This is what I'd call an uber-worthy sequel. A top notch strategy/RPG in all respects, straight from the company that made them popular on consoles, Sega. Thank God it made the trip across the Pacific to the USA, so that savvy Saturn owners can enjoy it. It's a must buy, either Import or Domestic. Don't miss out on the latest benchmark for strategy/RPGs...

Overall, Shining Force 3 was, in my view, a masterpiece. Anyone that owns a Sega Saturn should own this CD, whether you like strategy games or not, or whether you're importing the other two scenarios or not. I paid $49.99 for this game, and it was worth every pretty penny. Shining Force 3, even as a stand-alone game with only 1/3 of the story revealed to U.S. gamers, still stands as one of the best games I've ever played. Even with the crappy voice acting.

The Saturn may be deader than Elvis, but don't tell Sonic Software Planning. It's recently translated its Shining Force franchise from Genesis to the Saturn with enough panache and style to make the King thrust his pelvis one more time. Shining Force III is a vast improvement over the highly complicated, statistic-intense games that fill its tactical sub-genre. This is an accessible, fun RPG that will keep you on your toes at all turns with concentrated challenge.
Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM) (Sep, 1998)
Shining Force III is a fun and well-made RPG, no doubt about it. The graphics are definitely above-average (especially those cool fight sequences), the music is really nice and the story line really draws you in. The strategic feel makes the game's battles quite difficult, but it certainly keeps you on your toes during play (and angry as hell sometimes). If this is the last Saturn game by Sega, at least they're ending on a good note. Shining Force III takes everything that made the Genesis games great and pumps it up to the next level. The 3D engine is great (some of the best graphics the Saturn has ever seen) and the music and story (what a story!) are top-notch. Kudos to Sega for doing such a nice job on the translation. The battles are perfectly balanced throughout, even at the end, and they're a lot of fun to play. Sega, please give us Scenarios 2 and 3!

So if you want to play 1/3 of a great RPG, by all means play Shining Force 3 as the only way you'll ever see the real ending is if you've played through Scenario 2 and 3. To Sega, the day they refused Scenario 2 and 3 was the day they lost many avid RPG players.
Shining Force 3 is definitely worth getting if you like strategy RPGs. It’s a real shame that Sega only released the first disc in North America, because after I played this game, I was left very curious about the other scenarios. Hopefully Sega will make a Shining Force Series re-release some time in the future, and use that as the time to release the whole story.

RPG fans will welcome Shining Force III with open arms and mourn the probable lack of the second and third scenarios in English. For those less well-versed in strategy games and looking for something a little less trying than Final Fantasy Tactics, Shining Force III is a good bet.
Gamers' Republic (Jun, 1998)
In the past, I've played through and enjoyed games like Vandal Hearts and Final Fantasy Tactics. Shining Force 3 is a better game than either of these, hands-down. Why? It has more character, it has infinitely cooler environments, better graphics, faster gameplay, epic twelve-on-twelve fights, fantastic music, and glorious 3D towns to explore. It also feels right, all the time, and flows beautifully from battle to battle. Shining Force 3 is a wickedly fun strategy RPG, and a must-have game for Saturn owners.

Shining Force 3 is an excellent game. It does everything right and carries the tradition on to the next generation of systems. But I have some difficulty in recommending it, and even rating it. It is not finished. I don't know whether to rate it as a self-contained game by itself or as the first part in a series. Until Sega decides to release the rest of the series or announces a Dreamcast version for the US, I have to give it low ratings for the story and overall, despite knowing that when all the pieces are together it is possibly the best strategy RPG ever made. According to the packaging, this game is Shining Force 3, not Shining Force 3: Scenario One. And as it stands alone, it is not worthy of the Shining Force tradition.
Mega Fun (Aug, 1998)
Computer and Video Games (CVG) (Aug, 1998)
Shining Force 3 excels in its epic fight scenes. The graphics are always pretty, functional on the map scenes and spectacular to behold on the one-on-one battling cut-scenes - and watching your characters develop from small-fry into mighty warriors during the course of the game is immensely satisfying. In all, highly recommended and a must buy for any one even remotely interested in RPGs.
In the end, Shining Force 3 is a very good strategy rpg game but one that feels very incomplete as you dont' really get the full story out of it without trying the other 2 scenarios. I enjoyed it but I wish there was more to it. But that's not the game's fault as it was made and intended to be release as a 3 chapter series and not to be played as an open and shut book.

Shining Force III is a real gem. While it broke no new ground, it really gives a good experience from start to finish.
RPGFan (Apr 17, 1999)
In the end, you're left with a few questions. Would you buy a game just to look at its graphics? If the answer is yes, then buy SF3. Would you buy a strategy game, with very little strategy in it? Would you buy only 1/3 of a product? If the answer is yes to a few of those, then buy it by all means, but I warn you it's nowhere near as good as Shining Force 2, or most of the other Shining Force games for that matter. I was a bit disappointed and wouldn't recommend it to any strategy fan (unless you're a Shining Force strategy fan), unless they just wanted to see what the Saturn can really do graphically. Simply stated, this game's name should have been Shining Force 3 1/3, because without the other two, it just isn't a whole game.
