As with the other Shining Force titles, the emphasis here is on unit combat involving dozens of opponents over a whole battlefield, instead of individual combatants duking it out for one fight. Buy this one, it's got the goods.

For those who want a choice, the Sega CD version is much better, but for the sake of portability, and if you don't have a Sega CD, I guess this Game Gear port will have to do. And, since the story is the story is the same as the Sega CD version, it would be a pitiful waste of time for those who had already played the Sega CD version which was released slightly earlier than this Game Gear port.

Overall, Sword of Hajya is a wonderful game that any fan of strategy/RPGs should have a lot of fun with. Though it may be a bit on the simple side, for gamers who just want another fun fantasy quest in the Shining universe, it’s a great addition to the Game Gear library.

A nice RPG offering for the portable system! Although it is scaled down from the 16-bit big brother version, this one keeps almost all the same elements. There are several hours of gameplay in this one, with the music and graphics taking first chair. This is the type of game made for the portable system when you take a long trip.

Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya is the middle of the three Shining Force titles for the Sega Game Gear, but the only one to get localized for North America. Now, for less than four dollars, you can experience one of the best SRPG series of all time on your Nintendo 3DS. There is less to do and there are fewer characters than in the console versions, but this one the first ever handheld SRPG in English and only the second ever made, so it’s understandable that there was less content. Still for only $3.99, this is arguably the best deal on the Nintendo 3DS today. Anyone with the system should download it today and experience firsthand why this classic has stood the test of time for the past nineteen years and single-handedly sold a LOT of Game Gears.
