Although not exactly tops in originality, Master of Darkness is a superb title you'd be a fool to miss. Buy! Buy you fools!

Retro Game Reviews (Aug 17, 2017)
Some might overlook Master of Darkness as a pure Castlevania clone, but that would be doing it a great disservice. It's a great game in its own right, with lots of improvements to the standard formula, as well as tight controls, fantastic level design and top-notch presentation.

Retrospekt (Sep 27, 2010)
With the challenging factor aside, Master of Darkness was probably one of the better clones of Castlevania on a console which doesn’t start with the letter N and ends with intendo. All in all, it was a solid platformer for the Master System with a decent challenge, and atmosphere to boot.

Retrogaming History (Feb 06, 2009)

The Game Hoard (Oct 28, 2018)
Master of Darkness doesn’t just wear its Castlevania influence on its sleeve, it wears it proudly across its entire wardrobe. However, by building from the template of the older title, Master of Darkness can make adjustments that fix its issues and emphasize its strengths. Varied level designs can house quick and aggressive enemies because of smooth movement controls, and the main character’s arsenal of weapons isn’t just a straight climb of upgrades but a selection of options that players can pick from to match their play style. At times it is a bit too easy because the player can respond to trouble pretty well, but it can still stand shoulder to shoulder with its more challenging inspiration since its improvements allow for some diverse stage design to shine.

1UP! (Oct 31, 2010)

Sharkberg (Jul 16, 2015)
Master of Darkness surprised me. I went in expecting a bland Castlevania knockoff, and left with it secured as one of my favorite 8-bit platformers. Few flaws notwithstanding (and honestly most of the flaws are borrowed from its source material), Master of Darkness is a great vampire-murdering replacement for those without the NES system, at least until the Genesis came out and they got the best 16-bit Castlevania.

If you like action games with a hint of adventure tossed in, this is one cartridge that you can't pass up. Master of Darkness takes platforming and adds nice little touches of exploration combined with a classic storyline to deliver one of the most pleasurable experiences on the Sega Master System!

Overall, Master Of Darkness is a fun action/adventure that, while drawing comparisons to Castlevania due to its control scheme and subject matter, has enough originality to help it stand apart from your average Castlevania clone. It's certainly worth a look if you're a Castlevania fan, or if you just want a really good game for your SMS (or Game Gear, for that matter).
