Kenichi Shirahama was a textbook loser; not particularly good in either academics or athletics, constantly bullied by his classmates, and ruthlessly made fun of by his few friends. But one day, he meets Miu Fūrinji, a beautiful young girl with a knack for martial arts, and the two of them become fast friends.
Hoping to become stronger, Kenichi joins Miu's dojo, Ryōzanpaku, and begins training under its six masters. Unfortunately, every foe he defeats attracts an even stronger one, and now he's caught the eye of a local gang called Ragnarok!
Kenichi is a 3D versus fighting game based on the manga and anime series created by Shun Matsuena. There are twelve characters available -- Kenichi, Miu, Ikki Takeda, Kōzō Ukita, and the eight members of the Ragnarok Hachikengō -- and each uses the same fighting style and techniques they use in the original series. Techniques are relatively grounded in reality, with none of the fireballs and ten-foot jumps found in the likes of Street Fighter.
There are a number of game modes on offer. First off is the story mode, which roughly follows Kenichi's story through the end of the original series' Ragnarok arc. Kenichi must fight each of the characters, and there are also training minigames between each fight that can boost his ability. There are also traditional score attack, time attack, and survival modes, as well as a practice mode and a standard versus mode. Last, there is a mission mode where the player must complete specific tasks or moves to proceed. There is also a gallery where bonus art is unlocked as the game is played.
