolling mit dem fürs MASTER SYSTEM typischen Plätscher-Sound. Einfach verblüffend, wieviel Spaß dieser Arcade-Klassiker auf der kleinen Sega-Konsole noch machen kann.

Al ser este juego una conversión pura y dura del arcade su vida es tremendamente corta, con un poco de práctica se pueden acabar los tres niveles de dificultad sin ningún problema, siendo lo peor de todo que los cambios entre los mismos son mínimos. Se echan en falta los añadidos que sí tuvo la secuela (casi contemporánea de esta versión) en las consolas de 16 bits.

This is a reasonably faithful representation of the original. The graphics are of a fairly high standard, being as good as you would expect from an 8-bit console. If you enjoyed the original, then you will have no complaints about the playability of this particular version.

Nachdem die Sega-Programmierer anscheinend vergessen haben, welche technischen Fähigkeiten ihr eigenes 8-Bit-System bietet, hält wenigstens U.S. Gold die Fahne der Master-System-Besitzer hoch. Die Umsetzung des Arcade-Klassikers "Paperboy" ist den Engländern ordentlich gelungen. Zwar ruckt das Scrolling etwas, wenn mehrere Objekte auf dem Bildschirm umherflitzen, doch kommt dies relativ selten vor. Spielerisch hat sich gegenüber dem Original so gut wie nichts geändert. Das Spielprinzip ist halt nicht mehr das Allerfrischeste.

Ce qu'il y a de plus vexant avec Paperboy est qu'un principe aussi misérable, aussi étriqué, ait été resservi pendant tant d'années sur des supports variés et bien au-dessus d'une telle pauvreté de game design. A croire que les compagnies de distribution de journaux essayaient de redonner le goût du métier à leurs jeunes employés en leur gâchant leurs jeux vidéo. En 1990 sur Master System, Paperboy, ce vieillard adolescent, était déjà trop vieux d'une génération.
